The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 50th anniversary is the brand's 2022 celebration of the Royal Oak's 1972 debut. Rather than release one commemorative watch, AP refreshed much of the collection that year, and examples sold in 2022 carry a special oscillating weight engraved with "50 Years" that shows through the caseback. The best-known pieces are the 39 mm "Jumbo" Extra-Thin 16202, the 41 mm selfwinding 15510, the 37 mm 15550 and the 41 mm chronograph 26240. This guide explains which references belong to the anniversary, whether they are truly limited, and what to check before buying one. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorised Audemars Piguet retailer, and we do not hold these watches in stock.

What is the Royal Oak 50th anniversary?
It is the year-long jubilee AP ran in 2022 to mark five decades since Gérald Genta's Royal Oak first appeared in 1972. The brand updated several lines at once instead of creating a single special edition, so "50th anniversary" describes a group of references and a caseback detail, not one model. Some dealers also label individual dial variants "50th Anniversary" in their listings, which is why the term can feel loose when you shop.
Which references belong to the 50th anniversary?
Four families are most often cited: the Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202, the 41 mm selfwinding 15510, the 37 mm 15550 and the chronograph 26240. Press coverage also mentions openworked and flying tourbillon models. The table lists what reputable coverage reports; confirm the details of any specific watch against its reference number and papers.
| Reference family | Case size | Metals reported | Movement reported | What changed in 2022 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Oak Extra-Thin "Jumbo" 16202 | 39 mm | Steel, pink gold, yellow gold, platinum | Caliber 7121 | Succeeds the 15202 with the same exterior dimensions and a new movement |
| Royal Oak selfwinding 15510 | 41 mm | Steel | Caliber 4302 (dealer-reported) | New dial colors, including a blue shade AP says matches the 1972 original |
| Royal Oak selfwinding 15550 | 37 mm | Steel, pink gold, two-tone | Caliber 5900 | Wider bevels, refined bracelet, thinner movement |
| Royal Oak Chronograph 26240 | 41 mm | Steel, pink gold | Caliber 4401 | New dial colors, improved caseback, thinner bracelet links |
The 38 mm Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph is a separate reference, the 26715, with Caliber 2385.

Is the Royal Oak 50th anniversary a limited edition?
Not in the numbered sense, as far as the coverage we reviewed shows. The reports describe a dated production window, 2022, with a special rotor, and none of them call the main references limited editions. Boutique-exclusive dial variants have been reported, so a particular dial can be scarcer than the reference it belongs to. Because the picture is not uniform, ask AP or the seller to confirm whether a specific watch was a boutique exclusive, and never assume rarity from the "50th anniversary" label alone. For genuinely limited Royal Oaks, see our explainer on Audemars Piguet collaborations and limited editions.
What is the "50 Years" oscillating weight?
It is the special rotor, cut out with a "50 Years" logo and visible through the sapphire caseback, that marks an anniversary-year watch. Reports say it was fitted to Royal Oak models sold in 2022, with the exception of the perpetual calendars, and that later watches use a standard rotor. That makes the caseback the quickest physical check: a 2022 example should show the engraved weight, while a watch with a plain rotor was most likely made or sold afterward. Treat it as a strong clue, not proof, and combine it with the reference number and paperwork dates.
Which 50th anniversary dials do collectors look for?
Collectors tend to chase the dials that echo the 1972 original or break from the usual palette. The steel 16202 has a blue-grey dial with the tapisserie pattern, described as a tribute to the first Royal Oak. The precious-metal 16202 versions use smoked dials: platinum with smoked green, yellow gold with smoked gold and pink gold with smoked grey. On the 41 mm 15510, AP lists a "Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50" Grande Tapisserie dial whose shade it says matches the original model from 1972, and dealers also report white and khaki green versions. Khaki green has been cited on the chronograph as well.
What should collectors check before buying one?
- The caseback. Look for the "50 Years" oscillating weight in clear photographs of the actual watch.
- The full reference. Match the reference, including the dial code at the end, to the dial you see and to the papers.
- Paperwork dates. Papers and warranty dates should fit a 2022 sale if the watch is presented as an anniversary piece.
- Condition and polish history. Ask about service work, since thin Royal Oak cases and sharp bevels show over-polishing.
- Edition status. Ask whether the dial was a boutique exclusive, and get the answer in writing.

Where can you find a Royal Oak 50th anniversary watch?
Because the run is tied to one year, supply is finite and each unit differs. We source on demand, so browse the Royal Oak Anniversary collection for references we can track down, the wider Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches for other models, or the full Audemars Piguet range. Tell us the reference and dial you want, and we confirm a specific unit, its caseback and its paperwork before you commit.
Quick answers
When was the Royal Oak 50th anniversary?
The anniversary was 2022, fifty years after the Royal Oak launched in 1972. AP released updated references and a special oscillating weight during that year.
Which Royal Oak is the 50th anniversary model?
There is no single model. The 16202 Jumbo Extra-Thin, 15510, 15550 and 26240 chronograph are the commonly cited references, and the "50 Years" rotor is what ties them to the anniversary.
Is the Royal Oak 16202 a limited edition?
The 16202 is reported as a regular production reference that replaced the 15202, not a numbered limited edition. Individual dials may have been boutique exclusives, so verify the specific watch.
How can I tell a 50th anniversary Royal Oak from a later one?
Check the caseback for the "50 Years" oscillating weight. Watches sold after 2022 are reported to have a standard rotor, so a plain rotor points to a later watch.
