Richard Mille does not publish a price list on its website. Retail prices are quoted by the brand's boutiques and a small number of authorised retailers, they rise with each new collection, and they start in the low six figures in US dollars for the simplest current references, the RM 67-01 extra-flat automatic and the ladies' RM 07-01, and run to several million for the RM 27 tourbillons made with Rafael Nadal and the sapphire-cased RM 56 series. A retail purchase also depends on allocation: the boutiques sell the most requested references to established clients first, so a new buyer may be offered a less popular model or a waiting time measured in years. Why are Richard Mille watches so expensive?

Four things set the price. The first is the case: every RM is machined in three parts from titanium, gold, ceramic or a layered composite such as Carbon TPT or Quartz TPT, curved to the wrist, and assembled with grade 5 titanium spline screws, and the brand has said that machining a single tonneau case takes many hours on multi-axis equipment. The second is the movement: the baseplates and bridges are titanium rather than brass, skeletonised and finished by hand, and the brand's in-house calibres, the CRMA and RMAC series, are built to survive the shocks of tennis, golf and motor racing, which is why Nadal, Watson and Massa have worn theirs in competition. The third is volume: a few thousand watches a year across every reference, with research and development spread over that small number. The fourth is demand: the brand has never discounted, has cultivated the most visible clients in sport and entertainment, and sells through its own boutiques, so the secondary market rather than the brand sets the price of the popular references.
