The Richard Mille RM 35-02 is the RM 35-02 Automatic Rafael Nadal of 2016: the third watch in Richard Mille's RM 035 collection for Rafael Nadal and the first of them to wind itself. Its skeletonised calibre RMAL1 shows hours, minutes and seconds and carries Richard Mille's variable-geometry rotor, behind a sapphire case back, in a tonneau case of 49.94 x 44.50 x 13.15 mm. Richard Mille made it in Carbon TPT or Quartz TPT Red and now lists it among its historical models. This listing, reference RM35-02, is the Carbon TPT version on a rubber strap. Bizak & Co. lists it from $357,930.

What sets the RM 35-02 apart

• The Nadal watch that winds itself. Inspired by the RM 35-01, the RM 35-02 answered the many Richard Mille clients who asked for a self-winding mechanism in a Nadal watch. The RM 035 of 2011 and the RM 35-01 of 2014 before it are both wound by hand.
• A rotor tuned to the wearer. Richard Mille fitted its patented variable-geometry rotor, which it calls an emblem of its automatic movements, so that the winding can be adjusted to the wearer's activities.
• Calibre RMAL1 in grade 5 titanium. The baseplate and bridges are wet-sandblasted grade 5 titanium, treated with PVD and Titalyt and stretched for rigidity and flat surfaces. A variable-inertia balance beats at 28,800 vph, and a double barrel keeps the torque steady; launch reports gave about 55 hours of power reserve.
• A sapphire case back, a first for the Nadal line. With an anti-reflective treatment, it lets the calibre be seen from every angle.
• Carbon TPT or Quartz TPT Red. Carbon TPT, the case of this listing, stacks thin layers of carbon filaments with the fibre direction turned 45 degrees from layer to layer, so every case shows its own striated pattern. Quartz TPT Red, the other version, pairs undyed white quartz fibre with a red matrix developed with North Thin Ply Technology; Richard Mille says it withstands accelerations of up to 5,000 g.
• Part of a partnership that began in 2008. Richard Mille and Rafael Nadal first met in 2008. The models they have designed together start with the RM 027 of 2010 and its carbon nanotube case, and the RM 035 collection continues today with the RM 35-03.
