The Kelly grew out of Hermès's saddlery-inspired Sac à dépêches. Each Kelly is made by hand in Hermès's own workshops, so supply is limited, and size, leather, colour and hardware all move what a given bag asks.

Kelly Retourne vs Kelly Sellier

Most Kelly sizes come in two constructions. A Sellier Kelly is stitched on the outside, saddle-style, for sharp edges and a rigid, formal shape; it suits firm leathers such as Epsom. A Retourne Kelly is sewn inside out and turned, so its seams sit inside, its edges are rounded and it softens with use; supple Togo is common. We confirm the construction in the photos we send.

Kelly leathers and hardware

Togo: grained calfskin with a visible pebble and a matte finish; it resists light scratches and relaxes a little with age.
Epsom: embossed-grain calfskin, light and stiff, so it holds the Kelly's lines and wipes clean easily.
Swift: smooth, fine-grained calfskin with a soft hand and rich colour, used here on the Kelly Pochette and the black Kelly Danse II; it scratches more readily than grained leathers.
Evercolor: soft, finely grained calfskin with a matte finish, more forgiving than Swift; used here on the Beton and Rouge H Kelly Danse II.

Kelly hardware is usually plated in gold (GHW) or palladium (PHW), the cooler silver tone; two listings here say silver hardware. Full-size Kelly bags usually come with a clochette, padlock and keys.
