228236, 228206 or 228396TBR?

All three platinum Day-Date 40 references have a 40 mm Oyster case and President bracelet in 950 platinum, calibre 3255 with about 70 hours of power reserve, and water resistance to 100 metres. The bezel tells them apart:

Ice-blue dial from $83,600 from $51,149 (pre-owned) from $110,345

Rolex launched the Day-Date 40 with calibre 3255 at Baselworld 2015, and the platinum version, the 228206, had a smooth bezel and an ice-blue dial. In 2022 Rolex retired the smooth platinum bezel and made its first fluted bezel in platinum, a soft, malleable metal that is hard to machine: that watch is the 228236. Since then new platinum Day-Dates have either the fluted bezel or a gem-set one, such as the 36 channel-set diamonds of the 228396TBR. On 12 October 2026 Ben Bridge, an Official Rolex Jeweler, showed the 228236 with an ice-blue dial (M228236-0018) at $68,800 US retail, against $54,200 for a white gold Day-Date 40 (M228239-0033) and $50,400 for a yellow gold one (M228238-0069).

Why platinum, and why ice blue

Rolex always uses 950 platinum, an alloy of 950 thousandths platinum that it makes in-house, for both the case and the President bracelet of a platinum Day-Date. Platinum is one of the densest metals, so the watch weighs more than the same model in 18 ct gold, and it resists corrosion exceptionally well.

The ice-blue dial is Rolex's signature for platinum. Rolex keeps the colour for its platinum watches and today uses it only on the Day-Date, the platinum Cosmograph Daytona, the Perpetual 1908 and the Land-Dweller, so an ice-blue Day-Date offered in gold deserves a hard question about its dial. Platinum Day-Dates are not only ice blue, though: the listings above include slate, black, white, olive green, blue ombré, meteorite, mother-of-pearl and diamond pavé dials.

How to choose a platinum Day-Date 40

  • Lowest price: the 228206. New ones start at $58,589 and pre-owned ones at $51,149, both below the $68,800 retail price of a new ice-blue 228236.
  • Current model and fluted bezel: the 228236 starts at $73,469 with a black dial set with baguette diamonds. Its plain ice-blue, slate, white Roman, black, olive green and blue ombré dials all asked the same $83,600 on 12 October 2026, so pick the dial you like best.
  • Diamond bezel: the 228396TBR starts at $103,974. Ice blue carries its biggest premium: $185,900 for the ice-blue Roman, index and motif dials, against $103,974 to $114,762 for most other dials.
  • Match the bezel to the reference: smooth on a 228206, fluted on a 228236, diamond-set on a 228396TBR, and the reference and dial should agree with the warranty card. We send photos of the exact watch, its bezel, dial and papers before you pay the balance.
  • Size and metal: the platinum Day-Date 36 128236 (fluted bezel, $64,100 US retail at Ben Bridge with an ice-blue dial) starts at $55,893 with us. For a lower price in 40 mm, compare the white gold and yellow gold Day-Date 40. Our Rolex Day-Date buying guide compares the references and metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a platinum Rolex Day-Date 40?

Ben Bridge, an Official Rolex Jeweler, showed a US retail price of $68,800 for the platinum 228236 with an ice-blue dial (M228236-0018) on 12 October 2026. On the secondary market our live asks that day started at $51,149 for a pre-owned 228206, $58,589 for a new 228206, $73,469 for a 228236 and $103,974 for a 228396TBR; an ice-blue 228236 asked $83,600.

What is the difference between the 228206 and the 228236?

The bezel and the years. The 228206 has a smooth platinum bezel and was made from the launch of the Day-Date 40 in 2015 until 2022, when Rolex retired the smooth platinum bezel and introduced the 228236 with the first fluted bezel made in platinum. Both have a 40 mm case and President bracelet in 950 platinum and calibre 3255 with about 70 hours of power reserve.

Why does the platinum Day-Date have an ice-blue dial?

Rolex reserves the ice-blue dial for its platinum watches and today uses it only on the Day-Date, the Cosmograph Daytona, the Perpetual 1908 and the Land-Dweller. It is not the only choice: platinum Day-Date 40s also come with slate, black, white, olive green, blue ombré, meteorite, mother-of-pearl and diamond pavé dials, all in our live listings.

How much platinum is in a Rolex Day-Date?

Rolex always uses 950 platinum, an alloy of 950 thousandths, or 95%, platinum, which it makes in-house. The case and the President bracelet of a platinum Day-Date are both made of it, and because platinum is one of the densest metals, the watch weighs more than the same model in 18 ct gold.

Is a platinum Day-Date a good investment?

Buy it to wear rather than as a guaranteed investment. On 12 October 2026 an ice-blue 228236 asked $83,600 in our live listings, $14,800 above its US retail price, while the discontinued 228206 asked less than that retail price: from $58,589 new and $51,149 pre-owned. Prices move, so we quote today's price on the specific watch before you commit.

Is there a platinum Day-Date 40 with a meteorite dial?

Yes. On 12 October 2026 our live listings included a meteorite-dial 228206 from $74,399, a 228236 from $79,049 and a diamond-bezel 228396TBR from $114,762. Each meteorite dial is cut from a slice of meteorite, so no two patterns match; our Rolex meteorite dial guide explains how, and the Day-Date 36 meteorite page covers the 36 mm size.

Is there a 36 mm platinum Day-Date?

Yes, the Day-Date 36 128236, which gained the fluted platinum bezel at the same time as the 40 mm, in 2022. Ben Bridge showed it at $64,100 US retail with an ice-blue dial on 12 October 2026, and our Day-Date 36 128236 listings start at $55,893.

How hard is it to get a platinum Day-Date?

New Rolex watches are sold only through Official Rolex Jewelers, who manage their own allocation, and Rolex notes that some models can be in limited supply. We source on the secondary market instead: reserve with a $200 deposit, credited to the price, and we locate the reference and dial you choose, then send real photos and today's price before you pay the balance.

Buy, trade or sell. We also buy platinum Day-Dates and take them in trade: ask for an offer.
