The Rolex Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40 are the same President watch in two sizes: both are 18k gold or platinum Oyster-case watches with a day-of-the-week arc at 12 o'clock and a date window under a Cyclops lens, both run the calibre 3255, and the real choice is 36 mm versus 40 mm on your wrist, then metal and dial. The 36 (128xxx series) is the classic, compact proportion and suits small to average wrists. The 40 (228xxx series) is the bolder modern size and suits larger wrists. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorised Rolex retailer; the Rolex Day-Date 36 watches we can source and the Rolex Day-Date 40 watches show each size in its current configurations.

What is the difference between the Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40?
The difference is case size and the proportions that follow from it: 36 mm against 40 mm, with a correspondingly larger dial and a more imposing presence on the 40. The 36 was updated in 2019 as the 128xxx series, replacing the 118xxx, and the 40 arrived in 2015 as the 228xxx series. Neither is offered in steel; the Day-Date has only ever been made in gold or platinum. The table sets out the verifiable specifications side by side.

Do the Day-Date 36 and 40 use the same movement?
Yes. The current Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40 both use the self-winding calibre 3255, with the Chronergy escapement, a Parachrom hairspring and a power reserve of roughly 70 hours. Both are certified as Superlative Chronometers, which means a tighter rate tolerance than the standard chronometer test. The calibre 3255 replaced the calibre 3155 in the previous 36 mm generation (118xxx) and the calibre 3156 in the 41 mm Day-Date II (218xxx), which the Day-Date 40 replaced in 2015. When you compare a current watch with an older Day-Date, the movement is therefore a bigger difference than the size. Because the engine is shared, the 36 and 40 differ in wear and look, not in mechanical quality.
Which Day-Date suits which wrist?
As a rule of thumb, the 36 suits wrists up to about 17 cm and the 40 suits wrists from about 17 cm upward, but the lug shape and the bracelet change how it sits, so try both if you can. The 36 slides under a shirt cuff and reads as a classic gold dress watch. The 40 fills a larger wrist and shows more dial, which gives gem-set and patterned dials more room to work. Women and men with smaller wrists often choose the 36 for the same reason, and neither size is gendered by design. A watch that overhangs the wrist is the common mistake, so if you sit between sizes, the 36 usually looks more deliberate than a 40 that is slightly too large.
Which metals and dials does the Day-Date come in?
Both sizes come in 18k yellow gold, 18k white gold, 18k Everose gold and platinum. Yellow gold is the traditional President look, Everose gold is warmer and slightly more modern, white gold is the understated choice, and platinum is the top of the range, best known for its ice-blue dial; the current platinum references, 128236 (36 mm) and 228236 (40 mm), have a fluted platinum bezel, while the earlier 40 mm 228206 had a smooth, domed bezel. Bezels vary between fluted, domed and smooth depending on the metal and reference, and many dials are offered, from sunburst and lacquer colours to gem-set and patterned versions. Browse the Day-Date 40 in rose gold or the yellow gold reference 228238 and the 36 mm reference 128238 to compare the same metal in both sizes. Our platinum Day-Date guide covers the ice-blue dial in detail.
Is the bracelet different between the two sizes?
The President bracelet is the signature on both: three-piece links with a concealed Crownclasp, scaled to the case. Select configurations are offered on other bracelet styles, so name the bracelet when you request a quote. For the history of the bracelet and the model, see our President Day-Date collection and the Datejust and Day-Date dress watch guide.
Is the Day-Date 40 more expensive than the 36?
Usually somewhat, in the same metal and dial, but metal, dial and condition move the price more than size does. Platinum and gem-set versions sit well above the plain gold references in either size, and both sizes sit in precious-metal territory, so expect a purchase well into five figures at the least. Pre-owned examples are widely traded in both sizes. Check the from-prices on the linked listings, and ask for a dated quote for the exact reference, dial and condition you want.
Day-Date 36 or 40: which should you choose?
Choose the 36 if you want the classic proportion, a slimmer profile and a watch that disappears under a cuff; choose the 40 if you want presence, a larger dial and the current flagship size. If you wear a Datejust already, the Day-Date is the next step up in the same family, and our Datejust 36 vs 41 comparison works through the same size question for the steel line. Metal matters as much as size: decide the metal first, then the size, then the dial.
