Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Openworked

An AP skeleton watch is what Audemars Piguet calls an openworked watch: the dial and movement are cut away so you see the mechanism, and the best-known are Royal Oaks, from the Double Balance Wheel Openworked to openworked tourbillons. Our live listings start at $83,699 for an earlier 39 mm openworked Royal Oak and $150,659 for a Double Balance Wheel Openworked, each sourced to order and reserved with a $200 deposit credited to the price.

How the openworked Royal Oaks differ

  • Double Balance Wheel Openworked: Audemars Piguet fixes a second balance wheel and balance spring on the same axis, a patented layout meant to improve precision and stability. The selfwinding Calibre 3132 beats at 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations an hour) and shows hours, minutes and seconds with 45 hours of power reserve, in 41 mm (steel 15407ST is 9.9 mm thick; black ceramic 15416CE is 9.7 mm) or 37 mm (15466 to 15469, 10 mm thick).
  • "Jumbo" Extra-Thin Openworked 16204: a dedicated selfwinding Calibre 7124 beating at 4 Hz, with hours and minutes only, 52 hours of power reserve and an 8.1 mm case, with the "50-years" gold oscillating weight visible through the caseback.
  • Openworked tourbillons: the hand-wound Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked 26518 (Calibre 2924, 69 hours), which Audemars Piguet describes as a limited edition, and the Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked 26735 (Calibre 2972, 65 hours), both 41 mm. The 44 mm openworked tourbillon chronographs include the Royal Oak 26347 and black ceramic 26343CE, and the Royal Oak Offshore 26407 and titanium 26348IO; Audemars Piguet's titanium 26407TI is hand-wound (Calibre 2943, 72 hours).
  • Perpetual Calendar Openworked 26585CE: black ceramic with a sapphire dial and Calibre 5135 showing day, date, week, month, leap year and astronomical moon.
  • Water resistance: most openworked Royal Oaks are rated to 50 m; the strap-fitted 15469 and the 26585CE are rated to 20 m, and the Offshore 26407TI to 100 m.

Other AP skeleton watches: Code 11.59, Royal Oak Concept and Millenary

Buying advice

  • Pick the size first. 37 mm and 39 mm suit smaller wrists; 41 mm is the size of the 15407, the ceramic 15416CE and the openworked tourbillons.
  • Steel or ceramic? On 12 October 2026 a steel 15407ST started at $155,864 and the black ceramic 15416CE at $319,300.
  • Hand-wound or selfwinding? The Double Balance Wheel, the "Jumbo" 16204, the Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon and the Perpetual Calendar Openworked wind themselves; the Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked 26518, the Offshore 26407 and the Code 11.59 Tourbillon Openworked are hand-wound, with 69 to 72 hours of power reserve.
  • Ask for close-up photos. The movement is on show from both sides, so check the dial side and caseback of the exact watch, along with its papers; we send these before you pay the balance.
  • Lower entry prices: outside the Royal Oak, the discontinued Millenary Openworked starts at $67,299 and the Code 11.59 Tourbillon Openworked at $112,784 (both in the table above); for more Royal Oak tourbillons, see our Royal Oak Tourbillon collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is an AP skeleton watch?

In Bizak's live listings on 12 October 2026, openworked Royal Oaks start at $83,699 for an earlier 39 mm 15305 and $150,659 for a Double Balance Wheel Openworked 15407, and a diamond-set 15417 in rose gold asks $1,098,268. Outside the Royal Oak, the discontinued Millenary Openworked starts at $67,299 and the Code 11.59 Tourbillon Openworked at $112,784; the Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked 26518 starts at $239,384. Each watch is sourced to order.

Is an AP skeleton watch the same as an openworked Royal Oak?

Audemars Piguet calls its skeleton watches "openworked": the dial and the movement's bridges are cut away so you can see the mechanism. Most are Royal Oaks, but the Royal Oak Concept, Code 11.59 and the discontinued Millenary have openworked models too.

What is the difference between the Double Balance Wheel Openworked and a tourbillon openworked Royal Oak?

The Double Balance Wheel Openworked fixes a second balance wheel and balance spring on the same axis, a patented Audemars Piguet design meant to improve precision and stability; it runs the selfwinding Calibre 3132 with 45 hours of power reserve. The openworked tourbillons use a rotating cage instead: the Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked is hand-wound (Calibre 2924, 69 hours) and the Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked winds itself (Calibre 2972, 65 hours), and both cost more.

Is there a black ceramic AP skeleton watch?

Yes. The Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked 15416CE has a black ceramic case and bracelet with a slate grey openworked dial (41 mm, 9.7 mm thick) and starts at $319,300 in our listings. The black ceramic Perpetual Calendar Openworked 26585CE, with a sapphire dial, starts at $412,000 and the Tourbillon Chronograph Openworked 26343CE at $342,474. In the Code 11.59 line, the Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked 26601NR pairs a black ceramic middle case with pink gold, from $249,999.

What sizes do openworked Royal Oaks come in?

37 mm (10 mm thick) for the 15466 to 15469 Double Balance Wheel models, 39 mm for the "Jumbo" Extra-Thin Openworked 16204 (8.1 mm thick), 41 mm for the 15407 (9.9 mm in steel), the ceramic 15416CE (9.7 mm) and the openworked tourbillons (9 mm for the 26518, 10.6 mm for the 26735), and 44 mm for the tourbillon chronographs.

Are AP skeleton watches automatic?

Most openworked Royal Oaks are selfwinding: Calibre 3132 in the Double Balance Wheel Openworked, 7124 in the "Jumbo" 16204, 2972 in the Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked and 5135 in the Perpetual Calendar Openworked. The Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked 26518 (Calibre 2924), the Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph 26407 (Calibre 2943) and the Code 11.59 Tourbillon Openworked (Calibre 2948) are hand-wound.
