This white gold Rolex Daytona with a blue dial is the Cosmograph Daytona 116509 with the dial Rolex calls bright blue, model number M116509-0071: a 40 mm Oyster case, fixed bezel and Oyster bracelet in 18 kt white gold, a blue sunburst dial with red-ringed blue counters and a red “Daytona”, and calibre 4130, Rolex’s self-winding chronograph movement. Rolex added this dial to the 116509 in 2016; its successor since 2023, the 126509, now comes in bright blue too. Bizak & Co. lists this 116509 from $47,300.

What sets the blue 116509 apart

• The bright blue dial. A blue sunburst with blue counters ringed in red, a red “Daytona” above the 6 o’clock counter and luminescent baton hour markers and hands. Rolex added it to the white gold 116509 at Baselworld 2016, alongside the green-dial yellow gold 116508, and Rolex Certified Pre-Owned listings name it bright blue, model number M116509-0071.
• A polished white gold bezel. The fixed bezel is 18 kt white gold, engraved with the tachymetric scale that reads average speeds up to 400 units per hour. When the steel Daytona moved to a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel in 2016, the 116509 kept its metal bezel. The bezel does not screw down; the winding crown and the two chronograph pushers do, a Daytona feature since 1965.
• Calibre 4130. Rolex introduced this self-winding chronograph movement in 2000, the first Daytona calibre it designed and developed entirely itself. It was the first movement with Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring, its chronograph uses a reduced number of components, and it runs for about 72 hours. The dial carries the “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” line.
• White gold from case to clasp. The 40 mm Oyster case, the bezel and the Oyster bracelet are 18 kt white gold, closing on an Oysterlock folding safety clasp with an Easylink comfort extension link. The case is water resistant to 100 metres (330 feet).
• Replaced in 2023. Rolex redesigned the Daytona’s case and dial in 2023 and fitted calibre 4131, with the Chronergy escapement, Paraflex shock absorbers and a cut-out oscillating weight. The white gold Daytona on a bracelet became the 126509, which Rolex also makes with a bright blue dial (M126509-0005, US retail $59,100).

Checks before you pay the balance

• 116509 or 126509. Both come in white gold with a bright blue dial, and the 126509 costs more. Check that the quote and the warranty card name the reference 116509 and the dial.
• The dial in daylight. Ask for daylight photos: they show the sunburst and the red rings on the counters better than studio images.
• Papers. Ask for a photo of the warranty card and have the box and papers that come with the watch named in the quote.
• Case and bracelet. 18 kt gold is softer than steel, so ask for close-ups of the case edges and lugs, the number of bracelet links included and photos of the Oysterlock clasp closed and open.
• The chronograph. Ask for a short video of the pushers being unscrewed and the chronograph starting, stopping and resetting to zero, a recent timing reading and the date of any Rolex service.
