The Rolex Datejust 36 116234 is the White Rolesor Datejust made from about 2005 to 2018: a 36 mm Oystersteel case with a fluted 18 ct white gold bezel, the calibre 3135, a date with Cyclops and a choice of Jubilee or Oyster bracelet, offered with more dial variations than almost any other Rolex of its era. It replaced the 16234 and was itself replaced by the 126234 with the calibre 3235 in 2018, which puts it in the position the 16234 held a generation earlier: the fluted-bezel Datejust 36 that costs clearly less than the current watch and looks almost the same. This guide covers the specifications, the dial and bracelet options, how the 116234 compares with the 126234, the 16234 and its yellow Rolesor and plain steel siblings, how it wears against the Datejust 41, dealer and wholesale prices in 2026 and what to check before buying. Bizak & Co. sources the 116234 to order in many dial configurations; the Datejust 36 collection lists the examples we can seek.

Which 116234 dials and bracelets exist?
The Datejust 36 was Rolex's most configurable watch, and the 116234 came from the factory in dozens of dial and bracelet combinations. The common factory dials are silver, white, black, blue and dark rhodium with applied stick or Roman markers, plus mother-of-pearl and dials with diamond-set hour markers. Bizak's catalogue codes such as SDLDFJ or WHTRFJ describe the dial colour, marker style, bezel and bracelet of a specific example; they are not Rolex references, and every one of them is a 116234. Two things matter when reading a listing. First, the bracelet: the Jubilee with its concealed Crownclasp is the dressier and more common pairing with the fluted bezel, the Oyster with its visible Oysterclasp is sportier and slightly heavier. Second, diamonds: Rolex set diamond markers at the factory on some 116234 dials, and the trade has also fitted aftermarket diamond dials to plain examples for decades. A factory diamond dial has the stones set in white gold surrounds with Rolex's dial printing intact; an aftermarket dial is worth less and should be priced as a plain dial. Ask which it is before you quote on any listing described with diamonds.
116234 vs 126234: old or new White Rolesor Datejust 36?
| 116234 | 126234 | |
|---|---|---|
| Case | 36 mm, classic Datejust lugs | 36 mm, slightly slimmer lugs and a redesigned case |
| Movement | 3135, 48 h | 3235, 70 h, Chronergy escapement |
| Bezel | Fluted white gold | Fluted white gold |
| Dial options | Wide; many discontinued colours and marker styles | Current catalogue, including palm and fluted-motif dials |
| Bracelet | Jubilee with Crownclasp or Oyster with Oysterclasp | Jubilee or Oyster, Oysterclasp with Easylink on the Oyster |
| Warranty | Expired on all but the last examples | Five years from purchase |
| Years | About 2005 to 2018 | 2018 to date |
From across a table the two are the same watch. The 126234 brings the 70-hour movement and a card; the 116234 brings a lower price and the dial options Rolex no longer makes. If you want a specific discontinued dial, the 116234 is the only way to get it; if you want the longest reserve and a warranty, buy the current watch. The 126234 guide covers the current reference.
116234 vs 16234, 116233 and 116200: which Datejust 36?
| 116234 | 16234 | 116233 | 116200 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metal and bezel | White Rolesor, fluted white gold | White Rolesor, fluted white gold | Yellow Rolesor, fluted yellow gold, gold centre links | Steel, smooth bezel |
| Movement | 3135 | 3135 | 3135 | 3135 |
| Bracelet | Solid links, solid end links | Hollow links on early examples, solid later; stretch is common | Two-tone Jubilee or Oyster | Steel Jubilee or Oyster |
| Years | About 2005 to 2018 | 1988 to about 2005 | About 2005 to 2018 | About 2005 to 2018 |
| Look | Fluted bezel without visible gold colour; reads as steel with extra sparkle | Same look, older bracelet, aged lume on tritium dials | Warm two-tone; the classic 1990s Datejust look | Plainest; the sports-casual Datejust |
The 16234 is the value route to the fluted White Rolesor look and the choice for buyers who like tritium patina, at the cost of a bracelet that is often stretched. The 116233 is for buyers who want visible gold. The 116200 is the cheapest 36 mm Datejust of the generation and the one that passes as a plain steel watch. The 116234 is the one for buyers who want the fluted bezel, a solid bracelet and no visible gold colour; it is the quiet luxury version of the Datejust. The 16233 guide covers the yellow Rolesor predecessor and the 126200 guide the current plain steel watch.
Datejust 36 or Datejust 41?
Rolex added the Datejust 41 in 2016 and the White Rolesor fluted 126334 in 2017, so a buyer wanting the fluted White Rolesor look now chooses between 36 and 41 mm. The 36 is the original Datejust size and wears as a dress watch under a cuff; the 41 is a contemporary size and wears as a casual watch. Wrists under about 17 cm (6.7 inches) generally suit the 36; larger wrists can go either way, and many collectors with large wrists still prefer the 36 for its proportions. The 116234 is the cheaper of the two by a clear margin because it is discontinued and 36 mm, while the 126334 is current and 41 mm. Our Datejust 41 126334 guide and Datejust 41 126300 guide cover the larger watch.
How does the Datejust 36 116234 wear?
At 36 mm with a lug-to-lug of about 44 mm and a thickness of about 12 mm, the 116234 sits flat and disappears under a shirt cuff. The fluted bezel catches light and makes the watch look a little larger than a smooth-bezel 116200. On the Jubilee the watch drapes around the wrist and feels lighter than its weight; on the Oyster it feels more solid. The white gold bezel is harder than yellow gold and shows fewer marks, but it still scratches more readily than steel, and the flutes are hard to polish without losing their edges. The Twinlock crown is smaller than a Submariner's and the case is not built for diving, but 100 m is enough for swimming. The Datejust 36 is the Rolex most often worn daily for decades, and a well-kept 116234 shows why: it has no bulk, no fuss and nothing that dates it.
How much is a Rolex Datejust 116234? Wholesale and dealer prices in 2026
- Retail. Rolex discontinued the 116234 in 2018 and no longer lists a price; the current 126234's list price on the Rolex Datejust page is the reference point for a new fluted White Rolesor Datejust 36.
- Wholesale market. In the second quarter of 2026, dealer-to-dealer offers logged 175 priced asks for the 116234 at a median of US$8,595, with the middle half between US$7,500 and US$9,095, according to our Q2 2026 wholesale report. Those are wholesale offers between dealers, not retail asks, and they cover all dials and conditions.
- Bizak catalogue asks. Bizak's sourced catalogue listed more than forty 116234 examples on October 4, 2026, sourced to order, at asks mostly between US$7,301 and US$14,016, with the majority between about US$8,800 and US$10,600. The spread is dial, bracelet and condition: a plain silver stick dial on a Jubilee sits at the bottom, a factory mother-of-pearl or diamond dial on a Jubilee with the full set sits at the top.
Those figures describe what we saw and will move. The wholesale median and a catalogue ask are different numbers; the gap is the dealer's margin, the set and the condition. Ask for a dated quote for the exact dial, bracelet and set; our Rolex price guide explains how to compare quotes.
Is the 116234 a good investment?
It is a watch to wear, not to trade. The Datejust 36 is the most produced Rolex and the 116234 ran for over a decade in large numbers, so supply is deep and prices move slowly. It has held its value and inched up since discontinuation rather than spiking, and the gap to the current 126234 keeps a floor under it. Within the reference, the full-set examples with original factory dials, unpolished cases and tight bracelets are the ones that hold value; aftermarket diamond dials, replaced bezels and polished cases are cheaper for a reason. Buy it because the fluted bezel and 36 mm case are what you want; if resale matters, ask for a written cash-buy assessment before you commit.
Buying a used 116234: what to check
- Reference and papers. The reference between the lugs at 12 should read 116234, not 16234, 116233, 116200 or 126234; the serial at 6 (and on the rehaut from about 2007) should match the card or paper if present. Rolex does not reissue cards.
- Dial originality. Factory dials carry Rolex's printing with the correct font and spacing and, on diamond dials, stones in white gold surrounds; a diamond dial with no Rolex surrounds or with uneven stones is aftermarket. Lume on dial and hands should match.
- Bezel. The flutes should be sharp with crisp edges; soft, rounded flutes mean heavy polishing. A replaced bezel is not a fault if priced as such.
- Case. Sharp lug chamfers and even brushing on the case sides; rounded, soft edges mean repeated polishing.
- Bracelet. Hold the watch by the clasp; a Jubilee that sags into a curve is stretched. The concealed Crownclasp should snap shut and sit flush; the Oysterclasp should hold firmly.
- Movement and service. A 3135 should run within a few seconds a day and the quickset date should click cleanly; ask for the last service receipt and pressure-test date, and budget for a service if there is no record.
- Price against the band. A full-set 116234 offered well under the wholesale band is the single most reliable warning sign.

From about 2005, when it replaced the 16234, to 2018, when the 126234 with the calibre 3235 replaced it.
What is the difference between the 116234 and 126234?
Both are 36 mm White Rolesor Datejusts with a fluted white gold bezel. The 116234 has the calibre 3135 with 48 hours of reserve and the classic case; the 126234 has the calibre 3235 with 70 hours, slightly slimmer lugs and a five-year warranty from new.
