|Filip Biczak
Cartier Santos de Cartier large automatic in steel, reference WSSA0018

Buy the Santos de Cartier for a sporty daily watch with an automatic movement, a bracelet and a quick-change strap system, and buy a Tank for a slim dress watch. The Santos is a square watch. Cartier rates its automatic sizes to 100 meters. The Tank Must is a thin rectangle that slides under a cuff. Most Tank Must watches run on quartz and cost less. What is the difference between a Santos and a Tank?

The Santos de Cartier is a square sports watch on a bracelet, and most Tanks are slim rectangular dress watches on a strap. The steel Santos de Cartier has a square case, a seven-sided crown and a steel bracelet. The Tank Must large is 33.7 by 25.5 mm and 6.6 mm thick. The medium Santos is 41.9 by 35.1 mm and about 8.8 mm thick. The Tank Must large slips under a cuff.

Santos vs Tank: how do the specs compare?

The automatic Santos is bigger and more water resistant. The Tank Must is smaller and slimmer, and its small and large sizes run on quartz. The table lists current references from Cartier's US site. Sizes are length by width by thickness, in millimeters.

Read the table by movement first. The medium and large Santos run on the caliber 1847 MC, an automatic that Cartier builds itself. Its power reserve is 40 to 42 hours, says Bob's Watches, so it stops if you leave it for two days. The Santos de Cartier medium (WSSA0029) and the large (WSSA0018) are the two automatic sizes. Reference numbers can change, so match the number to the exact watch before you buy.

Which Tank do you mean: Must, Française or Louis Cartier?

The Must is the steel entry Tank, the Française is the Tank with an integrated bracelet, and the Louis Cartier is the gold dress Tank.

The Tank Must comes in small, large and extra-large. The Tank Must small SolarBeat runs on a quartz movement that charges from light. The large runs on quartz or SolarBeat. The extra-large is automatic. The Must starts in the low four figures. Cartier also makes a large SolarBeat on a steel bracelet (WSTA0122).

The steel Tank Française has a steel bracelet. Cartier's small (WSTA0129) is quartz, and the large (WSTA0067) is automatic. Bob's Watches calls it the sporty Tank.

The Tank Louis Cartier is the dress Tank. Cartier lists it in yellow, rose and white gold and in platinum. The medium (WGTA0011) uses the hand-wound caliber 1917 MC. The Tank Louis Cartier large automatic in yellow gold (WGTA0357) runs on the caliber 1899 MC. Our Cartier Tank models compared guide covers the rest of the family.

Which one is better to wear every day?

The automatic Santos de Cartier is the better daily watch, because it handles water, sits on a bracelet and swaps straps fast. Cartier rates it to 100 meters, which Bob's Watches says covers swimming but not diving. Cartier rates every Tank in the table to 30 meters, so keep it out of the pool.

Cartier lists a steel bracelet and a calfskin strap for the medium and large Santos. Both fit the QuickSwitch system for fast strap swaps, and the steel bracelet has SmartLink for resizing. Most Tank Must watches sit on a leather strap.

Bob's Watches says the square shape makes the Santos look bigger than its width. The medium looks like a round 36 to 37 mm watch, and the large looks closer to 41 mm. It advises trying a size smaller than usual. Only the large has a date window. For smaller wrists, see our Santos de Cartier for women guide.

The Tank Must wears slim. The Tank Must large is 6.6 mm thick, so it slips under a shirt cuff. The extra-large is 8.4 mm thick, and Bob's Watches says it wears more like a casual watch.

How much does a Santos or a Tank cost?

A Tank Must costs less than a Santos de Cartier. The Must starts in the low four figures, and the steel Santos de Cartier starts in the high four figures. On Cartier's US site, the small (WSTA0137) and large (WSTA0136) Must on a calfskin strap sit in the low four figures. The SolarBeat Must on a bracelet, the extra-large automatic (WSTA0141) and the small Française sit in the mid four figures. So does the slim quartz Santos-Dumont large in steel.

In the table, the small quartz Santos, the medium and large automatics and the large Française sit in the high four figures. The Santos de Cartier large in titanium (WSSA0089) and the two gold Louis Cartier models in the table sit in the low five figures. Our Cartier price guide has more bands.

Pre-owned costs less for both. Bob's Watches says its completed sales of a steel medium Santos had a median about 17 percent under Cartier's current list price, as of September 2026. It says most new Cartier watches trade below retail, and a pre-owned Tank can cost 15 to 25 percent less than boutique price. It also says Tanks generally hold 65 to 75 percent of retail over five years. These are one dealer's figures, so treat them as a guide.

How old are the Santos and the Tank?

The Santos is older, and Cartier dates it to 1904, against 1917 for the Tank. Cartier says Louis Cartier made the Santos for the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Cartier says Louis Cartier designed the Tank in 1917, after the tanks of World War I. Bob's Watches adds that Cartier sold the Santos from 1911 and showed the Tank to the public in 1919. It dates today's Santos de Cartier to 2018.
