The Rolex 228238 with a green dial is the yellow gold Day-Date 40, Rolex model M228238-0061: a 40 mm Oyster case in 18 kt yellow gold with a fluted gold bezel, a green lacquer dial with Roman numerals, the self-winding calibre 3255 and the President bracelet that gave the Day-Date its nickname, the Presidential. Rolex’s US retail price is $50,400; Bizak & Co. lists it from $65,475.

Why the Day-Date is called the Presidential

Rolex launched the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in 1956, when it was the only watch to show the day of the week spelt out in full as well as the date, and designed the President bracelet for it. Rolex dates the “presidents’ watch” reputation to 1963, when Lyndon B. Johnson wore a Day-Date into the White House. The bracelet’s name and that history are why buyers call the Day-Date the President or the Presidential. Rolex still makes it only in precious metals, in 36 mm and 40 mm, and offers the day disc in 26 languages.

What sets the green 228238 apart

  • Green lacquer dial, Roman numerals. Rolex lays six thin coats of lacquer on a brass base, adds a colourless varnish and polishes the surface before the markers are applied. Roman numerals mark 4 (as IIII), 6, 8 and 10 o’clock and gold batons the other hours, with the day spelt out in full at 12 and the date under the Cyclops lens at 3.
  • Solid 18 kt yellow gold, fluted bezel. Case, bezel and bracelet are 18 kt yellow gold cast in Rolex’s own foundry. The fluting began as a way to screw the bezel tightly onto the Oyster case in 1926; today it is a Rolex signature made only in 18 kt gold or 950 platinum.
  • President bracelet and Crownclasp. Semi-circular three-piece links, with ceramic inserts since 2015 that Rolex says add resistance and comfort, close on a concealed folding Crownclasp that blends into the links and opens with a small crown-shaped lever.
  • Calibre 3255. Rolex introduced the Day-Date 40 with this self-winding movement in 2015. It has the Chronergy escapement, a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers and about 70 hours of power reserve, and is certified Superlative Chronometer to −2/+2 seconds a day after casing. The day and date change instantly at midnight and have secure rapid-setting.
  • Oyster case, 100 metres. A monobloc middle case, a screw-down case back and a Twinlock screw-down crown make it waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet).

Green, green ombré or olive: the green Presidentials compared

The green Day-Date 40s in Rolex’s catalogue include the two yellow gold 228238s, green and green ombré, and olive green versions in Everose gold, white gold and platinum. The 36 mm Day-Date also comes in green ombré.

Rolex US retail prices are from rolex.com and Bizak & Co. prices are our listings, both read on October 19, 2026. The green and green ombré 228238 differ only in the dial: the ombré darkens from green at the centre to black at the edge, a style Rolex introduced in the 1980s and relaunched in 2019. Two green Presidentials sit below Rolex retail in our catalogue: the white gold 228239 at $50,490 and the Day-Date 36 with a diamond-set green ombré dial at $41,849. Prefer 36 mm? The Day-Date 36 has the same calibre 3255; see the Day-Date 36 collection.

Checks before you pay the balance

  • The dial. The green and green ombré 228238 cost the same, so have the quote name the dial (Rolex model M228238-0061 is the green, M228238-0069 the ombré) and ask for daylight photos, which show the ombré’s dark edge better than studio images.
  • Warranty card and papers. Ask for a photo of the warranty card, check that the reference on it reads 228238, and have the box and papers named in the quote.
  • The bracelet. The President bracelet is sized by removing links, so ask how many links come with the watch and for photos of the Crownclasp closed and open.
  • Day, date and timekeeping. Ask for a short video of the day and date changing over at midnight and for a recent timing reading; calibre 3255 is certified to −2/+2 seconds a day after casing.

Rolex launched the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in 1956 as the only watch of its time to show the day of the week spelt out in full as well as the date, and created the President bracelet for it. Rolex dates the watch’s reputation as the “presidents’ watch” to 1963, when Lyndon B. Johnson wore a Day-Date into the White House. The case grew to 41 mm with the Day-Date II and calibre 3156 in 2008, and in 2015 Rolex introduced the Day-Date 40 with calibre 3255, the movement in this watch.

The 228238 is the Day-Date 40 in 18 kt yellow gold. Rolex model M228238-0061 gives it a green lacquer dial with Roman numerals at 4, 6, 8 and 10 o’clock, and M228238-0069 a green ombré dial that darkens to black at the edge; both are in Rolex’s current catalogue at a US retail price of $50,400 (rolex.com, October 19, 2026). Rolex also makes the Day-Date 40 with an olive green dial: the Everose gold 228235, the white gold 228239 and the platinum 228236.

Case, fluted bezel and bracelet are 18 kt yellow gold cast in Rolex’s own foundry. The Oyster case, with its Twinlock screw-down crown, is waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet); the President bracelet’s semi-circular three-piece links have had ceramic inserts since 2015 and close on a concealed folding Crownclasp. Bizak & Co. is an independent dealer, not an authorized Rolex dealer, and all trademarks belong to Rolex SA.

FAQ

1. Why is the Rolex Day-Date called the Presidential?
Because of its bracelet and its history. Rolex designed the President bracelet, with its semi-circular three-piece links, for the launch of the Day-Date in 1956, and Rolex says the watch began to earn its reputation as the “presidents’ watch” when Lyndon B. Johnson wore a Day-Date into the White House in 1963. That is why buyers call the Day-Date the President or the Presidential.

2. What is the Rolex 228238 with a green dial?
It is the Day-Date 40 in 18 kt yellow gold with a green lacquer dial and Roman numerals, Rolex model number M228238-0061: a 40 mm Oyster case with a fluted gold bezel, the self-winding calibre 3255 with about 70 hours of power reserve, the day spelt out in full at 12 o’clock and the date at 3, water resistance to 100 metres (330 feet) and the President bracelet with a concealed Crownclasp.

3. How much is the green Rolex Day-Date 40?
It is in Rolex’s current catalogue at a US retail price of $50,400, the same as the green ombré version (rolex.com, October 19, 2026). Bizak & Co. lists both from $65,475 (October 19, 2026); the final price of a specific watch is confirmed in its quote.

4. What is the difference between the green and the green ombré 228238?
Only the dial. The green M228238-0061 is an even green lacquer; the green ombré M228238-0069 darkens from green at the centre to black at the edge, a style Rolex introduced in the 1980s and relaunched in 2019. Both have Roman numerals at 4, 6, 8 and 10 o’clock, the same case, bracelet and calibre 3255, and the same $50,400 US retail price. Bizak & Co. lists both from $65,475.

5. Is the Presidential Day-Date solid gold?
Yes. The case, the fluted bezel and the President bracelet of the 228238 are all 18 kt yellow gold, which Rolex casts in its own foundry. Rolex makes the Day-Date only in precious metals: 18 kt yellow, white and Everose gold, 950 platinum and, from 2026, its 18 kt Jubilee gold.

6. What movement is in the Rolex Day-Date 40 228238?
Calibre 3255, a self-winding movement developed and manufactured by Rolex. It arrived with the Day-Date 40 in 2015 and now also equips the Day-Date 36. It has the Chronergy escapement, a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers, about 70 hours of power reserve and Superlative Chronometer certification to −2/+2 seconds a day after casing. The day and date change instantly at midnight and have secure rapid-setting.

7. Day-Date 40 or Day-Date 36: which size should I choose?
Both sizes have calibre 3255 and the President bracelet, so it comes down to wrist size and taste. The 228238 has the 40 mm case and the larger dial. The 36 mm yellow gold Day-Date, the 128238, also comes with a green ombré dial set with diamonds (M128238-0069, $49,100 at Rolex), which Bizak & Co. lists from $41,849 (October 19, 2026).

8. Can you wear the Day-Date 40 every day?
It is built as an Oyster: a monobloc middle case, a screw-down case back and a Twinlock screw-down winding crown make it waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet), under a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Since 2015 the President bracelet has had ceramic inserts, which Rolex says add resistance and comfort.

9. What does 228238GRP mean?
228238 is Rolex’s reference for the Day-Date 40 in 18 kt yellow gold, which it makes with many dials. GRP is a catalogue code, not a Rolex code: it marks our green Roman-numeral listing, and 228238GO is its green ombré counterpart. Rolex’s own model number for this dial is M228238-0061.

10. Is Bizak & Co. an authorized Rolex dealer?
No. Bizak & Co. is an independent dealer and is not an authorized Rolex dealer.
