What Watch Did Tony Soprano Wear? The Rolex and Patek Philippe in The Sopranos

|Filip Biczak
Rolex Day-Date 36 ref. 18238 in yellow gold with champagne dial, fluted bezel and President bracelet, the model Tony Soprano wore

Short answer: Tony Soprano wore a solid yellow gold Rolex Day-Date, the 36 mm "President", with a champagne dial and fluted bezel, in almost every episode of The Sopranos from the second episode onward. The exact reference has never been confirmed: BAMF Style, which tracks the show's wardrobe, identifies a ref. 18238, made from 1988 to 2000, while other write-ups name the earlier 18038 or the later 118238. In the pilot, shot in 1997, James Gandolfini wore what was most likely a gold TAG Heuer instead, and the Patek Philippe in Tony's story is the one he gives Carmela's cousin Brian in season 4. The current equivalent is the Day-Date 36 ref. 128238. Bizak & Co. sources Tony's Day-Date from $15,809 pre-owned (ref. 18238) and the 128238 from $40,223 new; browse the Rolex Day-Date President collection.

Tony Soprano's Rolex Day-Date: what it is

The watch first appears in "46 Long", season 1, episode 2, first aired January 17, 1999, and stays on Tony's wrist in almost every episode of a series that ran on HBO from 1999 to 2007. It is the classic Day-Date configuration: a 36 mm 18-carat yellow gold case, a fluted gold bezel and a champagne dial, with the day spelled out in full at 12 and the date at 3, on the President bracelet with its hidden clasp. Accounts of the hour markers differ: BAMF Style describes Roman numerals, Boss Hunting stick markers. Rolex launched the Day-Date in 1956 as the first wristwatch to show both the date and the day of the week in full, and the bracelet arrived with it; the "President" name came later, in Rolex's advertising of the 1960s.

It suits the character. Tony wants to be taken for a legitimate businessman, a "waste management consultant" from New Jersey, and a plain yellow gold Day-Date is the businessman's status watch: unmistakably expensive, yet with no diamonds and a case no bigger than 36 mm. BAMF Style reads it the same way, as an executive's watch that matches Tony's ambitions as a leader.

Which reference was it: 18038, 18238 or 118238?

Three references are named for Tony's watch, and none of them has been confirmed. BAMF Style names the ref. 18238; Boss Hunting and Teddy Baldassarre's 2025 write-up name the earlier 18038; Time and Tide names the 118238. All three are 36 mm yellow gold Day-Dates with a fluted bezel on the President bracelet, and on a television screen they look almost identical. The differences are inside and in the bracelet:

  • 18038 (1978 to 1988): calibre 3055 with a quickset date only, so the day is set by turning the hands through midnight; sapphire crystal.
  • 18238 (1988 to 2000): calibre 3155, the first Rolex movement to set the day and the date independently; the bracelet still has hollow center links. It is the natural fit for a show filmed from 1997.
  • 118238 (2000 to 2019): the same calibre 3155 with a new, heavier bracelet and an upgraded clasp. Because it arrived in 2000, it could only appear in the later seasons.

Reference Made Movement Bizak ask from, Oct 12, 2026
18038 (Day-Date 36) 1978 to 1988 Calibre 3055, quickset date $16,274 (pre-owned, champagne dial)
18238 (Day-Date 36) 1988 to 2000 Calibre 3155, quickset day and date $15,809 (pre-owned, champagne dial)
118238 (Day-Date 36) 2000 to 2019 Calibre 3155; new, heavier President bracelet $19,395 (pre-owned, champagne Roman dial on an Oyster bracelet); champagne Roman on the President, $28,033
128238 (Day-Date 36) 2019 to date Calibre 3255, 70-hour reserve $40,223 (new, dark grey diamond dial); champagne dial, $56,650 new
228238 (Day-Date 40) 2015 to date Calibre 3255, 70-hour reserve $38,129 (new, black dial); champagne Roman, $47,850 pre-owned

Production years, calibres and bracelet changes are from Fratello's Day-Date history; the current models are on Rolex's Day-Date pages. Every reference here is 36 mm except the 40 mm 228238, all in 18-carat yellow gold with a fluted bezel and 100 m water resistance.

For the closest match to the show, look for a champagne dial on the President bracelet. The vintage 18038 and 18238 are the least expensive way in and the most faithful to the era. If you follow BAMF Style's Roman numerals, the 118238 champagne Roman on the President bracelet is the closest later version. The 128238 is the current-production Day-Date 36, with the 70-hour calibre 3255, and the 228238 gives the same look at 40 mm for larger wrists. Our Day-Date buying guide covers every reference and metal.

Buying a vintage Day-Date like Tony's: what to check

  • Bracelet stretch. The hollow-link President bracelets of the 18038 and 18238 loosen with years of wear; heavy stretch lowers the value and is costly to put right.
  • Dial. An original champagne dial is worth more than a Rolex service replacement, and an aftermarket diamond dial is worth less again; the listing should say which you are buying.
  • Case. Repeated polishing softens the lugs and case edges, so compare the photos with an unpolished example.
  • Papers and service. Original papers and a recent service add value. We inspect every watch before dispatch under our buyer-protection terms and send real photos of the specific piece before you pay the balance.

Did Tony Soprano wear a Patek Philippe?

Not as his own watch. The Patek Philippe in Tony's story is a gift. In "Watching Too Much Television", season 4, episode 7, first aired October 27, 2002, Carmela's cousin Brian Cammarata mentions a housing deal in passing; Tony and Ralph Cifaretto turn it into a scheme to defraud the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Tony thanks Brian with a Patek Philippe. Watchfinder points out that the gift was worth several times the Baume & Mercier Tony gives Carmela. The episode never names the reference. Teddy Baldassarre's write-up suggests an Annual Calendar ref. 5037/1G, a 37 mm white gold model that Phillips has sold at auction with a diamond-set bezel; we have not been able to confirm it, so we do not treat it as settled. The pilot watch: a gold TAG Heuer

In the pilot, season 1, episode 1, first aired January 10, 1999 and shot in 1997, Tony is not wearing the Rolex. BAMF Style, crediting a fan account, identifies the gold watch as most likely a TAG Heuer S94.006 quartz on a beaded rice-grain bracelet. The Day-Date arrives one episode later and stays for almost every episode after.

The other watches in The Sopranos

  • Carmela Soprano: a two-tone Rolex Lady-Datejust, and later a Baume & Mercier from Tony.
  • Meadow Soprano: a Cartier Pasha and a Rolex Daytona "Beach" in white gold, ref. 116519.
  • Corrado "Junior" Soprano: a two-tone Rolex Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet, named as a vintage ref. 1601.
  • Christopher Moltisanti: three Cartiers, a steel Roadster chronograph, a yellow gold Tank and a yellow gold Pasha.
  • Paulie "Walnuts" Gualtieri: a gold-plated Movado Esperanza.
  • Johnny Sack: reportedly a gold Concord Centurion.
  • Furio Giunta: a Zenith El Primero Rainbow.
  • Vito Spatafore: an Oris world-timer.

These identifications come from published wardrobe coverage of the show and from fans matching screenshots, not from HBO, so treat each as likely rather than certain. For more famous wrists, see our celebrity watches guide.

What watch did James Gandolfini wear off screen?

Off camera, Gandolfini was a devoted Kobold wearer and the American brand's ambassador. JCK reported in 2013 that the friendship began in 2003, when the actor called the company about a watch, and that during filming of the final season he bought 450 Kobolds, 40 of them in gold, as farewell gifts for the cast and crew. Kobold's own history credits him with designing the oversized Soarway Diver Seal, a 1,000 m diver released in 2005, which he wore in the brand's advertising that year.
