Where are Rolex watches made? The main Swiss sites and what each one does

Rolex makes its watches in Switzerland, at three sites around Geneva and one in Bienne. The Geneva sites are Acacias, Plan-les-Ouates and Chêne-Bourg. There is no single Rolex factory, and each site does a different job. Rolex says a fifth site, in Bulle, will partly open in 2029. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorized Rolex dealer: every watch here is found to order, not held in stock.

Where are Rolex watches made?

Rolex watches are made in Switzerland. Rolex lists four working sites. Three are in the Geneva area. The fourth is in Bienne, in the canton of Berne. Rolex says it is an independent Swiss maker with its head office in Geneva. It also says it makes most of its watch parts itself. The table follows Rolex's own pages.

Site City or area What happens there
Acacias Geneva World headquarters, design and research, final assembly and testing
Plan-les-Ouates Canton of Geneva Cases and bracelets, plus the gold foundry
Chêne-Bourg Near Geneva Dials, gem-setting and Cerachrom ceramic bezels
Bienne Canton of Berne Movements, assembled by hand
Bulle Canton of Fribourg New site under construction, partial opening planned for 2029

Where is the Rolex factory?

There is no single Rolex factory. Rolex lists four working sites, and each does a different job. Here is what Rolex says about each one.

Acacias is the head office, in Geneva. Design and research work happen there. Two production units handle final assembly of parts made at the other sites. Finished watches are also tested there. Rolex's Superlative Chronometer standard allows a rate of 2 seconds a day, fast or slow, after casing.

Plan-les-Ouates opened in 2005. It makes cases and bracelets, from casting gold alloys to hand finishing.

Chêne-Bourg makes dials. One dial takes some 60 operations. The site also does gem-setting. It makes the Cerachrom ceramic bezels too, like the black one on the Cosmograph Daytona 126500LN.

Bienne is entirely dedicated to movements. A movement has from 200 parts to nearly 400 in the most complex calibers. Staff assemble the parts by hand and check them. A new extension opened there in 2022.

One detail differs by source. Hodinkee's June 2024 report puts dials and ceramic bezels at Plan-les-Ouates. Rolex's own pages put them at Chêne-Bourg. This guide follows Rolex.

Are Rolex watches made in Switzerland?

Yes. Every production site Rolex lists is in Switzerland. Rolex keeps its headquarters in Geneva, and it says it assembles all its watches by hand. For the owner and the story behind the brand, read who owns Rolex.

What does Swiss Made mean?

Swiss Made is a legal label with strict rules. Swiss law sets them in an ordinance on the use of the word Swiss for watches. A watch must meet five tests to use it. Its technical development must take place in Switzerland. Its movement must be Swiss. The movement must be put into its case in Switzerland. The maker must do the final inspection in Switzerland. And at least 60 percent of the manufacturing costs must be Swiss.

The movement has its own tests. It must be developed, assembled and inspected in Switzerland. At least 60 percent of its costs must be Swiss. At least half the value of its parts must be Swiss made. So a Swiss Made watch can still hold some foreign parts. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry says the stricter ordinance took effect on January 1, 2017. The technical development test began on January 1, 2019.

Does Rolex make its own parts?

Rolex says it makes most of its watch parts itself. That includes its own gold alloys. The Plan-les-Ouates site has a foundry where Rolex creates the 18 kt gold alloys it uses. These include yellow gold, white gold, Everose and Jubilee Gold. Rolex says it developed the last two and no one else uses them. So the gold in a yellow gold Day-Date 40 228238 is an alloy Rolex made itself.

Steel and titanium are part of the story too. Rolex says it was the first watch maker to use 904L steel for cases, in 1985. It calls its version Oystersteel and built special tools to work it. The Submariner Date 126610LN is Oystersteel, with a black ceramic bezel insert. Rolex also runs a unit for its RLX titanium, which it uses for middle cases and bracelets.

How many watches does Rolex make?

Outside analysts estimate that Rolex made about 1.15 million watches in 2025. Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult made the estimate, and Revolution reported it in February 2026. Monochrome rounds the same figure to 1.1 million. They say Rolex volume fell about 2 percent from the year before. Monochrome notes that the numbers are estimates and the brands did not provide them. Treat the figure as an estimate, not a Rolex number.

Rolex says its high standards limit how many watches it can build. It also says demand at times outpaces that limit.

What is the new Rolex site in Bulle?

Bulle is a new Rolex production site in the canton of Fribourg. Rolex says it is under construction and set to partly open in 2029. It will cover 288,000 square meters of floor space and hold more than 2,000 staff. Rolex says the project aims to strengthen production.

Rolex says the site will bring production, research, a training center and a service hub in one place. The hub is for Rolex World Service, which handles after-sales work. Hodinkee says news of the plan came out in 2022 and Rolex shared official renderings in June 2024. It also reported three temporary factories in Romont and Villaz-Saint-Pierre, with staff due to move to Bulle. Rolex's site pages do not list them. Bulle is not open yet, so no Rolex on sale today was made there.

What if a seller says a Rolex was made somewhere else?

Treat it as a warning sign. Rolex lists only Swiss production sites. A claim that a modern Rolex came from another country does not fit that. A fake can come with any story on the listing. Our guide on how to spot a fake Rolex shows what to check. To find a watch's age, start with the Rolex serial number guide.

The verdict: where a Rolex was made matters less than whether it is real. Rolex lists only Swiss sites today, so a different origin story on a modern Rolex is a reason to walk away. Pay for proof, such as the serial number, the papers and a seller you trust. Not sure which model to ask about? Start with the best first Rolex, then look at the Submariner, Datejust or Daytona pages.
