A private Swiss foundation, the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, owns Rolex. Hans Wilsdorf founded the company. He set up the foundation in 1945. It took over his Rolex shares when he died in 1960. No single person, family or stock market investor owns Rolex. That is why you cannot buy Rolex stock. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorized Rolex dealer: every watch here is found to order, not held in stock.

Who is the owner of Rolex?

The owner of Rolex is the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, not a person. It is a private foundation under Swiss law. Its work covers help for people in need, scholarships, the arts and animal protection. A foundation is not a company, so it has no shareholders. Nobody holds a stake in it that they could sell.

Rolex itself is not a charity. It makes and sells watches for a profit. Rolex calls itself an independent Swiss watch maker based in Geneva. Browse the Rolex range to see what the company makes.

Who was Hans Wilsdorf?

Hans Wilsdorf was the founder of Rolex. He was born in 1881 in Kulmbach, in Bavaria. In 1905, at age 24, he started a watch distribution firm in London with Alfred Davis. They called it Wilsdorf and Davis. In 1908 he came up with the name Rolex.

The company moved to Geneva in 1919. It registered Montres Rolex S.A. there in 1920. In 1926 Rolex made the Oyster, which it calls the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch.

How did a foundation end up owning Rolex?

Wilsdorf left his Rolex shares to the foundation, and it became the owner when he died. He set the foundation up in 1945, a year after his wife died. He had no children. The foundation says leaving it his shares protected Rolex's future and independence. Its rules also stress giving to charity. He died in Geneva on July 6, 1960. The foundation has owned Rolex since 1960.

Is Rolex a public company?

No, Rolex is a private company. Rolex SA is a Swiss corporation. The foundation holds it, and no Rolex shares trade on any stock exchange. Rolex also publishes no sales, profit or production figures. Any numbers you see online are outside estimates.

Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimate that Rolex made about 1.15 million watches in 2025. They put its wholesale sales at about 11 billion Swiss francs. Treat those figures as estimates, not Rolex data.

Can you buy Rolex stock?

No, you cannot buy Rolex stock. The foundation holds Rolex, and the company has no stock market listing. Some rivals are different. The Swatch Group, which owns Omega, is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. So is Richemont, which owns Cartier. A share in either group is not a share in Rolex. Treat any offer of Rolex shares with care. What you can buy is the watch.

Who is the CEO of Rolex?

Jean-Frédéric Dufour is the CEO of Rolex. He runs the business day to day. The foundation owns Rolex, but the CEO and his team run the company from Geneva.

Is Tudor owned by Rolex?

Tudor is Rolex's sister brand, and the same foundation owns both. A dealer registered the Tudor name for Wilsdorf in 1926. On March 6, 1946, Wilsdorf created Montres Tudor S.A. He wanted a watch his agents could sell for less than a Rolex. In the early years Rolex backed Tudor's quality, distribution and after-sales service.

Today Tudor sells its own range, such as the Black Bay 58 and the Pelagos. You can browse the full Tudor range. For the watch-by-watch gap, read Tudor vs Rolex.

Did Rolex buy Bucherer?

Yes. On August 24, 2023, Rolex said it would buy the Swiss retailer Bucherer. Bucherer says it has been part of Rolex since 2024. It has over 100 stores and keeps its own name. It also sells other brands. Rolex did not publish the price.

The two firms go back a long way. Ernst Bucherer teamed up with Hans Wilsdorf in 1924. In 2018 Bucherer bought the US retailer Tourneau. Bucherer was also a partner in Rolex's certified pre-owned program before the deal. Rolex now owns a major retailer as well as the factory.

Who owns Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Omega and Cartier?

A family owns Patek Philippe, the founding families own Audemars Piguet, and listed groups own Omega and Cartier. This table shows who owns what.

Brand Owner Type of owner Shares you can buy
Rolex Hans Wilsdorf Foundation Private Swiss foundation None
Tudor Hans Wilsdorf Foundation Private Swiss foundation None
Patek Philippe Stern family Family, since 1932 None
Audemars Piguet Audemars and Piguet families Founding families None
Omega The Swatch Group Listed group Group shares only
Cartier Richemont Listed group Group shares only

Patek Philippe says the Stern family bought the company in 1932. Thierry Stern has been its president since 2009. Omega and Cartier sit in groups with public shareholders. Rolex and Tudor answer to a foundation. Our Rolex vs Omega guide compares the watches.

What does Rolex ownership mean for a buyer?

It lets Rolex set its own pace on supply and price. No outside investor asks for more watches or faster growth. Rolex does not publish how many watches it makes. Some sport models carry waits at retailers that can run for years, such as the Daytona, says Bob's Watches, a pre-owned dealer. Our waitlist explainer shows how that works.

The pre-owned market fills the gap. Popular steel sport models, like the Submariner 124060, can sell above list there, the same dealer says. Ownership will not lower the price you pay. The verdict: buy new from an official Rolex retailer if you can wait. Buy pre-owned if you want the watch now and accept the premium.
