Rolex Serial Number Guide: How to Read the Year, Scrambled Serials and Random Codes

A Rolex serial number is the unique code engraved on each watch, and it dates the watch only when it comes from the sequential or letter-prefixed era, which ran until about 2010. On modern watches it sits on the rehaut, the inner ring under the crystal, and from about 2010 it is a random alphanumeric code that cannot be converted into a year. This guide shows where to find the serial, how the three serial eras work, how to estimate a production year, and why a serial on its own never proves a watch is genuine. Bizak & Co. is a Miami Beach sourcing desk and not an authorised Rolex retailer, and nothing here is an appraisal.

Last updated on November 2, 2026. Year ranges come from collector charts compiled by observation, not from a Rolex publication, so treat them as estimates. Rolex's own guidance on papers and service is on its watch care and service page.

Where is the serial number on a Rolex?

On a modern Rolex the serial number is engraved on the rehaut at the 6 o'clock position, and on older watches it is engraved on the case flank between the lugs at 6 o'clock. The reference number sits opposite, between the lugs at 12 o'clock. To read a case-flank serial you normally have to remove the bracelet, which is a job for a watchmaker, not a home tool.

  • Rehaut: look through the crystal at the inner ring. Rolex began engraving it around 2005, and by roughly 2010 it had replaced the case-flank serial entirely.
  • Case flank: the original location. A few watches from the changeover years carry both.
  • Paperwork: the warranty card or guarantee card repeats the serial and shows the date of sale, which is the most useful year clue on a modern watch.

What are the three types of Rolex serial number?

Rolex has used three serial systems: plain sequential numbers until about 1987, letter-prefixed sequential codes from about 1987 to 2010, and since about 2010 a random eight-character alphanumeric code, which collectors also call a scrambled serial. Only the first two can be tied to a year with any confidence.

Era (approximate) Serial format Where engraved Does it reveal the year?
Before about 1987 Plain numbers, five to seven digits Case flank, 6 o'clock Yes, within a year or two, using a collector chart
About 1987 to 2010 One letter followed by six digits, with the letter standing for a production block (R from 1987, ending with V in about 2008 to 2009 and G in about 2010) Case flank; rehaut as well from about 2005, and rehaut only from about 2008 Yes, the letter maps to a span of roughly a year
About 2010 onward Eight-character random alphanumeric code (also called scrambled) Rehaut No; the code carries no public date

How do you find the year from a Rolex serial number?

You match the serial against a production chart for its era, and you accept a margin of error of about a year. For a plain numeric serial, find the range that contains your number. For a letter-prefixed serial, find the letter and read off the year it represents. Collectors built these charts by recording serials on dated watches, so two charts can differ by a year at a boundary, and Rolex does not publish an official table. A serial can also lag the year the watch was sold, because a movement or case may sit in stock before it is cased up and sold.

Type your serial into this lookup, or read the charts below it. We compared charts from 14 sites, including Bob's Watches, SwissWatchExpo and Bernard Watch Co., and we show a range of years where they disagree.

These are collector charts, not Rolex records, so they can differ by a year. If you have the warranty card, check the sale date on it. Rolex made the watch that year or earlier.

What is a scrambled Rolex serial number?

A scrambled serial is not a separate format. It is another name for the random eight-character alphanumeric serial that Rolex adopted around 2010 (some charts say 2011). It follows no public sequence, so it cannot be converted into a production year. Watches made from about 2008 to 2010 still carry letter-prefixed serials, usually M, V or G, and those can be dated from a chart like any other letter serial. Rolex has not published its reasons for the change. To date a watch with a scrambled serial, use the warranty card, service records, the reference's introduction window and the movement caliber.

What is a random Rolex serial number?

A random serial is an eight-character alphanumeric code, used on watches from about 2010 onward, that follows no public sequence. Because it is not tied to a date you can read, an online lookup cannot tell you the year from the serial alone. The practical routes to a year are the warranty card, a service record, the reference number (each reference has a known introduction window), and the movement caliber. For example, a watch carrying the 126610LN reference cannot predate that reference's introduction, whatever the card says. Our guide to Rolex nicknames and their references shows how references map to configurations.

How do you use a Rolex serial number lookup?

A serial number lookup is a chart check, not a database check. Rolex does not operate a public lookup where you type a serial and receive a verified history. Websites that offer one, and the tool on this page, compare your serial against collector-compiled ranges for the sequential eras, and for random serials they can only confirm that the format looks plausible. Use a lookup to place an older watch in a decade, then verify everything else by other means.

Does a matching serial prove a Rolex is real?

No. A valid-looking serial is easy to copy, and counterfeiters routinely engrave a real serial or one that fits the claimed era. A serial supports authenticity only alongside other checks: the reference and serial should agree with the papers, the engraving should be crisp and correctly positioned, the movement should carry the right caliber for the reference, and the whole watch should be inspected by a qualified watchmaker. Duplicate serials are the real warning sign, since each genuine serial belongs to one watch. If a seller refuses to show the rehaut or the case flank, treat that as a reason to walk away. Our authenticity guarantee explains what we check on a sourced watch.

Which Rolex models should you check first?

The checks are the same on every model, but the sports references attract the most imitation, so apply them with extra care. The Rolex Submariner, Rolex Daytona and Rolex GMT-Master II are the usual targets. Dressier lines such as the Rolex Datejust and the Rolex Day-Date President are copied too, and you can browse the full Rolex collection to see which references we can seek. Quick answers

Where is the serial number on a Rolex?

On the rehaut at 6 o'clock for modern watches, and between the lugs at 6 o'clock on the case flank for older ones. Some watches from the changeover years have both.

Can you find a Rolex's year from its serial number?

For plain and letter-prefixed serials, yes, to within about a year. For random serials from about 2010, no; use the warranty card, service records and the reference's introduction window instead.

What is a scrambled Rolex serial?

It is another name for the random eight-character serial Rolex has used since about 2010. It follows no public sequence, so it cannot be dated from the code. Watches from about 2008 to 2010 carry letter-prefixed serials instead, usually M, V or G.

Does Rolex offer an official serial number lookup?

No public one. Online lookups use collector charts, so they are estimates, and an authorised service center is the route for confirming a specific watch.

Does a matching serial prove a Rolex is genuine?

No. It is one data point among several. Authenticity rests on the watch as a whole: papers, movement, case, dial and engraving, inspected by a professional.
