The John Mayer Daytona is the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in solid 18ct yellow gold with a green sunburst dial. Rolex has never used the name. It attached itself to reference 116508 because John Mayer, one of the few genuinely knowledgeable collectors with a public platform, spoke about his at length, and within a few years the nickname had displaced the reference number in how dealers, auction houses and buyers talk about the watch.

The sunburst finish swings from near-black in shadow to bright emerald under direct light, so most of the time the watch reads as a gold Daytona and only occasionally announces the colour. The champagne registers stop the dial tipping into novelty. That restraint under a very loud material is the whole reason it became a collector's watch rather than a statement piece, and it is why photographs consistently undersell it.

Market reality. This is one of the strongest performers in the modern Rolex catalogue and has traded well above retail since launch. Two things sustain it. The nickname gives the watch recognition far outside collecting, which widens the buyer pool in a way a reference number never does. And gold Daytonas are produced in genuinely small numbers next to steel sports models, so even current production stays scarce at retail. Neither factor looks likely to reverse, but treat past performance as history rather than a forecast.

What to check before buying. Establish the reference first, from the papers and the crystal edge, not from the seller's description. Yellow gold is soft, so inspect the lugs and bracelet flanks closely for over-polishing that has rounded the factory edges. Check the bracelet for stretch, which shows sooner in gold than in steel. Look at the sub-dial rings under magnification for the crisp printing of an untouched dial. Confirm the serial between the lugs matches the card, and expect a meaningful premium for a full set at this price level.
