In our view, the top luxury watch brands include Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Rolex, Cartier and Omega. Below them sit strong makers such as IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Grand Seiko. Tudor and TAG Heuer mark the entry to luxury. We sort 20 brands into five tiers here. Any ranking is a judgment, so we show what ours rests on. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorized dealer of any of these brands: every watch here is found to order, not held in stock.

Years follow each brand's own story. Rolex counts from its 1905 London firm, and Walter Lange re-founded Lange in 1990. Bands are broad guides, and they move with each price rise.

How do you rank luxury watch brands?

You rank luxury watch brands by judgment, because no official ranking exists. That is why lists of the best luxury watch brands differ. Ours rests on four things. The first is price, meaning what a typical entry watch costs. The second is finishing, meaning how well the brand makes and decorates the case and movement. The third is in-house movements, meaning how much of the watch the brand builds itself. The fourth is resale, meaning how well its watches hold their value on listing sites such as Chrono24. A brand can score high on one and low on another. We do not claim that any one brand is the best. Use the tiers as a map, not a scoreboard.

What is the holy trinity of watchmaking?

The holy trinity of watchmaking is Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. Collectors use the name, and it is not an official title. All three start in the low to mid five figures. Our guide to the holy trinity of watchmaking goes deeper.

Patek Philippe dates from 1839, and the Stern family has owned it since 1932. Its best-known sports watch is the Patek Philippe Nautilus. Audemars Piguet dates from 1875 and has been family-owned since the start. Its icon is the Royal Oak, launched in 1972, in models such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph. Vacheron Constantin dates from 1755 and has belonged to Richemont since 1996. Its sports line is the Overseas, which includes the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time.

Which luxury watch brands are ultra high end?

Richard Mille and A. Lange & Söhne are the ultra high-end names on this list. Richard Mille is the newest brand here. Its own history page says the brand arrived in 2001, with the RM 001 Tourbillon in a first run of 17 watches. Its look comes from the tonneau case. The brand publishes no list prices. On Chrono24, current models list in six figures, and older pre-owned pieces can list for less. The RM 011 Flyback Chronograph of 2007, made with racing driver Felipe Massa, is one of its best-known models, and the brand now lists it as historic. For prices, see our guide to the most expensive Richard Mille watches.

A. Lange & Söhne began in Glashütte, Germany, in 1845. Walter Lange re-founded the brand in 1990, and Richemont has owned it since 2000. Its core lines are the Lange 1 and the Saxonia, such as the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin. Entry prices run from the low to mid five figures. We place it here on finishing, a judgment call.

Which luxury watch brands are household names?

Rolex, Cartier and Omega are the household names on this list. Rolex dates from 1905, and its home is Geneva. The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation owns it, and the company calls itself an independent Swiss manufacture. The Rolex Submariner dates from 1953. The entry Oyster Perpetual lists in the high four figures. Our guide to Rolex vs AP vs Patek vs Richard Mille shows where it sits against the top tiers.

Cartier began in Paris in 1847 and is part of Richemont. The Cartier Santos began in 1904, when Cartier made a wristwatch for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The Cartier Tank is its other icon. Entry prices run from the low to mid four figures.

Omega dates from 1848 and belongs to the Swatch Group. The first hand-wound Speedmaster came in 1957, and the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional is its best-known line. A steel Seamaster Diver 300M lists in the high four figures. For a head-to-head, read Rolex vs Omega.

Which luxury watch brands are strong makers?

Ten brands make up the strong-makers tier: IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Hublot, Panerai, Blancpain, Breguet, Ulysse Nardin, Zenith, Breitling and Grand Seiko.

  • IWC dates from 1868. The American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded it in Schaffhausen, and Richemont has owned it since 2000. Pilot's Watches and the Portugieser are its core lines.
  • Jaeger-LeCoultre dates from 1833 and has belonged to Richemont since 2000. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic comes from a design that debuted in 1931 as a watch for polo players.
  • Hublot dates from 1980 and belongs to LVMH. Its signature line is the Big Bang, such as the Hublot Big Bang Unico.

  • Ulysse Nardin dates from 1846 and sits in Le Locle. Its marine chronometers served more than 50 navies, and it launched the Freak in 2001. Sowind Group now owns it after a management buyout from Kering.
  • Zenith dates from 1865, and LVMH has owned it since 1999. It unveiled the El Primero movement in 1969, and the Chronomaster line still uses it.
  • Breitling dates from 1884 and has deep roots in aviation. Partners Group is now its majority owner. The Breitling Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 is a core model.
  • Grand Seiko began in 1960 and belongs to Seiko Group. It became a separate brand in 2017, and Spring Drive is one of its three movement types. The Snowflake is a Spring Drive model with a snow-pattern dial. The Heritage line includes the Grand Seiko Heritage 44GS, a take on a 1967 design. See Seiko vs Grand Seiko for how it differs from plain Seiko.

Which luxury watch brands cost the least?

Tudor, TAG Heuer, Cartier, Grand Seiko and Omega have the lowest typical entry prices in the table. Tudor is the sister brand of Rolex. Its own history says a dealer registered the Tudor name for Hans Wilsdorf in 1926, and he set up Montres Tudor in 1946. The Tudor Black Bay 58 lists in the mid four figures, and the Tudor 1926 line starts lower. Read Tudor vs Rolex to see how the sister brands compare.

TAG Heuer dates from 1860 and belongs to LVMH. The Carrera is its signature line, such as the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. Grand Seiko, Cartier and Omega also have models in the low to mid four figures.

Who owns the big luxury watch brands?

Three groups own most of the brands here: Richemont, the Swatch Group and LVMH. Richemont owns Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Panerai and Cartier. The Swatch Group owns Omega, Blancpain and Breguet. LVMH owns Hublot, TAG Heuer and Zenith.

The rest have other owners. Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet are family-owned. The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation owns Rolex and Tudor. Richard Mille is private. Grand Seiko belongs to Seiko Group, Ulysse Nardin to Sowind Group and Breitling to Partners Group. Owners change, so check before you buy.

Which luxury watch brand should you buy?

Pick the tier that fits your budget, then pick the brand that fits your taste. Buy Rolex if you want the name everyone knows. Buy Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet if you want a family-owned maker and can spend five figures. Buy Omega or Tudor if you want a well-made watch for four figures. Buy Grand Seiko if finish matters more than the name. Buy Cartier if design comes first. Buy Richard Mille if you want a modern racing look and can spend six figures.
