The Richard Mille RM 30-01 Automatic Winding with Declutchable Rotor, introduced in 2023, is built around the skeletonised calibre RMAR2. Its patented rotor stops winding when the power reserve reaches 55 hours and starts again at 40, and a push-button at 2 o'clock chooses between winding, date setting and hand setting. This listing is the titanium version, 42 mm, with a skeletonised dial on a rubber strap; Richard Mille gives its weight as 96 grams with the strap. Bizak & Co. lists it from $206,460.

What sets the RM 30-01 apart

  • Declutchable rotor. When the reserve reaches 55 hours, a dedicated gear system disconnects the variable-geometry rotor from the barrel; when it falls to 40 hours, the rotor reconnects. A clutch indicator at the upper left reads ON while the rotor winds and OFF while it is disengaged. Richard Mille designed it to replace the slipping flange of a conventional automatic, which brakes against the inside of the barrel and can leave debris there over time.
  • The rotor. A grade 5 titanium central flange, a heavy-metal weight segment and 18K white gold wings with five positions, adjusted by grade 5 titanium screws, on ceramic ball bearings; it winds in one direction only, anti-clockwise.
  • Function selector. A push-button at 2 o'clock works like a gearbox: each press moves between winding, date setting and hand setting, and a hand at 3 o'clock shows which is selected.
  • Oversize date. Semi-instantaneous, in a horizontal aperture at 4 o'clock.
  • Calibre RMAR2. A skeletonised automatic with baseplate and bridges in grade 5 titanium (hand-ground, wet sandblasted and Titalyt-treated), a double barrel for steadier torque, a free-sprung balance with variable inertia, 38 jewels and 28,800 vph (4 Hz), and around 55 hours of power reserve (±10%). It measures 31.25 x 29.45 mm and 5.41 mm thick.
  • Titanium case. Satin-finished, microblasted and polished, built in three parts with 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and two Nitrile O-ring seals, and water-resistant to 50 m. There is no casing ring: the movement is mounted on rubber chassis mounts fixed by grade 5 titanium screws.
  • RM 30-01 or RM 030? The RM 030 of 2011, now among Richard Mille's historical models, used the calibre RMAR1: it declutched at 50 hours and showed the rotor's state at 12 o'clock. The RM 30-01's RMAR2 declutches at 55 hours, shows it at the upper left and has the push-button function selector at 2 o'clock. Bizak & Co. lists the titanium RM 030 from $148,799, and our RM 030 guide compares the two.

Buying an RM 30-01

  • Choose the case first. Titanium, red gold, white ATZ ceramic and the Le Mans Classic share the calibre RMAR2, so the choice is mostly about the case: in our catalogue they run from $206,460 to $325,499.
  • Test the functions. Each press of the selector at 2 o'clock should move the hand at 3 o'clock through winding, date setting and hand setting, and the clutch indicator at the upper left should read OFF once the reserve passes 55 hours.
  • Check a Le Mans Classic against Richard Mille's description. The green Quartz TPT caseband, the 24-hour display with a green 16, the checkered flag around the date and the event logo on the caseback should all be there.

Richard Mille spent four years developing a rotor that declutches itself and introduced it in the RM 030 of 2011. The RM 30-01, introduced in 2023, carries the idea into the calibre RMAR2: once the power reserve reaches 55 hours, a dedicated gear system disconnects the rotor from the barrel, and at 40 hours it reconnects. A conventional automatic instead lets a flange slip inside the barrel once the mainspring is full, which over time can leave debris there. On the RM 30-01 an indicator at the upper left of the dial reads ON or OFF to show what the rotor is doing.

The skeletonised movement has a baseplate and bridges in grade 5 titanium, an alloy of 90% titanium, 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium, with a double barrel, a free-sprung balance with variable inertia and a rotor whose 18K white gold wings can be set in five positions. A push-button at 2 o'clock selects winding, date setting or hand setting, with a hand at 3 o'clock confirming the choice, and the semi-instantaneous oversize date sits in a horizontal window at 4 o'clock.

The titanium tonneau case is satin-finished, microblasted and polished, built in three parts with 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and water-resistant to 50 m. It has no casing ring: the movement is mounted on rubber chassis mounts fixed by titanium screws. Richard Mille gives the weight as 96 grams with the strap, and this version comes on a rubber strap.
