What is the Tudor Black Bay 58?
The Black Bay 58 takes its name from 1958, the year Tudor introduced the ref. 7924, its first divers' watch waterproof to 200 metres, nicknamed the "Big Crown". Tudor launched the Black Bay 58 at Baselworld 2018 as a smaller, slimmer alternative to the 41 mm Black Bay, with a 39 mm case in the proportions of 1950s divers' watches, gilt details and the angular "Snowflake" hands that Tudor first used in its 1969 catalogue. It is waterproof to 200 m, carries a unidirectional diving bezel and is covered by Tudor's five-year guarantee, which needs no registration and transfers to a new owner. Tudor suggests a service roughly every ten years, depending on use.
Since 2018 the family has grown to two steel generations, three precious or unusual metals and a travel-time version, all at 39 mm.

The burgundy Black Bay 58 (M7939A1A0RU): what changed
The all-burgundy Black Bay 58 of 2025 is the first time-only Black Bay 58 with Master Chronometer certification. Each finished watch is tested in Switzerland by the Federal Institute of Metrology, METAS, which Tudor says means running within 0 to +5 seconds a day, resisting magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss and meeting its stated water resistance and power reserve. Inside is the calibre MT5400-U with a silicon hairspring and a 65-hour reserve. Tudor took the colour from a burgundy prototype of its Submariner ref. 79190 from the 1990s that never went into production, and gave the dial a soft radial brushing.
The other changes are practical. The case is 11.7 mm thick, 0.2 mm slimmer than the M79030N; the crown sits flush with the case so its tube no longer shows; and every bracelet and strap closes with Tudor's T-fit clasp, which adjusts the length by up to 8 mm across five positions without tools. Buyers choose a five-link bracelet, offered on the Black Bay 58 for the first time, a three-link "rivet" bracelet or a rubber strap. Tudor's 2025 press kit gave Swiss prices of CHF 3,950 to CHF 4,250 depending on the bracelet; in the US the burgundy launched at $4,275 on rubber, $4,500 on the three-link and $4,700 on the five-link.
In 2026 Tudor applied the same specification to the original colours. The black M7939A1A0NU has the 11.7 mm case, the flush crown, the MT5400-U and T-fit, with gilt markings on a matt black dial, and launched in the US at $4,975 on rubber, $5,225 on the three-link and $5,350 on the five-link.
Prefer burgundy on the bezel only? The 41 mm Black Bay 79230R pairs a black dial with a burgundy-red aluminium bezel and the calibre MT5602 (Bizak ask from $3,399), the Black Bay GMT 79830RB splits its 24-hour bezel between burgundy and blue (from $3,699), and the Black Bay 58 GMT in the table above pairs black with burgundy in the 39 mm case.
Which Black Bay 58 should you buy?
- The classic: M79030N. Black and gilt is the look that made the model, and it is still the lowest ask in our catalogue. You give up the Master Chronometer movement and the T-fit clasp of the newer steel models.
- The current steel watch: M7939A1A0NU or M7939A1A0RU. Pay a little more for METAS certification, the flush crown, the slimmer case and T-fit. Burgundy is the more distinctive colour; the 2026 black is the modern version of the classic.
- For travel: the Black Bay 58 GMT. A second time zone in the 39 mm case, with a 24-hour bezel in black and burgundy and the same Master Chronometer standard.
- Something different: 925, Bronze or 18K. The 925 was the first Tudor divers' watch in silver and, like the 18K, shows its movement through an open case back. The bronze case develops a patina as it is worn and is sold through Tudor boutiques. The 18K on its solid gold bracelet is the most expensive Black Bay 58 by far; Tudor's 2024 press kit gave a Swiss price of CHF 30,000.
Black Bay 58 against the Black Bay 54 and the 41 mm Black Bay
Size is the real choice. The Black Bay 54 is 37 mm and reads as a true vintage-sized diver (Bizak ask from $4,364 on rubber); the Black Bay 58 at 39 mm suits most wrists and is thinner than the 41 mm Black Bay, which suits larger wrists. Buying a Black Bay 58: what to check
- Guarantee card date. Tudor's five-year guarantee transfers with the watch, so a pre-owned example with a recent card still carries cover.
- Bracelet and clasp. T-fit belongs to the GMT, the 18K gold bracelet and the Master Chronometer models; the earlier steel references have their own bracelets. Make sure the bracelet or strap matches the reference suffix you are paying for.
- Bezel insert. The aluminium insert on most versions marks more easily than ceramic. Check the edge and the zero triangle.
- Movement and papers. MT5402 or MT5400 for the earlier models, MT5400-U or MT5450-U for the Master Chronometers. The card should match the serial.
- 18K and bronze. Gold should be satin, as Tudor finished it, not polished bright; bronze should show even patina, not stripped metal.
