The Rolex Datejust 16200 is the stainless steel Datejust 36 with a smooth bezel made from the late 1980s to the mid 2000s: a 36 mm Oyster case, a sapphire crystal with Cyclops, the calibre 3135 with quickset date, and an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet in steel. It belongs to the five-digit Datejust family in which the last two digits name the bezel and the metal: the 16200 is the smooth steel bezel, the 16220 the engine-turned steel bezel, the 16234 the white gold fluted bezel on steel and the 16233 the yellow Rolesor. The 16200 is the plainest of the four and, for that reason, the one that looks most like the current 126200 and the one that is easiest to wear with anything. This guide covers the specifications, how the 16200 differs from the 16220 and the 16000 before it, how it compares with the 116200 and the 126200 that followed, dealer prices in 2026 and what to check before buying a watch that is now 20 to 35 years old. Bizak & Co. sources the 16200 to order; the Datejust 36 collection lists the configurations we can seek.

How do you tell a 16200 from a 16220, 16234 or 16233?
Look at the bezel. The 16200 is smooth and domed, a plain polished ring that rises gently from the case. The 16220 has the engine-turned bezel, a steel ring with fine machined ridges and a flat top. The 16234 has a fluted bezel in white gold, which is sharper and brighter than steel and is the bezel most people associate with the Datejust. The 16233 has the same fluted bezel in yellow gold with a yellow Rolesor bracelet. The case, movement and crystal are shared, and all four were made in the same years, so a listing that calls a watch a 16200 but shows an engine-turned bezel is describing a 16220. The reference is engraved between the lugs at 12, under the bracelet end link, and should match the papers. The word "engineered" on a product description refers to the case construction and does not mean the bezel is engine-turned.
Which 16200 examples does Bizak list?
On October 4, 2026 Bizak's sourced catalogue listed two pre-owned 16200 examples, both on steel Oyster bracelets, sourced to order:
| Dial | Condition | Bizak catalogue ask, 4 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | Pre-owned | US$5,114 |
| Blue | Pre-owned | US$6,251 |
The suffixes in those listing titles are internal catalogue codes, not Rolex references; both watches are the 16200. The gap between the two asks is a matter of dial colour and the condition of the individual watch rather than any difference in the reference. Blue dials have been the more requested on the 16200 for several years, which shows in the ask.
16200 vs 16000: what changed in 1988?
The 16000 of 1977 was the first smooth-bezel steel Datejust with a quickset date, powered by the calibre 3035, and the first to carry a sapphire crystal in place of acrylic. The 16200 replaced it around 1988 with the calibre 3135, which added a full balance bridge in place of the cock, a larger balance, hacking seconds and a more robust date mechanism. The case was unchanged. In practice the 3135 is the movement to own: parts are plentiful, Rolex still services it, and the 3035 is now approaching 40 years old. A 16000 is usually a little cheaper than a 16200 of similar condition, and the difference is the movement rather than the look.

The 116200 is the one to pick if you want the 16200 look with a solid bracelet and a warranty-era serial; the 126200 adds the 70-hour reserve and the current clasps. The 16200 is the value route, usually at a fraction of the price of a new 126200, and it is the only one of the three with drilled lugs, which makes strap changes easy. Our 126200 guide covers the current watch.
How does the Datejust 16200 wear?
At 36 mm with a lug-to-lug of about 44 mm and a smooth bezel, the 16200 is the most understated Datejust and wears a touch smaller than a fluted 16234 because the bezel does not catch the light. It suits wrists from about 15 cm (5.9 inches) upward. The hollow-link Oyster and Jubilee bracelets of the period are lighter than the current solid-link bracelets, which some owners prefer and others find flimsy; a bracelet that has stretched will let the watch slide around the wrist and is the most common complaint about five-digit Datejusts. The drilled lugs make the 16200 one of the easiest Rolex models to wear on a leather or fabric strap.
How much is a Rolex Datejust 16200? Dealer prices in 2026
- Retail. The 16200 has been discontinued for about two decades, so there is no current list price. Its successors, the 126200 on the Rolex Datejust pages linked above, carry Rolex's current price for a steel smooth-bezel Datejust 36.
- Secondary market. In 2025 and 2026 honest 16200 examples with a serviced 3135 and an unstretched bracelet have generally been asked in the mid single-digit thousands of US dollars, with blue and black dials and full sets at the top and silver dials on worn bracelets at the bottom. It is one of the least expensive routes into a 36 mm Rolex with a sapphire crystal.
- Bizak catalogue asks. On October 4, 2026 our sourced catalogue listed a pre-owned silver dial at US$5,114 and a pre-owned blue dial at US$6,251, both on Oyster bracelets and sourced to order.
Those figures describe what we saw and will move. Ask for a dated quote for the exact dial, year and set; our Rolex price guide explains how to compare quotes.
Is the Datejust 16200 a good investment?
It is a watch to wear rather than to trade. Five-digit steel Datejusts have risen slowly over the past decade as the supply of clean examples shrinks, but they have never carried a premium and are unlikely to. The cost of a service on the 3135 and of a replacement bracelet can be a large share of the purchase price, so a cheap 16200 that needs both is not cheap. Buy a watch with a recent service and an original, tight bracelet, and the ownership cost will be modest for a watch with this much history.
Buying a used 16200: what to check
- Reference and serial. Remove the bracelet end links: the reference is engraved between the lugs at 12 and the serial at 6. The serial dates the watch; an engraved rehaut appeared only on later references, so a 16200 should not have one.
- Bezel. Smooth and domed. Check for flat spots and uneven polishing, which show that the bezel has been refinished.
- Dial and hands. Tritium dials read "SWISS - T < 25" at 6 and their lume should have aged evenly to cream; Luminova dials read "SWISS" or "SWISS MADE" and stay white. Mismatched colour between dial markers and hands means a replacement.
- Bracelet stretch. Hold the bracelet horizontally by the clasp; sagging links and gaps between them mean stretch. A worn bracelet is the single most expensive thing to put right.
- Case. Sharp lug edges and crisp drilled lug holes; rounded edges and oval holes mean heavy polishing.
- Movement. Ask for the service history. The quickset date should click cleanly and the seconds hand should stop when the crown is pulled out.
- Papers. Many 16200s have lost their punched paper warranty; a full set is a bonus rather than a requirement, and the price should reflect which you are getting.

Quick answers
How much is a Rolex Datejust 16200?
There is no current retail price; the 16200 was discontinued in the mid 2000s. Bizak's sourced catalogue listed a pre-owned silver dial at US$5,114 and a pre-owned blue dial at US$6,251 on October 4, 2026, sourced to order.
What is the difference between the 16200 and the 16220?
The bezel. The 16200 has a smooth domed steel bezel; the 16220 has an engine-turned steel bezel with machined ridges. Case, movement and bracelets are the same.
What movement is in the Datejust 16200?
The Rolex calibre 3135, an automatic chronometer with 48 hours of power reserve, hacking seconds and a quickset date. Rolex still services it.
Does the 16200 have a sapphire crystal?
Yes. Every 16200 has a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops over the date; the acrylic crystal belongs to the earlier 1600 series.
Is the 16200 the same watch as the 126200?
No. Both are 36 mm steel Datejusts with a smooth bezel, but the 126200 of 2018 has the calibre 3235, solid-link bracelets with the current clasps and no lug holes.
