Royal Oak Blue Dial References: 15202, 15500, 15510 and 26240

The blue-dial Royal Oak is the Royal Oak most buyers picture: the "Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50" shade Audemars Piguet has used since the 2012 Jumbo, applied to a Petite or Grande Tapisserie dial in a steel case. Four references carry it most often on the secondary market: the 39 mm Jumbo Extra-Thin 15202ST (2012 to 2021) and its successor the 16202ST, the 41 mm Selfwinding 15500ST (2019 to 2022) and its successor the 15510ST, and the 41 mm Chronograph 26240ST (2022 to date), with the 15400ST, 26331ST and the 37 mm 15450ST and 15550ST as the other blue steel options. What is the "Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50" dial?

Audemars Piguet names its blue after the dial of the 1972 Royal Oak 5402, whose colour was specified as night blue with a cloud effect and identified in the supplier's code as "Nuage 50". The 2012 15202ST revived it on a Petite Tapisserie dial, and the same name has been used on the 15500ST, 15510ST, 16202ST and 26240ST since. On the Petite Tapisserie of the Jumbo the small squares read as a deep, almost uniform blue; on the Grande Tapisserie of the 41 mm models the larger squares catch more light and the dial reads a shade brighter and more saturated. Earlier blue Royal Oaks, including the 15400ST and 26320ST of 2012 to 2019, use a similar but not identical blue. If the exact shade matters, compare the references side by side in daylight before choosing.

Royal Oak 15202ST and 16202ST: the blue Jumbo

The 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01 is the blue Royal Oak with the highest collector standing: the 39 mm Extra-Thin case, the calibre 2121 that traces to the original 1972 movement, no seconds hand, the AP monogram at 12 and "Audemars Piguet" at 6. It ran from 2012 to 2021 and was replaced in 2022 by the 16202ST, which keeps the case and dial and swaps in the calibre 7121, a new ultra-thin movement with a longer reserve and a stop-seconds function the 2121 lacked. Secondary prices for the 15202ST rose sharply after discontinuation and have held above the 16202ST for most of the period since; the 16202ST is the one to ask for if the movement matters more than the collector premium. Royal Oak 15500ST and 15510ST: the blue 41 mm

The 15500ST.OO.1220ST.01 of 2019 put the blue Grande Tapisserie dial with the new calibre 4302 into the 41 mm case, with a date at 3 and applied markers, and the 15510ST.OO.1320ST.01 of 2022 continued it with the 50th-anniversary rotor in its first year and a revised clasp. Both are about 10.4 mm thick and share the same bracelet. The blue is the most requested of the 15510ST's dials and trades above the black, grey, silver and green versions. A later 15510ST blue variant carries the .06 suffix in dealer listings; ask for the full reference and a photograph in daylight when comparing. The 15400ST.OO.1220ST.03 of 2012 to 2019 is the value route to a blue 41 mm, with the older calibre 3120 in a slightly slimmer case.

Royal Oak Chronograph 26240ST: the blue chronograph

The 26240ST of 2022 is the blue Royal Oak Chronograph with the integrated flyback calibre 4401: three subdials at 3, 6 and 9 on a blue Grande Tapisserie dial, a 41 mm case about 12.4 mm thick and a 70-hour reserve. It replaced the 26331ST of 2017, which used the modular calibre 2385 in a slimmer case with blue subdials on a blue dial, itself preceded by the 26320ST. The 26240ST is the one to buy new; the 26331ST is the one to buy if you want the slimmer case and a lower price, and it has a following of its own for its two-tone subdial rings. Blue Royal Oaks in gold and two-tone

The same blue appears on the rose gold 15510OR and 26240OR, the white gold 15510BC and 26240BC, the rose gold Jumbo 15202OR and 16202OR, the frosted rose gold 26239OR chronograph and the diamond-set 16202BC. Gold blue-dial Royal Oaks trade closer to their retail prices than steel because fewer buyers want the weight and the price, and rose gold on a blue strap sits well below rose gold on a bracelet. • Retail. Audemars Piguet publishes prices by market on its own site; the blue dial costs the same as other colours of the same reference at retail, and the premium is entirely a secondary-market phenomenon.

Is a blue-dial Royal Oak a good investment?

The blue dial is the safest colour to own because it is the one most buyers want, so it is the easiest to sell and the one that has carried the largest premium in each reference. The 15202ST has done best because it is discontinued and tied to the original design; the 15500ST and 26331ST have held up as discontinued references with current-generation calibres. None of that guarantees future gains, and the spread between dealer buy and sell prices remains real. Buy the blue because it is the Royal Oak colour; if resale matters, ask for a written cash-buy assessment before you commit.

Buying a blue Royal Oak: what to check

• Full reference. The suffix after the case code identifies the dial; 1240ST.01 on a 15202 or 16202, 1220ST.01 on a 15500, 1320ST.01 on a 15510 and 26240 are the blue dials.
• Dial condition. The Tapisserie pattern should be crisp with no marks between the squares; the applied markers should sit flat and the lume should match on hands and markers.
• Case edges. Crisp bevels between brushed and polished surfaces; rounded edges mean polishing.
• Bezel screws. Eight hexagonal screws aligned as the factory sets them.
• Bracelet. Count the links and check for stretch; a shortened bracelet is expensive to extend.
• Warranty and service. Current references carry the manufacture warranty; for a 15202ST, 15400ST or 26331ST ask for the last service receipt.
• Price against the band. A full-set blue Royal Oak offered well under the market is the single most reliable warning sign.
