Two prices explain why Rolex watches are so expensive: the list price and the market price above it. The list price covers materials, in-house making, testing and the brand. The market price adds scarcity, because more people want some models than Rolex makes. Cost and brand drive the first price. Scarcity drives the second. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorized Rolex dealer: every watch here is found to order, not held on a shelf.

What makes a Rolex expensive at list price?
A Rolex list price pays for what Rolex makes and tests itself, plus the name on the dial. Rolex says it designs, develops and makes the majority of its watch components in-house. That work costs real money, and the list price has to cover it.
Steel is one example. Rolex calls its steel Oystersteel. It is grade 904L steel. Rolex says it has had this steel made for it since 1985. The alloy has a lot of chromium and molybdenum. Rolex says it inspects the metal's structure on a microscopic scale before machining.
Gold follows the same pattern. Rolex says it makes its 18 kt yellow gold at its own foundry on its Plan-les-Ouates site in Geneva. The black Cerachrom bezel on a Submariner is ceramic that Rolex says it manufactures itself.
Do those materials explain the whole price? No. A steel Submariner and a steel Daytona use the same Oystersteel. Yet the Daytona asks far more over list. The table below shows the gap.
List price also depends on the model. A steel Oyster Perpetual 36 lists in the mid to high four figures. A yellow gold Day-Date 40 lists in the mid five figures. Gold costs more than steel, and the list price shows it.
What is a Superlative Chronometer?
A Superlative Chronometer is a Rolex that passed Rolex's own final tests, on top of the official chronometer test. Rolex runs its tests in its own laboratories, to its own criteria. The official COSC test covers the movement.
Rolex gives one number for the result: minus two to plus two seconds a day. It measures that with the movement already in the case. The standard chronometer limit is wider, at minus four to plus six seconds a day. Omega lists that figure on its site. Rolex pairs its five-year guarantee with a green seal that marks the status.
Who owns Rolex, and why does that matter?
The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation owns Rolex. It is a private Swiss foundation. Wikipedia reports that founder Hans Wilsdorf set it up in 1945. He left it his Rolex shares in his will.
That matters for price. Rolex has no outside shareholders. It does not answer to a stock market when it picks how many watches to make or what to charge. Rolex calls itself an integrated and independent Swiss manufacture. Our guide to who owns Rolex tells the full story.
How many Rolex watches are made each year?
Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimate about 1.15 million Rolex watches in 2025, down 2%, Revolution reports. That is an estimate, not a Rolex figure.
Monochrome quotes the report on two more points. Rolex volumes fell for a second year in a row. To the report's knowledge, that is the first time in over 20 years. The report also says Rolex was managing scarcity on purpose to protect the brand's appeal.
Rolex gives its own reason. Its FAQ says Rolex assembles each watch by hand and that high standards limit output. At times, it adds, demand outpaces that capacity, so some models may be hard to find. Official Rolex jewelers manage the allocation of new watches themselves, Rolex says.
Why does the market price run above list?
The market price runs above list because buyers want some models more than Rolex supplies. Rolex posts a suggested retail price, the list price, on its site. It sells new watches only through its official jewelers. If a jeweler cannot give you the model, you usually pay a dealer or private seller more. That price is the market price.
The gap is not the same for every watch. The table compares four references. List bands use Rolex's US prices on November 2, 2026. Market bands and gaps come from the first 60 Chrono24 listings for each reference that day. The gap shows where most of those asking prices sat. Asking prices are what sellers want, not what buyers paid.
| Reference | Metal | List price band (Rolex US) | Market price band (Chrono24 asking prices) | Typical gap over list |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Datejust 41, 126334 | Oystersteel and white gold | Low five figures | Low five figures | About 5% to 55% above |
| Submariner Date, 126610LN | Oystersteel | Low five figures | Low five figures | About 20% to 45% above |
| Cosmograph Daytona, 126500LN | Oystersteel | Low five figures | Low to mid five figures | About 85% to 135% above |
| Day-Date 40, 228238 | 18 kt yellow gold | Mid five figures | Mid five figures | From 10% below to 35% above |
The Daytona asks about twice its list price. The Submariner and the Datejust 41 ask about a third more in the middle of the range. The gold Day-Date sits closest to list, and some ask below it. Monochrome reports that US list prices rose about 9% on steel to 15% on gold in the year to January 2026, mostly because of tariffs. So list moves too.
How much does a Rolex service cost?
Rolex's US price list shows a complete service for a modern watch at 660 to 940 dollars. Modern means a six-digit reference. A Datejust or Day-Date sits at the low end. A Submariner or GMT-Master II costs more, and a Daytona costs the most. Estimates are free. Polishing, case and bracelet repairs, and parts outside Rolex's list cost extra.
Rolex suggests a service about every 10 years, so the base cost works out to under 100 dollars a year. A full overhaul takes at least four to six weeks. Service is a small running cost next to the purchase price. Our Rolex service cost guide lists older watches too.
Are Rolex worth the money?
A Rolex is worth the money at list price. At double list, it is hard to justify. At list you get a Rolex-made movement and final tests in Rolex's own labs. You also get a five-year guarantee and a service price under four figures. Rolex gives that guarantee on new watches bought from its official jewelers.
Most Chrono24 listings for these four references ask more than list today. That is a snapshot, not a promise, and premiums can fall. If you pay one, pay it for a model you will wear and keep. See the Rolex Submariner and Rolex Daytona ranges.
When the Rolex you want sits far above list, a Tudor or an Omega is the smarter buy. Tudor's steel Black Bay 58 lists in the mid four figures, about half the Submariner's list price. Tudor's own page shows a Manufacture Caliber MT5400-U with COSC and METAS certification and a five-year guarantee. See the Tudor Black Bay range. Omega's steel Seamaster Diver 300M lists in the mid to high four figures. Omega's own page shows Master Chronometer certification from METAS and a five-year warranty. See the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M range.
Buy a Rolex if you can get the model near list or want it enough to pay the gap. Buy a Tudor if you want a steel sport watch with a certified Tudor movement at about half the Submariner's list price. Buy an Omega if you want a Master Chronometer diver for well under the Submariner's list price. Our Tudor vs Rolex and Rolex vs Omega guides compare them in detail.

Quick answers
Why are Rolex so expensive?
A Rolex has a list price and a market price. The list price covers in-house making, materials, testing and the brand. The market price adds a premium when demand beats supply.
Why do Rolex watches sell above list price?
Rolex says demand at times outpaces its capacity, so some models may be hard to get. Buyers who cannot get a model at list often pay extra to a dealer or seller.
Are Rolex worth the money?
At list price, yes. At about double list, as with steel Daytona asking prices on Chrono24, a Tudor or Omega is often the smarter buy.
How much does it cost to service a Rolex?
Rolex's US price list puts a complete service on a modern watch at 660 to 940 dollars. Rolex suggests a service about every 10 years.
How many Rolex watches are made each year?
Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimate about 1.15 million watches in 2025. That is an estimate, not a Rolex figure.
