Who Is Richard Mille? The Founder, the Brand, the Watches and What They Cost

|Filip Biczak
Richard Mille RM 011 Felipe Massa flyback chronograph in rose gold with skeletonised dial, the reference that made the brand's name

Richard Mille is both a person and a brand. The person is a French watch executive, born in 1951 in Draguignan, who ran the watch divisions of the Matra group and then the jeweller Mauboussin before starting a company under his own name. The brand is the Swiss manufacture he founded with his friend Dominique Guenat in Les Breuleux in the Jura, whose first watch, the RM 001 Tourbillon, was shown in 2001 and which now makes roughly 5,000 watches a year that sell for between the high five figures and several million dollars. This guide explains who Richard Mille the man is, how the company started and who owns it, what makes a Richard Mille watch recognisable, which athletes and partners wear them, how many are made, which references matter, what they cost in 2026 and what a first-time buyer should check. Bizak & Co. sources Richard Mille watches to order; the Richard Mille collection lists the configurations we can seek.

Who is Richard Mille, the man?

Richard Mille was born in 1951 in Draguignan in the south of France and studied marketing before joining the watch company Finhor in Besançon in 1974. Finhor was bought by the Matra group, an aerospace and automotive engineering company, and Mille rose to run Matra's watch operations, which included brands such as Yema, before moving to Mauboussin, the Paris jeweller, where he headed the watch and jewellery division through the 1990s. Two things from that career shaped the brand that followed: an engineer's respect for materials and structures borrowed from aerospace and motor racing, and a marketing executive's understanding that a watch sells on the story around it. He is still the public face of the company, which is why the tagline "a racing machine on the wrist" is quoted in his voice, but he was never a watchmaker, and the brand's movements were designed and built by specialist partners from the start.

How did the Richard Mille brand start?

Year Milestone
1999 Richard Mille and Dominique Guenat, owner of Montres Valgine in Les Breuleux, agree to build a watch brand under Mille's name
2001 The RM 001 Tourbillon is shown; the movement is developed with Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi (APRP)
2002 to 2005 RM 002 and RM 003 tourbillons, then the RM 005 and RM 010 automatics that opened the range below tourbillon money
2004 Felipe Massa becomes the first athlete partner; the RM 006 and later RM 011 carry his name
2007 The RM 011 flyback chronograph launches and becomes the brand's volume model
2010 Rafael Nadal wears the RM 027 tourbillon on court; the partnership defines the brand's sports identity
2013 onwards Carbon TPT and Quartz TPT cases; the brand opens boutiques worldwide and stops most wholesale
2016 to 2021 Partnerships with McLaren, Airbus Corporate Jets and Ferrari; the RM 67-02, RM 11-03 and RM 65-01 generation

Who owns Richard Mille and where are the watches made?

The company is privately held by Richard Mille and Dominique Guenat and their families. Audemars Piguet held a minority stake for many years through the joint entity that housed movement development, which is why early calibres came from Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi, and the founders bought that stake back so that the brand is now fully independent. Cases and assembly are in Les Breuleux at the Guenat factory, ProArt, which machines the tonneau cases and the composite materials; movements come from APRP for the complicated pieces and from Vaucher Manufacture in Fleurier for most automatics, with the brand's own calibres, designated CRMA and CRMC, designed in-house and produced with those partners. The brand sells almost entirely through its own boutiques rather than through multi-brand dealers, which is one of the reasons allocation is tight and secondary prices sit above retail.

What makes a Richard Mille watch a Richard Mille?

  • The tonneau case. A curved barrel shape in three parts, bezel, caseband and caseback, held together by spline screws in grade 5 titanium that pass through the whole case. The shape has been constant since the RM 001; the RM 016 and RM 033 are the rectangular and round exceptions.
  • Skeletonised movements. Almost every model shows the movement, with baseplates and bridges in titanium, carbon or sapphire rather than brass, and the balance visible from the front.
  • Materials from racing and aerospace. Grade 5 titanium, Carbon TPT and Quartz TPT composites, cermet, sapphire and, on the Nadal pieces, cable-suspended movements borrowed from suspension bridges.
  • The function selector. A pusher at 4 o'clock that switches the crown between winding, hand setting and date setting, with an indicator on the dial; it appears on the RM 011, RM 030, RM 67-01 and most of the range.
  • Variable-geometry rotors. On the automatics, a rotor whose flanges can be repositioned by a watchmaker to suit the wearer's activity.
  • Athlete testing. The sports models are worn in competition by the partners named on them, which is the brand's argument for the price of the tourbillons.

Which athletes and partners wear Richard Mille?

Partner Discipline References
Felipe Massa Formula 1 RM 006, RM 011, RM 056
Rafael Nadal Tennis RM 027, RM 27-01 to RM 27-05, RM 035, RM 35-01 to RM 35-03
Bubba Watson Golf RM 038, RM 38-02, RM 055
Pharrell Williams Music RM 52-05
Sylvester Stallone Film RM 25-01
Wayde van Niekerk, Mutaz Essa Barshim, Alexis Pinturault, Sébastien Ogier Athletics, skiing, rally RM 67-02 editions
McLaren, Ferrari, Airbus Corporate Jets Automotive and aviation RM 11-03 McLaren, RM 50-03, RM UP-01 Ferrari, RM 50-02 ACJ, RM 62-01 ACJ

The partnerships are more than sponsorship: the athletes wear the watches in competition, and several references, the RM 027 and RM 67-02 among them, were designed around that requirement. It also means that an edition's secondary value follows the partner's profile, which our guide to the most expensive Richard Mille watches discusses.

How many watches does Richard Mille make?

Richard Mille has said publicly that it makes about 5,000 watches a year, up from a few hundred in the early 2000s, and that it has no plan to grow volume quickly. At an average price well into six figures that puts the brand's turnover above a billion Swiss francs, which places it among the largest Swiss watch companies by revenue with one of the smallest outputs. Most of the volume is the automatic sports range, the RM 011 family, the RM 030, the RM 035 and the RM 07 women's models; the tourbillons are made in runs of a few dozen. Because the brand sells through its own boutiques, it knows every first owner, and a rare piece resold outside that network is easy to trace.

How much does a Richard Mille cost?

At retail, through the boutiques, the cheapest current models sit in the low-to-mid US$100,000s and the limited tourbillons run from several hundred thousand to about US$2 million; the brand does not publish a price list, and boutique prices move with exchange rates. On the secondary market, most current references have asked more than retail through 2025 and 2026, because the boutiques allocate the new pieces to established clients. The discontinued early automatics are the exception and the entry point: an RM 005 or RM 010 in titanium has traded below US$100,000. Our Richard Mille price guide lays out the bands by family and explains how to compare a dealer ask with an auction result.

Buying a Richard Mille for the first time: what to check

  • Provenance. The brand sells through boutiques to named clients; ask for the warranty card, the original invoice and, on limited editions, the number engraved on the caseback.
  • Case screws and edges. The spline screws should be undamaged, and composite or ceramic cases should show no chips or lifted layers at the corners.
  • Function selector and crown. The selector should click cleanly between W, N and H and the crown should turn without grinding; the crown tube is a known wear point on early references.
  • Movement source. Early automatics used Vaucher-based calibres; complicated pieces used APRP; both are serviced by the brand, and a Richard Mille service invoice is the best evidence of condition.
  • Strap and clasp. Rubber straps and titanium clasps are reference-specific; a generic replacement is a deduction.
  • Price against the band. A full-set Richard Mille offered well under the market is the single most reliable warning sign; the brand is one of the most copied in the world.
