The Rolex 126622 is the Yacht-Master 40 in Rolesium: a 40 mm Oystersteel case and Oyster bracelet with a bidirectional bezel in 950 platinum, the self-winding calibre 3235 and water resistance to 100 metres. This listing is the slate-dial version, Rolex model M126622-0001, and Bizak & Co. lists it pre-owned from $15,278.

What sets the 126622 apart

• Rolesium, a Yacht-Master exclusive. The case and bracelet are Oystersteel and the bezel is 950 platinum, a pairing Rolex calls Rolesium. Rolex introduced it on the Yacht-Master in 1999 and describes it as a creation specific to the model; the platinum gives the bezel what Rolex calls a silvery whiteness.
• A bezel for timing. The platinum bezel turns in both directions and is graduated over 60 minutes, with raised, polished numerals and graduations on a matt sand-blasted surface. Rolex's example of its use is measuring the sailing time between two buoys.
• Slate dial, blue accents. Rolex calls this dial slate; some dealers list it as dark rhodium. On M126622-0001 the seconds hand and the Yacht-Master name are blue, and the hands and hour markers (a triangle, circles and bars) carry Chromalight luminescent material with a long-lasting blue glow. The other 126622 dial is bright blue, M126622-0002.
• Calibre 3235. Rolex's self-winding manufacture movement has about 70 hours of power reserve, a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers, and is certified Superlative Chronometer to −2/+2 seconds a day after casing. It drives centre hours, minutes and seconds and an instantaneous date with rapid setting, read through the Cyclops lens.
• Oyster case and bracelet. The 40 mm case has a monobloc middle case, a screw-down case back and a screw-down Triplock winding crown, and is waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet). The three-piece-link Oyster bracelet closes with an Oysterlock folding safety clasp, and its Easylink link lengthens it by about 5 mm.

Checks before you pay the balance

• The dial. Slate and bright blue share everything else, so have the dial named in the quote and shown in the photos: M126622-0001 is slate, M126622-0002 bright blue.
• The platinum bezel. Ask for close photos of the raised numerals and graduations, which should be crisp against the sand-blasted surface, and a short video of the bezel turning both ways.
• Bracelet and clasp. Ask whether the Oysterlock clasp closes firmly, whether the Easylink extension works and which spare links come with the watch.
• Guarantee card and papers. Rolex's five-year international guarantee is dated by the Official Rolex Jeweler at purchase and is valid only when the card is presented with the watch, so ask for a photo of the card and have the box and papers named in the quote.
• Timekeeping and service. The calibre 3235 is certified to −2/+2 seconds a day after casing; ask for a recent timing reading and when the watch was last serviced.
