Gold and complicated Nautilus references run from about US$200,000 to well over US$700,000. Why is the steel Nautilus 5711 so expensive?

Three reasons. Patek made the 5711/1A from 2006 to 2021 in small numbers, a few thousand a year at most, and allocated them to established clients, so demand always exceeded supply at retail. Demand rose sharply from about 2017 as the integrated-bracelet steel sports watch became the category every collector wanted, and the 5711 was its reference point. And in January 2021 Patek announced it would stop making the 5711/1A, replaced it for one year with the olive green 5711/1A-014 and then a Tiffany-dial edition of 170 pieces, and did not offer a steel successor; the 5811 that followed in October 2022 is white gold. A watch that listed in the low-to-mid US$30,000s at discontinuation therefore trades at several times that figure, and the green and Tiffany dials trade far higher again. The premium peaked in early 2022, fell through 2023 and 2024 and has been broadly stable since.

5711 vs 5811: what changed?

5711/1A-010 5811/1G-001
Case Steel, 40 mm, about 8.3 mm thick White gold, 41 mm, about 8.2 mm thick
Movement Calibre 324 S C, 45 h reserve Calibre 26-330 S C, 45 h reserve, stop seconds
Dial Blue with horizontal embossing, gradient Blue with horizontal embossing, darker gradient to black
Bracelet Steel, folding clasp White gold, folding clasp with two-stage adjustment
Years 2006 to 2021 2022 to date
Bizak catalogue ask, 21 Sep 2026 US$152,440 US$212,175

The 5811 is the better watch on paper: a stop-seconds movement, a better clasp and a case that is slightly larger and no thicker. It is also white gold, which makes it heavier and roughly doubles the list price. Collectors who want the steel Nautilus want the 5711, and no 5811 will change that; buyers who want a current Nautilus with a warranty and a chance of a retail allocation should look at the 5811.

Which Nautilus references are the best value?

  1. 7118/1A steel 35.2 mm. Listed at US$80,131 for the grey dial and US$100,425 for the silver on 21 September 2026. It is the same design in a size that suits most wrists under 17 cm, with a self-winding calibre 324 S C, and it is the cheapest mechanical steel Nautilus in production.
  2. 5712/1A steel moonphase. Listed at US$89,100 to 105,089. The 5712 has more going on than the 5711, with a moonphase, pointer date, power reserve and small seconds on the calibre 240 PS IRM C LU, and it trades well below the 5711.
  3. 5990/1A-001 Travel Time chronograph. Listed at US$124,063. A flyback chronograph with two time zones on the calibre CH 28-520 C FUS, in steel, for less than a time-only 5711.
  4. 5980/1AR two-tone chronograph. Listed at US$132,767. The steel and rose gold chronograph is less sought after than the all-gold 5980/1R at US$236,900 and is the value chronograph in the line.
  5. 7010R and 7010G quartz 32 mm. Listed from US$46,499. A quartz Nautilus in gold with a diamond bezel is the cheapest Nautilus of any kind and a common first Patek.

How does the Nautilus wear?

The Nautilus case is measured across the bezel without the ears, so a 40 mm 5711 spans about 42 mm with them and wears larger than the figure suggests, though the slim 8.3 mm profile keeps it under a cuff. The 5811 at 41 mm adds about a millimetre. The 40.5 mm complicated models (5726, 5980, 5990) are thicker, from about 11 mm to 12.5 mm, and wear noticeably larger. The 35.2 mm 7118 is the right size for wrists under about 17 cm or for anyone who prefers the proportions of the original 1976 3700, which was 42 mm but very thin. Water resistance is 120 m on the time-only and moonphase models and lower on the complicated references; check the specification for the exact reference.

Is a Nautilus a good investment?

The 5711/1A bought at retail before 2021 has been one of the best-performing watches ever sold, and that is exactly why it cannot be repeated: the watch is discontinued and the successor is gold. Bought on the secondary market today, the 5711 has held value since 2023 but has not risen, and the green and Tiffany dials are thin markets where a single sale moves the price. The 5811, 5712, 5726 and 5990 have been stable. The 7118 and the gold time-only references trade closer to list and are the ones to buy for wearing. Buy the reference you want at a price you would be content to hold, and ask for a written cash-buy assessment before you commit if resale matters.

Buying a Nautilus: what to check

  • Certificate of Origin. Patek issues a Certificate of Origin with the reference, movement and case numbers; all three should match the watch. Patek does not reissue certificates.
  • Extract from the Archives. For an older or watch-only Nautilus, Patek's Extract from the Archives confirms the reference, movement and case numbers and date of sale against the factory record.
  • Dial and bezel. The horizontal embossing should be sharp and the blue gradient even; a 5711 dial with a "Tiffany & Co." stamp that is not one of the 170 pieces sold in December 2021 is not what it claims to be.
  • Case and bracelet. Sharp edges on the bezel ears and crisp brushing on the bracelet; rounded edges mean polishing. Check the bracelet for stretch and the clasp for firm closure.
  • Movement. A calibre 324 S C or 26-330 S C should run within the Patek Seal tolerance of minus 3 to plus 2 seconds a day; ask for a timing result.
  • Service. A Nautilus more than eight years old will usually need a service; Patek service is slow and expensive, so ask for the record.
  • Price against the band. A full-set 5711 offered well under the market is the single most reliable warning sign.

Why was the Nautilus 5711 discontinued?

Patek announced in January 2021 that it would end the 5711/1A because one reference had come to dominate the brand's image. It made the olive green 5711/1A-014 for the final year and a Tiffany-dial edition of 170 pieces, then replaced the line with the white gold 5811/1G in 2022.

Can you buy a Nautilus at retail?
