Richard Mille RM 30: two generations and how the rotor declutches

Within the wider Richard Mille collection, the RM 30 name covers two generations. The RM 030, from the early 2010s, is the earlier model: a skeletonised automatic in a tonneau case about 42 mm wide, with the declutchable rotor, an on/off indicator for it and an oversize date. It is now sourced on the secondary market. The RM 30-01 is the later generation, with calibre RMAR2, and Richard Mille still presents it in its current collection.

Richard Mille's own RM 30-01 page explains the idea. A conventional automatic lets a slipping flange in the barrel absorb extra winding, and over time that friction can leave debris inside. The RM 30-01 instead declutches its rotor at 55 hours of power reserve and re-engages it at 40 hours, with an ON/OFF clutch indicator in the upper-left of the dial. It also has a power reserve of around 55 hours with a power-reserve indicator, an oversize date at 4 o'clock, a function selector worked by a pusher at 2 o'clock and a case water resistant to 50 metres, held by 20 spline screws in grade 5 titanium.

• Function selector and date: on the RM 30-01 the pusher should cycle through winding, date setting and hand setting, and the date should change cleanly.
• Spline screws: the case screws should be identical and free of tool marks.
• Case material: look for chips at ceramic edges; carbon and Quartz TPT should show an irregular layered grain.
• Service history: ask for the last service record on an older RM 030.
