The Patek Philippe 5396G-017, introduced in 2024, is the white gold version of Patek's Annual Calendar Moon Phases Reference 5396. Its 38.5 mm case holds a blue sunburst dial with a black-gradient rim and 12 baguette-diamond hour markers; the day and month sit in twin windows at 12 o'clock, and the date, moon phases and a 24-hour indication at 6 o'clock. The annual calendar needs one correction a year, on March 1. Patek Philippe lists it at $71,768 US retail, and Bizak & Co. lists it from $61,790.

What sets the 5396G-017 apart

  • The dial. Sunburst blue with a black-gradient rim, 12 white gold applied hour markers set with baguette diamonds (0.26 ct) and faceted white gold dauphine hands. Other 5396 dials use gold "obus" markers on opaline or sunburst grounds, or the applied Breguet numerals Patek added in 2016.
  • Calibre 26-330 S QA LU 24H. Self-winding, with 339 parts, 34 jewels, a 21K gold central rotor, a Gyromax balance with Spiromax balance spring at 4 Hz, 35 to 45 hours of power reserve and the Patek Philippe Seal. That is more parts than the roughly 280 of a conventional perpetual calendar with moon phases, because Patek built its annual calendar mostly from wheels and pinions rather than levers. Earlier 5396s used the calibre 324 S QA LU 24H.
  • Moon phase. Patek states that this moon-phase display strays from the true lunar cycle by only one day every 122 years.
  • Case and strap. Fully polished 38.5 mm white gold, 11.2 mm thick, water-resistant to 30 m, with a sapphire crystal case back, on a hand-stitched, shiny navy blue alligator strap with a white gold fold-over clasp.
  • 5396 or 5205? Both are Patek annual calendars with moon phases, and current versions share the calibre 26-330 S QA LU 24H. The 5396 is the classic 38.5 mm layout with day and month at 12 o'clock; the 5205G-013 pairs a similar blue sunburst dial with baton markers in a 40 mm case, with day, date and month in three windows along an arc.
  • Lineage. Patek invented and patented the annual calendar in 1996, first in the Ref. 5035; the 5396 followed in 2006. In April 2026 Patek added the rose gold 5396R-016 with a sand beige dial, and the silvery opaline 5396R-011 is now discontinued.

Buying a 5396G-017

  • Match the papers to the watch. Patek's Certificate of Origin lists the movement and case numbers and is valid only when dated, signed by an authorized Patek Philippe retailer and completed with the owner's name. The 5396G-017 arrived in 2024, so a genuine certificate for one carries a date from 2024 on.
  • Ask for the correction stylus. The day, date, month and moon phase are set with push pieces at 10, 4, 2 and 8 o'clock, which Patek says to press only with the stylus supplied with the watch.
  • Know the correction rules. Advance the date on March 1, by three days or by two in a leap year. Patek advises no calendar corrections between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. and no moon-phase corrections between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.; if the watch has stopped, wind it by hand (about ten turns of the crown) and set it to 6 a.m. first.
  • Plan for service. Patek recommends a service every eight to ten years and advises keeping a leather strap away from water.

Patek Philippe invented and patented the annual calendar in 1996. It tracks months of 30 and 31 days on its own, so the date needs advancing only once a year, on March 1. Reference 5396 has carried it since 2006 in Patek's most classical layout: day and month in twin windows at 12 o'clock, and the date, moon phases and a 24-hour indication at 6 o'clock. The white gold 5396G-017 joined the line in 2024.

Its dial is sunburst blue, darkening to a black-gradient rim, with 12 baguette-cut diamonds (0.26 ct) set in white gold as hour markers and faceted white gold dauphine hands. The fully polished case measures 38.5 mm across and 11.2 mm thick, is water-resistant to 30 m and closes with a sapphire crystal case back; the strap is hand-stitched, shiny navy blue alligator with a white gold fold-over clasp.

Inside is the self-winding calibre 26-330 S QA LU 24H, with 339 parts, 34 jewels, a 21K gold central rotor and a Gyromax balance with a Spiromax balance spring at 4 Hz. It holds 35 to 45 hours of power reserve and carries the Patek Philippe Seal. If the watch stops, about ten turns of the crown restart it; Patek's instructions then have you set the hands to 6 a.m. before correcting the calendar, and advise against calendar corrections between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m.
