What are the Aquanaut and the Offshore?
Patek Philippe introduced the Aquanaut in 1997 as a way to sell a Patek sports watch to a younger buyer at a lower price than the Nautilus: a smaller, simpler case, a rubber strap in place of a bracelet, and a dial pattern that echoed the strap. The 5167A of 2007 fixed the modern format at 40.8 mm, and the line has since grown to include the 5164 Travel Time, the 5168 in 42.2 mm white gold, the 5968 flyback chronograph and the smaller Luce references. Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak Offshore in 1993 for the opposite reason: to make the Royal Oak bigger, louder and more masculine, with a 42 mm chronograph case that was enormous for its time. The line has run through the 26170 and 26470 generations of 42 mm chronographs, the 44 mm 26400, the 43 mm 26420 and, since 2021, the 26238 with the in-house calibre 4401 and interchangeable straps, alongside the 15720 Diver. The Aquanaut became a scarce, expensive watch as demand for steel Patek overflowed from the Nautilus; the Offshore stayed the more available of AP's sports lines and is where AP puts its most colourful limited editions.

How do they wear?
The 5167A is one of the thinnest luxury sports watches made, at about 8.1 mm, and on its composite strap it weighs little and sits close to the wrist; it passes under a cuff and reads smaller than 40.8 mm because the strap is narrow at the lugs. The 5968A chronograph is thicker and larger and reads as a sports watch. Every Offshore chronograph is a big watch: 42 mm across, 14 mm or more thick, with wide rubber-clad pushers and a heavy case, and even the 42 mm 26238 wears larger than a 41 mm Royal Oak. The 15720 Diver is slightly slimmer but still substantial. Wrists under about 17 cm suit the Aquanaut better; the Offshore was designed for larger wrists and looks best on them. Both straps are consumables and both brands charge accordingly for replacements.
Movements and water resistance
The Aquanaut 5167A uses Patek's calibre 26-330 S C, the same automatic as the Nautilus 5811, finished to the Patek Philippe Seal and visible through a sapphire caseback; the 5164A uses the 324 S C FUS with an independently adjustable local hour hand, and the 5968A uses the CH 28-520 C flyback chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. The current Offshore chronographs use AP's calibre 4401, a flyback chronograph with column wheel, vertical clutch and 70 hours of reserve, also shown through a sapphire back; the 15720 Diver uses the 4308. On paper the AP chronograph movement is the more modern, with the longer reserve; the Patek movements are the more finely decorated. On water resistance the Aquanaut's 120 m is enough for swimming, the Offshore chronographs' 100 m the same, and the 15720 Diver's 300 m is the only true diving rating in either line.

Which holds its value better?
The Aquanaut. Steel Aquanauts trade well above retail because Patek makes few and demand spills over from the Nautilus, and the 5167A has been one of the most reliable stores of value in the market since 2018, although it fell with everything else from the 2022 peak. Steel Offshore chronographs trade nearer retail, and older generations such as the 26470 trade below it, which makes the Offshore the better value purchase and the worse investment. Offshore limited editions in unusual materials can hold value well, but the market for them is narrower and the pieces harder to sell quickly.
Which should you buy?
- A slim everyday sports watch that passes as dressy. Aquanaut 5167A; nothing in the Offshore line is under 13 mm thick.
- A chronograph you will wear as a chronograph. Offshore 26238ST or 26420SO; the calibre 4401 is the more modern movement and the case is built for it. The 5968A is the finer object at twice the price.
- A watch for water. Offshore 15720ST Diver at 300 m; the Aquanaut's 120 m is a swimming rating.
- A second time zone. Aquanaut 5164A; the Offshore has no equivalent.
- The lower entry price. A pre-owned Offshore chronograph from the 26470 generation is the cheapest route into either line.
- Value retention. Aquanaut 5167A with papers, or the 5968A.
Buying an Aquanaut or Offshore: what to check
- Papers. A Patek certificate of origin should match the case and movement numbers; an AP warranty card should match the case number on the caseback.
- Strap and clasp. Both use rubber or composite straps that crack with age; a fresh strap is a plus but check that the clasp is original and the buckle not over-polished.
- Case edges. The Aquanaut's polished bezel bevel and the Offshore's screwed bezel should both be crisp; the Offshore's rubber crown and pusher covers should be undamaged.
- Dial. Aquanaut checkerboards and Offshore Méga Tapisserie should be free of dust and marks; check the date wheel alignment and, on chronographs, that the hands reset to zero.
- Pushers. On the 5968A and every Offshore chronograph, the pushers should operate cleanly and the flyback should reset while running.
- Service history. Ask for brand-only service records; both houses refuse non-original parts.
- Price against the band. A full-set 5167A offered well under the going rate is the single most reliable warning sign.
