The Rolex Day-Date comes only in gold or platinum and spells out the day of the week in full, while the Datejust starts in steel and shows the date alone. That one line settles most of the Day-Date vs Datejust debate. The Day-Date is the dressier, pricier flagship. The Datejust is the everyday classic with far more metal, size and price options. Both share the Oyster case, the Cyclops lens and the fluted bezel look. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorized Rolex dealer: every watch here is found to order, not held in stock.

What is the difference between the Day-Date and the Datejust?
The Day-Date adds a day window at 12 o'clock and is made only in precious metal. The Datejust keeps one window, the date at 3 o'clock, and is made in steel, steel and gold, or gold. The Datejust came first, in 1945. The Day-Date followed in 1956, in precious metal only. Here is the side-by-side view, using Rolex's current specs.

Which metals do the Day-Date and Datejust come in?
The Day-Date comes in 18 kt yellow gold, white gold, Everose gold or platinum, plus 18 kt Jubilee Gold on the 40 mm. Rolex makes no steel Day-Date and no two-tone Day-Date. The Datejust comes in Oystersteel, in Rolesor, and in solid gold on some sizes. Rolesor is Rolex's name for steel paired with gold. Rolex has used the mix since the early 1930s and trademarked the name in 1933. On a fluted steel Datejust, the bezel itself is gold. A white gold bezel is why Rolex calls the Datejust 41 ref. 126334 a white Rolesor watch. The Datejust 41 ref. 126300 is all steel with a smooth bezel. The Datejust 41 ref. 126333 pairs steel with yellow gold. On the other side, the Day-Date 40 ref. 228238 is solid yellow gold, the Day-Date 40 ref. 228235 is Everose gold, and the Day-Date 40 in platinum sits at the top of the line.
What sizes do they come in?
The Day-Date comes in 36 mm and 40 mm. The Datejust comes in 31 mm, 36 mm and 41 mm, and the Lady-Datejust is 28 mm. The 40 mm Day-Date arrived in 2015 and replaced the 41 mm Day-Date II. The Datejust 41 arrived in 2016 in Rolesor, and the steel versions followed in 2017. A 36 mm Day-Date and a 36 mm Datejust look alike on the wrist. The gold or platinum case is much heavier, though, and you feel that all day. For more on each size, read our Day-Date 36 vs 40 and Datejust 36 vs 41 guides.
Which movements do they use?
Both current Day-Dates use caliber 3255. It sets the day and the date with quick-set and holds about 70 hours of power. The Datejust 36 and 41 use caliber 3235, also about 70 hours. The Datejust 31 and the Lady-Datejust 28 use the smaller caliber 2236, with a silicon Syloxi hairspring and about 55 hours. Each one is a Superlative Chronometer, rated to -2/+2 seconds a day after casing. Caliber 3255 debuted in the Day-Date 40 in 2015, and the Day-Date 36 now runs it too. All of these watches are waterproof to 100 metres with a screw-down Twinlock crown. So the movement is not a reason to pick one over the other. The calendar is. The Day-Date shows the day in full, and Rolex has offered that disc in 26 languages since 1973.
President, Jubilee or Oyster: which bracelet do you get?
Rolex pairs the Day-Date with the President bracelet. It has three-piece links with rounded tops and a hidden Crownclasp. Rolex created it in 1956 for the Day-Date launch, and it is only made in precious metal. The Datejust comes on the Oyster bracelet, with flat three-piece links, or the Jubilee, with five-piece links. The Jubilee was made for the Datejust launch in 1945. On the Datejust 36 and 41 both bracelets close with an Oysterclasp and a 5 mm Easylink extension. The solid gold Datejust 31, ref. 278278, also comes on a President bracelet. Compare a Datejust 41 on an Oyster bracelet with the same reference on a Jubilee and the mood changes at once. The Oyster is sportier, and the Jubilee sits closer to the President look. More in our President bracelet guide and our Jubilee vs Oyster piece.
Why does the fluted bezel matter?
The fluted bezel is the feature that makes both watches read as Rolex from across a room. Rolex presented it on the Oyster in 1926. The grooves once had a job. They let a tool screw the bezel tight to the case to keep water out. Today the fluting is a signature, and Rolex makes it in gold or platinum. Every Day-Date without a gem-set bezel wears it, in the same metal as the case. On the Datejust it is a choice. Steel models come with a smooth or domed bezel. The fluted version adds a gold bezel and a step up in price. A Datejust 36 ref. 126200 has a domed steel bezel. A Datejust 36 ref. 126234 has the fluted white gold bezel. Rolex also offers gem-set versions of both watches.
How much do the Day-Date and Datejust cost?
At Rolex's US retail prices, a steel Datejust 36 or 41 sits in the high four figures. Most Rolesor models with a fluted bezel move into the low five figures. The solid gold Datejust 31 is mid five figures, close to a gold Day-Date 36. A Day-Date 36 or 40 in gold is mid five figures, platinum pushes into the high five figures, and gem-set versions reach the low six figures. So the cheapest new Day-Date costs more than five times the cheapest new Datejust. Pre-owned prices depend on year, dial and condition, so ask for a quote on the exact reference. Jack Nicklaus's yellow gold Day-Date ref. 1803, a gift from Rolex in 1967, sold for $1,220,000 at Phillips in New York on December 10, 2019.
Why is the Day-Date called the President?
The nickname comes from the people who wore it. Rolex created the President bracelet for the 1956 launch. Rolex ads called the watch the President's Watch, and Lyndon B. Johnson is the president most often credited with making the name stick. Strictly, President is the name of the bracelet, not the watch. The Datejust of 1945 was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch with a date that changed on its own. The Cyclops lens over the date arrived in 1953. Rolex calls the Day-Date of 1956 the first wristwatch to show the date and the day spelled out in full. Rolex names Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Martin Luther King among Datejust wearers. A Day-Date in platinum is the quiet version of that story, and we cover it in our platinum Day-Date guide.
Which references should you look at?
Start with the core models below. All are current Rolex references, with bands from Rolex's US retail list. The Day-Date 36 ref. 128238 in yellow gold with a champagne dial is the classic President. The Datejust 36 ref. 126200 in steel is the classic Datejust.
| Reference | Watch | Metal and bezel | Bracelet | New price band |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 128238 | Day-Date 36 | Yellow gold, fluted | President | Mid five figures |
| 228238 | Day-Date 40 | Yellow gold, fluted | President | Mid five figures |
| 228235 | Day-Date 40 | Everose gold, fluted | President | Mid five figures |

| 126334 | Datejust 41 | White Rolesor, fluted | Oyster or Jubilee | Low five figures |
| 126333 | Datejust 41 | Yellow Rolesor, fluted | Oyster or Jubilee | Low five figures |

Which is the better buy for you?
Buy the Day-Date if you want gold or platinum, the day spelled out, the President bracelet, and a watch that reads as the flagship. Buy the Datejust if you want steel or two-tone, a lower entry price, more sizes, and a watch you can wear anywhere without a second thought. If you are torn, a Datejust 36 on a Jubilee is the safest first Rolex. A Day-Date 36 in yellow gold is the safest classic.

Quick answers
Is the Day-Date better than the Datejust?
It is more expensive, not better. The Day-Date adds the day display and comes only in gold or platinum. The Datejust offers steel, two-tone and gold at a much lower entry price.
Is there a steel Rolex Day-Date?
Not in the catalog. Rolex offers the Day-Date only in 18 kt gold or platinum. The Datejust is the steel option, and it shares the same case style, Cyclops lens and fluted bezel look.
Does the Datejust come in solid gold?
Yes, on some sizes. Rolex makes the Datejust 31 in 18 kt yellow gold, and that model comes on a President bracelet. Most Datejusts are steel or Rolesor.
Which Rolex is the better first watch?
The Datejust. A steel Datejust 36 or 41 costs a fraction of a Day-Date and fits any dress code. Move to a Day-Date when you want gold and the day display.
