Rolex Day-Date 36 36 mm 118238-DMOPDFP Yellow Gold Black Mother of Pearl Rolex Day-Date 36 36 mm 118238-DMOPDFP Yellow…

The Rolex Day-Date is widely regarded as the most prestigious wristwatch in the world, and the 36mm reference 118238-DMOPDFP represents one of its most visually arresting expressions. Introduced in 1956, the Day-Date was the first wristwatch to display the day of the week spelled out in full alongside the date, and it has been produced exclusively in precious metals ever since. Worn by world leaders, heads of state, and cultural icons, the Day-Date earned its informal title—the Presidents' Watch—and it has never relinquished that position at the apex of the Rolex catalogue.

Reference 118238-DMOPDFP is built entirely in 18k yellow gold, from its 36mm Oyster case to the fluted bezel and the three-link President bracelet that was created exclusively for the Day-Date. The fluted bezel, one of Rolex's most recognizable design signatures, is machined directly from solid yellow gold, amplifying the luminosity of the case and drawing the eye immediately to the dial. At 36mm, the case diameter is the original and historically correct size for the Day-Date, offering a profile that is simultaneously classic and highly wearable across a wide range of wrist sizes.

The dial of this reference is where the watch truly distinguishes itself. Black mother-of-pearl is a naturally occurring gem material harvested from the inner shell of certain mollusks; each dial is therefore unique, with its own depth, iridescence, and subtle pattern of color that shifts under different light conditions. Against the rich warmth of yellow gold, the dark, lustrous surface creates a dramatic contrast that is both refined and unmistakably luxurious. Diamond hour markers replace the standard applied gold indices, adding a further layer of brilliance and elevating the dial from beautiful to extraordinary.

Powering the watch is a Rolex-certified automatic movement, the technology behind which has been refined over decades to meet the brand's exacting standards of precision and reliability. Rolex calibers used in the Day-Date family are chronometer-certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) and then further regulated by Rolex to its own Superlative Chronometer standard. The result is a movement whose accuracy, self-winding efficiency, and long-term durability are benchmarks in Swiss horology. The Oyster case provides a secure environment for the movement, rated to 100 meters (330 feet) of water resistance.

From an investment and collectibility perspective, the Day-Date in 18k yellow gold with a mother-of-pearl dial represents some of the most sustained demand in the pre-owned Rolex market. Rare dial variants—particularly those featuring natural gem materials and diamond accents—command consistent premiums and tend to appreciate over time as supply tightens. Reference 118238-DMOPDFP combines three of the most sought-after attributes: precious metal construction, a one-of-a-kind natural dial, and factory diamond indices.
