The Richard Mille RM 005 is the brand's first automatic watch and, more than twenty years after it appeared, the cheapest route into a Richard Mille. Introduced in 2003, two years after the RM 001 Tourbillon, it put a skeletonised self-winding calibre with a variable-geometry rotor, a date and a function selector into a compact tonneau case about 38 mm wide and 45 mm long, in grade 5 titanium, red gold or white gold, and later as a Felipe Massa edition with red accents. It was replaced by the larger RM 010 in 2006 and the RM 011 chronograph in 2007, and Richard Mille has not made a watch this small for men since. Why does the RM 005 matter?

Before the RM 005 Richard Mille made tourbillons only, at prices that limited the brand to a few hundred clients. The RM 005 was the watch that made the brand a business: an automatic with a date that carried the same tonneau case, spline screws, openworked titanium baseplate and function selector as the tourbillons, at a fraction of the price. Its calibre, developed with Vaucher Manufacture in Fleurier, introduced the variable-geometry rotor, a rotor whose two flanges can be moved by a watchmaker to change the winding rate, which has been on every Richard Mille automatic since. The Felipe Massa edition of 2004 and 2005 was the brand's first athlete watch; the Formula 1 driver wore it in the car, and the red accents that mark it became the template for every partner edition that followed. Which RM 005 editions exist?

Boutique and regional editions, some with coloured flanges, also exist in small numbers. Every version shares the case dimensions and calibre; the differences are the case metal and the accent colours, and the Felipe Massa carries a premium for its history rather than for any mechanical change.

RM 005 vs RM 010 vs RM 011: which early Richard Mille?

The RM 005 and RM 010 share a calibre and a price band; choose by wrist size, because the RM 010 wears like a modern Richard Mille and the RM 005 like a smaller, earlier one. The RM 011 is a different proposition: a chronograph with an annual calendar, bigger in every dimension and about half as much again in price. How does the RM 005 wear?

At about 38 mm wide and 45 mm long, the RM 005 is the smallest men's tonneau Richard Mille has made, and it wears smaller than a current RM 11-03 by a clear margin; the curved caseback and short case mean it suits wrists from about 15.5 cm (6.1 inches) upwards and looks in proportion on wrists that the later 50 mm references overwhelm. It is not thin, at nearly 13 mm, but the curve hides most of that. The titanium version is light enough to forget; the red gold version has the heft of a gold sports watch. The function selector takes a day to learn and then becomes the reason to prefer this generation: the crown never needs pulling, so the crown tube, which is the early references' weak point, is spared. The date at 7 o'clock is small and the openworked dial takes some getting used to in daylight, though the luminous hands read well at night.

• Retail. The RM 005 has been discontinued for well over a decade, so there is no boutique price. When new it was the least expensive Richard Mille by a wide margin, and it retains that position on the secondary market.
• Secondary market. Through 2025 and 2026, titanium RM 005 examples have generally traded below US$100,000, with the Felipe Massa edition a little above the standard model and the gold versions above that. A full set with the original box, warranty card and a Richard Mille service invoice carries a clear premium over a watch-only example; many RM 005s have lost their papers over twenty years.

Is the RM 005 a good investment?

It has been the value watch of the range for years, which is a comfortable place to be: there is little premium to lose and a steady stream of buyers who want a Richard Mille under six figures. The Felipe Massa edition and the gold versions have the better records, and unpolished titanium examples with papers have crept upwards as the brand's early history has become collectable. Against that, a discontinued calibre means servicing depends entirely on the brand, and a watch that has been opened elsewhere loses value. Buy the RM 005 to wear it; if resale matters, ask for a written cash-buy assessment before you commit.

Buying a used RM 005: what to check

• Papers and provenance. The warranty card and boutique or dealer invoice should match the caseback engraving; early Richard Milles were sold through dealers as well as boutiques, so a dealer invoice is normal for this reference.
• Crown tube and selector. Turn the crown in each selector position; grinding, slip or a selector that does not move cleanly between W, N and H is the most common fault on early references and a brand repair.
• Rotor. With the watch off the wrist the rotor should spin freely and silently; a rattle means worn bearings. Ask when the rotor flanges were last set.
• Baseplate and bridges. The titanium lattice should show even PVD and clean bevels under a loupe; scratches, bright spots or dust inside the crystal mean an amateur opening.
• Case and screws. The spline screws should be undamaged and evenly seated; the bezel and caseback edges should be sharp, and gold cases should show no deep dings.
• Strap and clasp. Original rubber straps harden with age; a Richard Mille replacement is fine, a generic one is a deduction, and the titanium folding clasp should be the correct early type.
• Service history. A Richard Mille service invoice within the last five years is worth paying for; without one, budget for a brand service on purchase.
• Price against the band. A full-set RM 005 offered well under the market is the single most reliable warning sign; the reference is copied.
