The Patek Philippe 5970P-001 is the platinum version of the reference 5970 perpetual calendar chronograph, and the only standard version with a black dial. It has a 40 mm case and the hand-wound calibre CH 27-70 Q, and shows the day and month in two windows at 12 o'clock and the date with the moon phase at 6. Phillips dates the platinum 5970 to 2009 and 2010 and estimates that 300 to 500 were made. Bizak & Co. lists it from $269,699.

What sets the 5970P apart

• The only black 5970. Phillips calls the 5970P the only standard-production 5970 with a black dial; a few rose gold 5970R are also known with one.
• Two platinum-only dial details. The tachymeter scale gains a "120" graduation at 6 o'clock, and the "SWISS" marking sits below 6 o'clock (Phillips; both are visible in the reference image).
• The classic perpetual chronograph dial. Day and month windows at 12 o'clock, the date with the moon phase at 6, small seconds at 9 and the 30-minute counter at 3: in 2011 Patek Philippe called this the classic layout of its perpetual calendar chronographs for seven decades. On the 5970 the two side subdials sit level with the centre, the one at 9 adding a 24-hour indicator and the one at 3 the leap-year indicator.
• Bigger than the 3970. The 40 mm case is four millimetres larger than the 36 mm 3970 it replaced, and its chronograph pushers are square where the 3970's were round (Phillips).
• A Lemania-based calibre. Phillips describes the hand-wound CH 27-70 Q as a heavily modified Lemania-based movement similar to the 3970's. According to Patek Philippe, the 5270 that replaced the 5970 in 2011 was the first to combine its perpetual calendar with a chronograph calibre made entirely in-house.

The 5970 in four metals

Patek Philippe made the 5970 from 2004 to 2010, with the last watches sold in 2011, in rose, white and yellow gold and in platinum. Patek does not publish production figures; the estimates below are the ones Phillips gives.

5970P or 5270P?

The 5270 replaced the 5970 in 2011. Both are hand-wound perpetual calendar chronographs with the day and month at 12 o'clock and the date and moon phase at 6; they differ in the case, the movement and the dial:

• Case: 40 mm for the 5970P, 41 mm for the 5270.
• Movement: the Lemania-based CH 27-70 Q in the 5970; Patek Philippe's own CH 29-535 PS Q in the 5270.
• Dial: the 5970 keeps its side subdials level with the centre and shows the 24-hour and leap-year indications by hand inside them; the 5270 sets the small seconds and the 30-minute counter below the centre line and moves day/night and the leap year into two small round windows.
• Price: Bizak & Co. lists the platinum 5270P from $173,999 pre-owned (5270P-001, salmon dial) and $180,250 brand new (5270P-014, green dial).

Checks before you pay the balance

• Year and papers. The platinum 5970 was made in 2009 and 2010, so ask for the sale date and the case and movement numbers on its papers, and have the quote name the box and papers that come with the watch.
• The dial. Ask for a sharp daylight photo: the black dial, the "120" on the tachymeter and "SWISS" below 6 o'clock mark the platinum version. A retailer signature changes the price; Phillips records a Tiffany-stamped 5970P sold for US$441,000.
• Calendar and chronograph. Ask for a short video of the chronograph starting, stopping and resetting, with the day, date, month, leap year, moon phase and 24-hour indication all set to agree with today's date.
• Case. Ask for side photos of the case and lugs to judge how much the platinum has been polished.
• Service. Ask when the watch was last serviced and for a recent timing reading.
