AP vs Richard Mille, or Audemars Piguet vs Richard Mille, almost always comes down to one choice: a Royal Oak or an RM. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is a hand-finished 1972 design in steel or gold on an integrated bracelet, and it is the easier of the two to wear every day and to resell. A Richard Mille is a light, skeletonised watch in a curved tonneau case of titanium, carbon composite, ceramic or gold, usually on a rubber strap, and it costs about one and a half to four times as much as a comparable Audemars Piguet, although the two ranges overlap at the top. Choose the Royal Oak, or the larger Royal Oak Offshore, for design, finishing and value; choose the RM when lightness, engineering and rarity are what you want to pay for. Bizak & Co. sources both to order; browse the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak collection and the Richard Mille collection.

Royal Oak vs Richard Mille: design and how they wear
The Royal Oak is a 1972 design by Gérald Genta. Audemars Piguet describes its signature as a hand-finished stainless steel body, an octagonal bezel with eight hexagonal screws, a guilloché "Tapisserie" dial and an integrated bracelet, and it has made more than 500 versions since. The original reference 5402ST measured 39 mm, the size today's 16202ST "Jumbo" Extra-Thin keeps. The everyday reference is the 41 mm Royal Oak 15510ST, a steel time-and-date watch with the in-house calibre 4302, about 70 hours of power reserve and 50 m of water resistance. Its appeal is proportion and finishing: brushed surfaces meet polished bevels along edges that must stay sharp to look right.
A Richard Mille starts from engineering rather than a single silhouette. The case is a curved tonneau assembled from several parts and screwed together, and the movement is skeletonised so that it becomes the dial. The RM 67-01 Automatic Winding Extra Flat, for example, uses the calibre CRMA6, 3.60 mm thick, with a baseplate and bridges in grade 5 titanium, according to Richard Mille. The house's Carbon TPT composite is built from thin layers set at a 45 degree angle, as it explains on its Gold Carbon TPT page.
On the wrist the two feel opposite. A steel Royal Oak is dense and flat, sits low under a cuff and wears its weight on the bracelet. A titanium or composite RM curves over the wrist and weighs far less than its size suggests, but the chronographs in particular are wide and tall. If you dislike rubber straps or a watch you notice all day, the Royal Oak is the safer choice; if you find steel sports watches heavy, an RM is the more comfortable one.
How much is an AP vs a Richard Mille? Prices in October 2026
The price gap depends on which watches you pair. These are like-for-like pairings from Bizak's sourced catalogue on 5 October 2026, all sourced to order.
| Pairing | Audemars Piguet | Richard Mille | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday automatic | Royal Oak 15510ST, 41 mm steel, black dial: US$47,524 | RM 016, titanium: US$88,349 | About 1.9 times |
| Sports chronograph | Royal Oak Offshore 26420SO, 43 mm steel: US$39,897 | RM 11-03, titanium, pre-owned: US$167,399 | About 4.2 times |
| Chronograph, premium material | Royal Oak Offshore 26420CE, black ceramic: US$68,906 | RM 011 Felipe Massa, rose gold: US$242,550 | About 3.5 times |
| Thin watch | Royal Oak 16202ST "Jumbo", 39 mm steel: US$92,511 | RM 67-01 Extra Flat, rose gold: US$285,824 | About 3.1 times, partly the gold |
| Where they overlap | Royal Oak 15416CE Double Balance Wheel Openworked, black ceramic: US$319,300 | RM 67-01 Extra Flat, rose gold: US$285,824 | The AP costs more |
As of October 2026, then, a Richard Mille usually asks about one and a half to two times a steel Royal Oak at the entry level and three to four times a Royal Oak Offshore among chronographs. The lowest-priced Richard Mille watches in the glance table above, an RM 016 in white gold among them, sat just below the dearest steel 15510ST, a blue-dial example that Bizak's sourced catalogue listed at US$70,555 on 5 October 2026, sourced to order. Steel 15510ST prices vary with dial, so check any Royal Oak or RM reference with our watch price checker. At the top, openworked and ceramic Royal Oaks reach Richard Mille territory; our Royal Oak 15416CE guide covers one of them. Every figure moves with year, condition and papers; our Audemars Piguet watch prices guide and Richard Mille watch prices guide give the wider ranges, and the Richard Mille price guide explains how to compare RM quotes.
Why does a Richard Mille cost more than an Audemars Piguet?
- Materials. Carbon TPT, Quartz TPT and ceramic cases are slow to machine and finish, and a scratched composite case cannot simply be polished like steel.
- Movement architecture. An RM movement is designed to be seen from both sides, with skeletonised titanium plates and bridges, so the visible finishing covers far more of the watch.
- Scale. Audemars Piguet spreads its development costs over many more watches a year; Richard Mille spreads them over far fewer pieces.
- Allocation and positioning. Richard Mille sets its prices above the steel sports watches of established houses, and its partnerships with athletes such as Felipe Massa and Rafael Nadal present its watches as equipment built for use in sport.
- Exclusivity. Fewer RMs reach the market, so a specific reference can take longer to find than a steel Royal Oak.
What the lower Audemars Piguet price still buys is real: a manufacture that marked 150 years in 2025, in-house calibres, the Tapisserie dial and hand finishing on the case and bracelet that you can see at arm's length. Paying more for an RM buys a different kind of watch, not a better-made version of the same one.
Royal Oak Offshore vs Richard Mille: the closest match
If the attraction of an RM is size, sport and colour, compare it with the Royal Oak Offshore rather than the Royal Oak. Audemars Piguet launched the first Offshore, model 25721, at the Basel Fair in April 1993. Designed by Emmanuel Gueit and inspired by powerboat racing, its oversized case and large rubber gasket earned it the nickname "The Beast", as the Royal Oak Offshore collection page recounts. Today's 43 mm Offshore chronograph, the 26420, uses the in-house integrated flyback chronograph calibre 4401 and comes in steel, titanium, ceramic and gold, usually on a strap rather than a bracelet.
The Richard Mille counterpart is the RM 011 and RM 11 series: automatic flyback chronographs in a tonneau case, long associated with Felipe Massa and motorsport. Audemars Piguet has its own motorsport Offshores, and Bizak's catalogue includes Juan Pablo Montoya and Jarno Trulli editions. The difference is price and construction: in the price table above, the titanium RM 11-03 asks about four times as much as the steel Offshore 26420SO. The RM 72-01 titanium chronograph, a more recent Richard Mille design, was listed at US$237,149 in Bizak's sourced catalogue on 5 October 2026, also sourced to order. For many buyers a steel, titanium or ceramic Offshore delivers much of the look for well under half the money; the RM delivers the lighter case, the skeletonised movement and the rarity.
Is Audemars Piguet connected to Richard Mille?
Yes, more closely than most buyers expect, though neither controls the other. Audemars Piguet is widely reported to hold a minority stake in Richard Mille, and Audemars Piguet's complications workshop in Le Locle, which began as the independent Renaud & Papi, has developed movements for some Richard Mille models. Richard Mille designs and assembles its watches at its own manufacture in Les Breuleux and has developed its own CRMA automatic calibres, such as the CRMA6 in the RM 67-01. In the market the two behave as competitors: they sell through separate boutiques, set their own prices and serve their own watches.
For a buyer the connection changes little. It explains why the two names come up together and often share a shortlist, but it does not make one a cheaper version of the other.
Audemars Piguet vs Richard Mille: which holds value better?
A steel Royal Oak is the more liquid watch. Many dealers price the 15510ST and 16202ST every day, so a correct, full-set example sells quickly and close to the market. Gold, ceramic and complicated Royal Oaks, and most Royal Oak Offshores, trade in narrower markets; some older pre-owned Offshore models in Bizak's sourced catalogue were listed below US$20,000 on 5 October 2026, sourced to order.
Richard Mille resale is more model-specific. Sport references in titanium or Carbon TPT and sought-after editions find buyers; older gold models and less popular references can take time. Because the buyer pool is smaller, paperwork matters more: an RM without its warranty card and service record is harder to sell. Secondary prices for both houses rose sharply into 2022 and have since come down from that peak, so neither should be bought as a guaranteed investment. If resale matters, ask for a written cash-buy assessment before you commit.
Servicing and running costs: AP vs RM
- Audemars Piguet. The international sales warranty covers two years and can be extended to five years for watches bought within the last two years through the authorised network, according to Audemars Piguet's Hi-Care page. Service runs through Audemars Piguet's global network of watchmakers, which covers check-ups, maintenance and a restoration workshop for older watches.
- Richard Mille. Richard Mille advises a service every three years and a yearly water-resistance check if the watch is regularly immersed; its servicing page says the cost depends on the complexity of the watch. Any intervention outside its network voids the warranty.
- Modified watches. Richard Mille warns that aftermarket gem-setting or replacement sapphire cases void the warranty and reduce value. Avoid modified examples of either brand.
Over ten years of ownership an RM will normally cost more to keep than a Royal Oak, given the three-year interval Richard Mille advises and pricing that rises with complexity, so running costs belong in the comparison alongside the purchase price.
AP or Richard Mille: which should you buy?
- Choose a Royal Oak 15510ST or 16202ST if you want one watch on a bracelet for every day, a highly finished steel sports watch and the easier resale.
- Choose a Royal Oak Offshore if you like the size, sport and colour of an RM but want Audemars Piguet's price and finishing.
- Choose an RM 016 or RM 033 if you want the Richard Mille look in a thinner automatic at the lowest Richard Mille prices; the RM 67-01 Extra Flat is the more recent thin automatic.
- Choose an RM 011, RM 11-03 or RM 72-01 if you want the full RM experience of a skeletonised chronograph and accept the higher running costs.
If you expect to own both, buying the Royal Oak first usually makes sense. It costs less, teaches you whether you like integrated sports watches, and is easier to trade if you decide to move to an RM later.

Buying checks for a Royal Oak or a Richard Mille
- Royal Oak case and bracelet. Brushed tops and sharp polished bevels on the bezel, case and every bracelet link; rounded or soft edges mean polishing, which costs value.
- Bezel screws and dial. The eight hexagonal screws should be crisp and undamaged, and the Tapisserie pattern even across the dial.
- Offshore wear points. Rubber straps, pushers and gaskets age; check ceramic cases and bezels for chips.
- Richard Mille warranty card. The card carries a holographic security seal and is paired with the watch's serial number; it should match the caseback.
- Service record. For an RM, ask for the Richard Mille service history; for an AP, the last service and any case refinishing.
- Originality. Walk away from aftermarket diamonds, replacement cases or non-factory straps on either brand.
- Price against the band. A full-set Royal Oak or RM offered well under the figures above is the most reliable warning sign.

Quick answers
Which is better, AP or Richard Mille?
Neither is better for everyone. A Royal Oak gives you hand finishing, a bracelet and easier resale for less money; a Richard Mille gives you lighter, more technical construction and greater rarity at roughly one and a half to four times the price of a comparable Audemars Piguet.
Is Richard Mille more expensive than Audemars Piguet?
Usually, yes. On 5 October 2026 Bizak's sourced catalogue listed a steel Royal Oak 15510ST from US$47,524 and its lowest-priced Richard Mille at US$69,749, all sourced to order. At the top end the two overlap: an openworked ceramic Royal Oak can cost as much as a gold RM.
Does Audemars Piguet own Richard Mille?
No. Richard Mille is an independent brand, but Audemars Piguet is widely reported to hold a minority stake in it, and Audemars Piguet's complications workshop in Le Locle has developed movements for some Richard Mille models.
Which holds value better, a Royal Oak or a Richard Mille?
A steel Royal Oak usually resells faster because far more buyers and dealers trade it. Richard Mille values depend heavily on the model, material and paperwork, and the pool of buyers is smaller.
What is the Audemars Piguet equivalent of a Richard Mille?
The Royal Oak Offshore, launched in 1993, is the closest: larger, sportier and often on rubber, with ceramic, titanium and forged carbon versions. For openworked, experimental construction, AP's Royal Oak Concept line goes further.
