Hermès gives every colour a code. Christie’s describes Craie, colour 10, as a soft chalk white with a touch of light grey, released for Autumn/Winter 2013, and Gold, colour 37, as a golden brown sewn with white stitching and the most versatile shade in the palette. Hermès dates the Birkin to 1984, when Jane Birkin, seated next to its Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight from Paris to London, said she could not find a bag suited to her needs as a young mother; he sketched a supple, spacious holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching. According to Christie’s, the first Birkins were 35 and 40 cm, and the 25 followed in 2004, among the new sizes introduced when Jean Paul Gaultier became the house’s creative director; it is often called the “Baby Birkin”. Hermès still shows the Birkin 25 on its own Birkin page, beside 30, 35 and 40 cm models.
Each Birkin is made by a single artisan with Hermès’s two-needle saddle stitch, which a machine cannot reproduce, and takes up to 40 hours (Christie’s); Hermès makes its bags in about 12 leather goods workshops in France. Max Brownawell, Vice President of Handbags and Accessories at Christie’s, says most buyers think of the 25 as an evening or event bag, “but there’s also plenty of people who use it as their daily driver.”
The number in a Birkin’s name is its width in centimetres. Christie’s measures Birkin 25s made from 2023 to 2026 at 25 cm wide, 19 cm high and 14 cm deep, in Retourné and Sellier construction alike, so a Birkin 25 takes a phone, keys, a card holder or slim wallet and a few small essentials. The 30 is 5 cm wider, 3 cm taller and 1 cm deeper. Christie’s calls it the “Goldilocks size” of today’s market, small enough to look ladylike yet big enough to hold anything you would want to carry; the 25 suits a lighter load. Both are 25 cm wide, but Christie’s measures a Kelly 25 at about 25 x 19 x 9 cm, 5 cm slimmer than the Birkin. The Kelly has one top handle, a swivelling touret and a detachable shoulder strap, so it can be worn on the shoulder or across the body, usually with the flap closed; the Birkin’s two handles carry it by hand or in the crook of the arm, open or closed. Togo. Introduced by Hermès in 1997, Togo has a natural pebble grain that resists scratches, and its suppleness suits the classic Retourné Birkin, which relaxes into a softer drape with use (Christie’s). Five of the six Birkin 25 colours here are Togo, from $27,499.
Epsom. A pressed calfskin with a fine cross-hatched grain embossed into it, Epsom replaced Courchevel in 2004. It is light and scratch-resistant, keeps its shape and holds colour well, which makes it a favoured leather for Sellier Kellys and Birkins (Christie’s). Hardware. Hermès hardware is brass plated with precious metal: gold hardware carries 3 µm of 23.5-carat gold, and palladium hardware, the cooler silver tone, 1 µm of silver under 2 µm of palladium (Christie’s). Five configurations here have gold hardware and the Gold Epsom has palladium; permabrass, rose gold and brushed finishes appear on limited editions and custom orders.
Most Birkins are Retourné: sewn inside out and turned, so the seams sit inside and the edges are rounded, often with piping. Hermès introduced the Sellier Birkin in 2014, first as a limited edition: its saddle stitching stays on the outside, on firm leathers such as Epsom or Box, for crisp edges and corners, mainly in 25, 30 and 35 cm. Christie’s measures both at 25 x 19 x 14 cm but says a Retourné feels slightly roomier. Our listings do not state the construction, so check it in the photos of the specific bag.

Look for a crisp, centred “Hermès Paris Made in France” stamp, usually in the hardware colour; a date stamp in the format of the bag’s era; saddle stitching that slants slightly upwards; crisp hardware engravings with no peeling; feet hammered in, not glued; a padlock number that matches the keys; and a chèvre lining in the outside colour. No. Christie’s lists Birkin sizes from 20 to 40 cm, plus the rarely seen Birkin 50. The Birkin 20 is made only in Sellier construction, often as limited editions such as the Faubourg Birkin, and the micro Birkin 15 was discontinued, so the 25 is the smallest size in the classic Retourné construction. Christie’s notes it is often called the “Baby Birkin”.
