A platinum Rolex Day-Date is the President in 950 platinum, the most exclusive case metal in the Day-Date range, recognizable by its platinum President bracelet and, usually, the ice-blue dial that Rolex reserves for platinum; the bezel is fluted on the current 228236 and 128236 and smooth and domed on the earlier 228206. It comes in 40mm and 36mm sizes. Bizak & Co. is a sourcing desk, not an authorised Rolex retailer, so this guide explains the references and what to check before you ask us to find one.

What is a platinum Rolex Day-Date?
It is a Day-Date, the original President watch, cased in 950 platinum instead of yellow, white or Everose gold. The "950" means the metal is 95 percent pure platinum. Rolex pairs it with a platinum President bracelet and, since 2022, a fluted platinum bezel like the gold models (the 40mm 228236 and the 36mm 128236); the earlier 40mm 228206 has a smooth domed bezel. The signature dial is ice blue, offered in several layouts, though the 36mm 128236 also comes with a blue ombré dial.

Which references are platinum Day-Dates?
The platinum Day-Date family covers the 40mm 228206 and 228236 and the 36mm 128236, with the reference depending on dial and setting. Use the table as a map, then confirm the exact reference and dial code on the watch.

What is the ice-blue dial?
The ice-blue dial is a pale, cool blue that Rolex uses on its platinum Day-Date models and not on gold ones. It reads silvery in daylight and deepens under warm light. Layouts range from plain Roman or Arabic numerals to versions with diamond-set hour markers, including baguette-cut stones, and each layout carries its own dial code and reference suffix. Most platinum Day-Dates share the ice-blue dial, but not every one does: Rolex also makes the platinum Day-Date 36 (m128236-0020) with a blue ombré dial that darkens to black at the edge, so check the dial code as well as the numerals and stone setting when comparing listings.
How is platinum different from white gold?
Platinum is denser, naturally white and hypoallergenic, whereas white gold is an alloy of yellow gold and white metals that is normally rhodium-plated for its colour. In practice platinum feels heavier on the wrist and keeps its grey-white tone without plating, while white gold reads slightly warmer and lighter. Both can be polished. On a Day-Date the bezel will not tell you: the current platinum 228236 and 128236 have the same fluted bezel as the gold models, the earlier 228206 has a smooth domed bezel, and the 228396TBR and 128396TBR are diamond-set. The clearest visual clue is the ice-blue dial, which Rolex reserves for platinum, but platinum Day-Dates also come with other dials, so confirm the 950 platinum hallmarks and the reference on the papers, where a final digit of 6 means platinum. For the gold side, read our guide to the white gold Rolex options.
Day-Date 40 or Day-Date 36 in platinum?
Choose the 40 for a modern, larger presence and the 36 for the classic President proportion. The 40mm suits most wrists and shows the dial detail better. The 36mm sits closer to the original 1956 design, wears smaller and gets chosen by buyers who want a dressier profile. Both carry the same metal, bracelet and dial family. The wider heritage is covered in our guide to Rolex dress watches, Datejust and Day-Date.
What does a platinum Day-Date cost?
Platinum sits at the top of the Day-Date range, with pre-owned examples typically in the high five figures and climbing toward six figures for diamond-dial versions. Condition, set completeness, dial layout and whether the watch is unworn all move the figure, and market prices change, so treat any band as a guide. The from-prices on the linked listings are dated observations, not quotes.
What should you check when sourcing one?
Check five things: the reference and dial code, the 950 platinum hallmarks, bracelet condition, polish history and the full set. Platinum scratches more visibly than it dents, so heavy polishing on a smooth bezel is worth asking about. Confirm the box, papers and warranty card match the serial. Ask for clear photographs of the dial, clasp and case sides before committing. Because we source on demand, we confirm the specific watch, photographs and final price with you first.
If platinum interests you more as a sports watch, the same ice-blue idea appears on the Rolex Daytona platinum, and our platinum Daytona 126506 guide explains the reference in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Is every ice-blue Day-Date made of platinum?
Rolex uses the ice-blue dial on its platinum Day-Date models, so a genuine ice-blue Day-Date should be platinum. If the case is gold, treat the watch with caution and have it verified.
Does platinum tarnish or need rhodium plating?
No. Platinum keeps its natural white colour, so it needs no rhodium plating, though it still picks up fine surface scratches that can be polished out.
Which movement is inside the 40mm and 36mm platinum Day-Date?
Both run Rolex's automatic Calibre 3255, which drives the hours, minutes, seconds, date and day display.
Is a platinum Day-Date a good investment?
Nobody can promise appreciation. Platinum Day-Dates have held interest because the metal and dial are exclusive, but prices move with the market, so buy the watch you want to wear.
