Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164A-001 Review (2026): A Dealer's Honest Take

|Bizak & Co. Editorial
Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164A-001 Travel Time in stainless steel with black embossed dial

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164A-001 is the watch we recommend most often to people who travel for a living and refuse to own more than one good watch. It takes the steel Aquanaut — arguably the most wearable thing Patek makes — and adds a Travel Time complication that is genuinely useful rather than merely impressive.

We currently list it at $96,251. Here is the honest assessment.

The short verdict

If you cross time zones more than a few times a year, this is the best Aquanaut for you and it is not close. If you do not, buy the 5167A instead, save meaningful money, and get a slightly cleaner dial.

The Travel Time system is the argument. Two recessed pushers on the left side of the case jump the local-hour hand forward or back one hour at a time, without stopping the movement or disturbing the minutes. Home time stays on a skeletonised hand underneath. Two small apertures show day/night for each. You can reset it walking off a plane, one-handed, without looking up a manual.

5164A vs 5164G: steel or white gold

The 5164G-001 is the same watch in 18k white gold with a blue dial. It costs considerably more and, to most eyes across a table, looks like the steel one — which is either the joke or the appeal depending on your temperament.

Our take: the steel 5164A is the better buy. Steel Patek sports references have the deepest, most liquid secondary market, the composite strap suits the watch's purpose, and you will wear it more freely. Buy the white gold if you specifically want the quieter flex.

Where it sits in the Aquanaut line

  • 5167A — time and date only. The purest Aquanaut and the entry point to the line.
  • 5164A — this watch. Travel Time. The traveller's Aquanaut.
  • 5968A — the flyback chronograph with the orange strap. The loudest of the three.

Is it a good buy?

Steel Patek sports watches have been among the most reliably in-demand references in the market for a decade, and the 5164A benefits from that while being less hyped than the Nautilus. It is a complicated Patek you can wear to an airport without anxiety, which is a narrower category than it sounds. The main argument against it is simply price relative to the 5167A — you are paying a real premium for the complication, so it only makes sense if you will use it.
