The Richard Mille RM 47 is the RM 47 Tourbillon, the brand's tribute to Japanese culture: a manual-winding tourbillon, calibre RM47, with hours, minutes and around 72 hours of power reserve, made extremely compact so that a samurai armour in 3N yellow gold, carved and painted by hand, can stand over the movement. It was a limited edition of 75 pieces, and Richard Mille now lists it among its historical models. This listing, RM47SAM, is that watch: a tonneau case with a 3N yellow gold caseband and a bezel and caseback in black TZP ceramic, on a black rubber strap. Bizak & Co. lists it from $1,441,499.

What sets the RM 47 apart

  • Armour carved and painted by hand. The engraver Pierre-Alain Lozeron carved the samurai armour and his wife, Valérie, painted it. Its 11 components in 3N yellow gold took 16 hours of engraving and 9 hours of painting, more than a full day of handwork, and Richard Mille presents the armour as an evocation of bushido, the samurai code of ethics.
  • The lord of the 47 ronin. Many details refer to the Asano clan. Asano Naganori, who headed the clan's domain in the 18th century, was the lord whose death the 47 ronin avenged, and the clan's kamon, its heraldic crest, appears on the tourbillon at 6 o'clock.
  • A calibre built around the armour. The manual-winding calibre RM47 shows hours and minutes and runs for around 72 hours (±10%). Its baseplate and skeletonised bridges are grade 5 titanium with a black PVD treatment, which Richard Mille uses for corrosion resistance, rigidity and flat surfaces.
  • Yellow gold and black ceramic. The three-part tonneau case sets a 3N yellow gold caseband between a bezel and a caseback in black TZP ceramic. Richard Mille's description of the RM 47 mentions no gem-setting.
  • A maple-leaf crown. The crown combines titanium, Carbon TPT and polished 3N yellow gold and carries a Japanese maple leaf, which Richard Mille links to the seasons and to grace, beauty and the brevity of life.
  • 75 pieces, four years in design. Richard Mille says the RM 47 took nearly four years of design work. It was limited to 75 pieces, and the brand now lists it among its historical models.

Richard Mille presents the RM 47 Tourbillon as a meeting of art and spirituality: an aesthetic tribute to Japanese culture that took nearly four years to design. Everything starts from the armour. The manual-winding calibre RM47 was made extremely compact so that a stylised samurai armour, crafted entirely by hand, could stand guard over the movement as an evocation of bushido, the samurai code of ethics.

The engraver Pierre-Alain Lozeron carved the armour and his wife, Valérie, painted it: 11 components in 3N yellow gold, which took 16 hours of engraving and 9 hours of painting. Many details refer to the Asano clan. Asano Naganori, who headed the clan's domain in the 18th century, was the lord whose death the 47 ronin avenged, and the clan's kamon, its heraldic crest, appears on the tourbillon at 6 o'clock. Even the crown, in titanium, Carbon TPT and polished 3N yellow gold, carries a Japanese maple leaf, which Richard Mille links to the seasons and to grace, beauty and the brevity of life.

Beneath the armour, the calibre RM47 shows hours and minutes and holds around 72 hours of power reserve (±10%). Its baseplate and skeletonised bridges are grade 5 titanium with a black PVD treatment, chosen for corrosion resistance, rigidity and flat surfaces. The three-part tonneau case sets a caseband in 3N yellow gold between a bezel and a caseback in black TZP ceramic. The RM 47 was a limited edition of 75 pieces and is now one of Richard Mille's historical models.
