The Santos de Cartier is made in stainless steel, two-tone steel and yellow gold, solid yellow or rose gold, and, since late 2025, titanium, with black ADLC-coated steel versions also seen on the market. A two-tone Santos pairs a steel case and bracelet with 18k yellow gold on the bezel and bracelet links, and it is the easiest way to get a gold look at a lower step than solid gold. This guide compares each material by weight on the wrist, durability, bracelet features and who it suits. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorised Cartier retailer, and every watch below is sourced to order.

Which materials does the Santos de Cartier come in?
The modern Santos de Cartier is offered in steel, two-tone, gold and, most recently, titanium. The table compares the main options at the large model, which is roughly 39.8 mm wide in the references we reviewed.
| Material | What it is | Look | Bracelet system | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Full steel case and bracelet | Cool, classic, understated | QuickSwitch and SmartLink | A daily watch and the safest resale reference |
| Two-tone | Steel case with 18k yellow gold bezel and gold bracelet links | Warm accents, dressier | QuickSwitch and SmartLink on the steel and gold bracelet | Wearers who want gold without a full gold case |
| Yellow or rose gold | Solid 18k gold case, usually on a strap or gold bracelet | Formal, rich | QuickSwitch on most references | Dress wear and gifting |
| Titanium | Grade 23 titanium case and bracelet, mostly bead-blasted | Matte grey, modern | QuickSwitch only; no SmartLink | Light weight and a low-key look |
| Steel with black ADLC | Steel with a hard black carbon coating | Stealthy, high contrast | QuickSwitch; varies by reference | A bold, all-black statement |
Case dimensions, water resistance and bracelet features differ by reference, so treat the table as a map, not a spec sheet.
What is a two-tone Santos de Cartier?
A two-tone Santos is a steel watch with yellow gold used on the bezel and the central bracelet links. The large model reference W2SA0006, introduced with the relaunched Santos de Cartier collection in 2018, has a 39.8 mm case with an 18k yellow gold bezel held by the signature exposed screws. Because the case itself is steel, it wears and ages like the steel model while looking noticeably warmer. Many buyers choose it with the silver opaline dial and Roman numerals. You can compare current options in our Santos de Cartier collection or look at the two-tone Santos W2SA0006 directly.
Is the steel Santos the best all-round choice?
For most buyers, yes. Steel is the most durable and the most versatile of the materials: it handles daily wear, it matches almost any outfit and it has the broadest choice of dials and sizes. Steel Santos models carry both QuickSwitch, which lets you change between bracelet and strap without tools, and SmartLink, which adjusts bracelet length without a watchmaker. Browse the steel Cartier Santos range if you want the baseline before comparing the others.
Is a solid gold Santos worth it?
Only if you want a dressier watch and accept more care. Solid 18k gold is softer than steel, so it picks up marks more easily, and it is heavier on the wrist. In exchange you get the richest finish and a watch that works at formal events. Cartier makes the Santos in yellow gold and rose gold; the rose tone is subtler and tends to flatter silver and grey dials. Both are offered on a gold bracelet or a leather strap, and the strap keeps the weight down.
What is different about the titanium Santos?
The titanium Santos de Cartier is lighter than steel and almost entirely bead-blasted, with polished bevels and screw heads. According to SJX, the reference WSSA0089 is a 39.8 mm watch about 9.4 mm thick, uses Cartier's automatic calibre 1847 MC and is rated to 100 m, and it became available from November 2025. SJX also notes that its bracelet does not have SmartLink, because Cartier says the system is not compatible with titanium, so sizing is done by removing screws. QuickSwitch is retained. See the Santos de Cartier large titanium WSSA0089 for the specific model.
What does ADLC mean on a Santos?
ADLC stands for amorphous diamond-like carbon, a hard black coating applied to steel. On a Santos it gives a black case, bezel or both, and it resists scratches better than a plain polished surface, but a deep gouge can still show the metal beneath. ADLC models tend to be skeleton or special editions, such as the large black ADLC skeleton WHSA0009. Some secondary sources disagree on which ADLC references are current and which are discontinued, so confirm the reference before you commit.
Which Santos material should you buy?
Choose by how you will wear it. Pick steel for daily use and the simplest resale story, two-tone for a warm look without a gold case, solid gold for formal wear, titanium for light weight, and ADLC for a dark, graphic style. If you split time between dressy and casual settings, two-tone is the usual compromise. If you are still deciding between families, the Cartier Santos collection shows the range side by side.
Quick answers
What is a two-tone Santos de Cartier?
It is a Santos with a steel case and bracelet combined with 18k yellow gold, mainly on the bezel and the central bracelet links. It looks like a gold watch from a distance but wears like the steel model.
Does the titanium Santos have SmartLink?
No. According to SJX, the titanium bracelet keeps QuickSwitch but omits SmartLink, which Cartier says is not compatible with titanium, so link removal is done with screws.
Is the Santos de Cartier in steel or gold the better value?
Steel is the more practical buy for daily wear and is the easier model to resell. Gold costs meaningfully more and demands more care, so it suits buyers who want a formal watch rather than an everyday one.
Is ADLC more scratch resistant than steel?
Generally yes against fine daily marks, but it is a coating, so a deep scratch or impact can expose the steel underneath.
Does Bizak & Co. have these Santos watches in stock?
No. Bizak & Co. sources every watch on demand, so we find a specific unit that matches your material, size and dial and confirm photographs and the final price before you commit.
