What makes the 5711/1A-018 Tiffany distinctive

Mechanically, the 5711/1A-018 is a steel 5711: the porthole case Gerald Genta drew for the first Nautilus in 1976, the same integrated bracelet and the same calibre 26-330 S C. What changes is the dial. Patek Philippe finished the horizontal embossing in Tiffany Blue, the robin's-egg shade Tiffany & Co. has used since the nineteenth century, and printed Tiffany & Co. at 6 o'clock, opposite its own signature at 12. The pale blue sets off the luminous markers and hands, and the embossed lines shift in tone as the wrist turns.

Timing adds to it. Patek Philippe announced the end of the steel 5711 in 2021, ran it out with the olive-green 5711/1A-014, and then released the Tiffany Blue version for the anniversary. The edition is widely reported as 170 pieces, one for each year of the partnership, and one example was sold at a charity auction at Phillips in New York in December 2021. A discontinued reference, a very small edition and a dial in another house's signature colour are why the 5711/1A-018 trades in a different bracket from every other steel 5711.

• Vs the Nautilus 5711/1A-010 blue dial: the standard steel 5711, made from 2006 to 2021 with a deep blue embossed dial. Case, bracelet and, on later examples, the calibre 26-330 S C are shared; the Tiffany Blue colour, the second signature and the edition size are not.
• Vs the Nautilus 5711/1A-014 olive green: the 2021 run-out version of the steel 5711. It is the closest relative in date and specification, with an olive-green embossed dial and no Tiffany signature.
• Vs the Nautilus 5811/1G-001: the 41 mm white gold model Patek Philippe introduced in 2022 after the 5711 ended. It is the current-generation time-and-date Nautilus rather than a steel sibling.

Buying checks for a 5711/1A-018 Tiffany

• Reference on the papers: the Certificate of Origin must read 5711/1A-018. A Tiffany-stamped blue 5711/1A-010 is a different and far more common watch.
• Matching numbers: case and movement numbers on the watch must match the certificate and any service records.
• Dial: look at both signatures under a loupe. The print should be crisp and even, and the Tiffany Blue should match documented examples in daylight.
• Provenance: ask for the ownership history back to the original Tiffany & Co. client and for any Tiffany documents supplied with the watch.
• Case and bracelet: check the bezel edges and the polished bevels for signs of refinishing, and the bracelet for stretch.
• Function: confirm the watch winds, sets and changes date cleanly, and ask when it was last serviced.
