The Grandmaster Chime 6300: what it does
Patek launched the Grandmaster Chime in 2014, its 175th anniversary year. The hand-wound calibre GS AL 36-750 QIS FUS IRM, 1,366 parts, strikes on three gongs in five modes:
- grande and petite sonnerie, which strike the hours and quarters as they pass;
- a minute repeater, which strikes the time on demand;
- an alarm that strikes the time it is set for, and a date repeater that sounds the date, both patented and, Patek says, world exclusives.
The other complications include an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a four-digit year, moon phases and a second time zone. The case turns on a patented mechanism so either dial can face up. Like every current Patek repeater, it is protected against dust and humidity only, not water-resistant.

How a Patek Philippe minute repeater works
A minute repeater strikes the time only when you ask. On most Patek repeaters you push the slide at 9 o'clock all the way up and let go; the 6301P uses a pusher in the crown. Steel hammers then strike gongs, steel wires coiled around the movement:
- one low note for each hour;
- a high-low pair for each quarter hour;
- one high note for each minute since the last quarter.
At 12:59 that makes 32 strikes, the longest sequence; the three-gong 6301P plays each quarter as three notes, 35 strikes in all. Patek's “cathedral” gongs, introduced in 2000, are twice as long as classic ones and give a deeper, longer-lasting sound; the 5178, 5374 and 6002 use them. Thierry Stern, Patek's president, listens to every minute repeater before delivery.
Patek sold its first repeater on record in 1839, the year it was founded. The modern revival began with the 33-complication Calibre 89 in 1989, and in 2021 the 15-piece Advanced Research 5750P “Fortissimo” earned four patents for a louder chime.
Sonnerie, repeater or chiming alarm?
A sonnerie strikes by itself. In grande sonnerie mode the 6301P strikes each new hour and, at every quarter, the hour followed by the quarters; petite sonnerie strikes the hours only on the hour and just the quarters in between; silence stops both, while the repeater still works on demand. A slide at 6 o'clock selects the mode, and the strikework runs 24 hours in grande sonnerie mode. Every Patek sonnerie also has a minute repeater and a silence mode, and the 6301P's 703-part calibre derives from the Grandmaster Chime's.
Patek also counts alarms as chiming watches. The Calatrava Chiming Alarm 5322G strikes a hammer on a gong and, rated to 30 m, is its only water-resistant chiming watch. The discontinued Alarm Travel Time 5520 uses the same AL 30-660 alarm calibre family; Bizak asks start at $147,598 for the platinum 5520P-001.

Before you buy a chiming Patek
- Hear it before you pay in full. Ask for a recording of the watch striking a stated time; 12:59 plays the full sequence. Patek notes that a repeater left unwound for a long time may strike wrongly at first and should be right after two or three tries.
- Keep it dry. Patek says the slide's opening leaves its repeaters unprotected against water, so keep liquids away from them.
- Leave the crown alone while it strikes and for 30 seconds after; Patek's warranty does not cover damage from doing so.
- Budget for service. Patek recommends one every 8 to 10 years, and only its Geneva manufacture services minute repeaters. Ask for the last service record.
- Match the full reference. A 6300GR-001 and a 6300/403G-001 are over $2 million apart at retail; the papers should carry the same reference as the watch.
Quick answers
How much is the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime?
Patek's US retail is $3,582,168 for the 6300GR-001 and up to $5,631,628 for the gem-set 6300/403G-001. On October 19, 2026 Bizak asks ran from $3,719,999 for the 6300G-010 to $14,862,900 for the 6300/401G-001.
What is the most expensive Patek Philippe ever sold?
The only stainless steel Grandmaster Chime, the 6300A-010, sold for CHF 31,000,000 at Christie's Only Watch auction in Geneva on November 9, 2019, against an estimate of CHF 2.5 to 3 million.
How much is a Patek Philippe minute repeater?
Patek's current repeaters start at $572,087 US retail for the 38 mm Calatrava 7047G-001. Earlier references can cost less: on October 19, 2026 Bizak asked from $348,749 for a 5078G-001.
How does a Patek Philippe minute repeater work?
Push the slide and hammers strike two gongs: a low note for each hour, a high-low pair for each quarter and a high note for each minute past the quarter, up to 32 strikes at 12:59.
What is the difference between a minute repeater and a grande sonnerie?
A minute repeater strikes only on demand; a grande sonnerie strikes the hours and quarters by itself as they pass. Patek's 6301P and Grandmaster Chime combine both, with a petite sonnerie and a silence mode.
Is a Patek Philippe minute repeater water-resistant?
No. Patek rates its repeaters as protected against dust and humidity only, because the slide needs an opening in the case. Its only water-resistant chiming watch is the Calatrava Chiming Alarm 5322G, rated to 30 m.
