Patek Philippe Nautilus vs Aquanaut: Which Should You Buy? (2026)

The Nautilus and the Aquanaut are Patek Philippe's two sports watches, and most buyers who can afford one end up comparing them. The short version: the Nautilus is the 1976 Gérald Genta design with an integrated metal bracelet and a rounded octagonal bezel, and it is the more expensive and harder to obtain of the two. The Aquanaut is its 1997 descendant with a rounded square case, an embossed grid dial and a composite rubber strap, usually about a third to a half cheaper at retail. What is the difference between the Nautilus and the Aquanaut?

On the wrist the two feel different despite similar diameters. The Nautilus bracelet spreads the weight and makes the watch sit flat and low; the Aquanaut on rubber is lighter, more flexible and easier to wear in heat or water. The Aquanaut also reads as more casual because of the numerals and strap, which is why some buyers own both.

Nautilus vs Aquanaut price in 2026

At retail the Aquanaut is the cheaper family by a wide margin. The steel 5167A-001 has listed in the mid US$20,000s, while the cheapest new Nautilus, the white gold 5811/1G-001, is around US$70,000 to 75,000. There is no steel time-and-date Nautilus in production, which is the single biggest reason the two families are not directly comparable at retail.

On the secondary market the gap narrows in percentage terms but stays large in dollars. In 2025 and 2026 a clean full-set 5167A-001 has generally been asked in the US$40,000 to 60,000 range, roughly one and a half to two times retail. A discontinued steel 5711/1A-010 has been asked in the low six figures, three or more times its last retail price. The 5811 has traded above its retail price but by a smaller multiple than the 5711. Gold Aquanauts (5167R, 5168G) usually sit closer to retail than the steel.

Has Patek discontinued the Nautilus?

No. Patek discontinued one reference, the steel 5711, in 2021. The Nautilus collection continues with the 5811, 5712, 5726, 5980, 5990, 7118 and others. The Aquanaut has never had a discontinuation of the same kind, though individual references (the 5065, the first 5167 generation) have been replaced over time.

What is the hardest Patek to get?

At authorised dealers, the steel sports watches in both families: the 5711 successor 5811, the 5712, the 5726 and the Aquanaut 5167A all have waitlists measured in years and are usually allocated to clients with a purchase history. On the secondary market the hardest to find are limited editions such as the Tiffany 5711/1A-018 (170 pieces). The plain 5167A-001 is not hard to find second-hand, only at a premium.

Which Patek Philippe model is best for you?

• Choose the Nautilus if you want the original Genta design, a metal bracelet, and the reference most people recognise, and if the budget is US$70,000 or more (new 5811) or six figures (discontinued steel 5711).
• Choose the Aquanaut if you want the same case construction quality in a lighter, more casual watch, if you will wear it in heat, water or sport, or if the budget is in the US$25,000 to 60,000 range.
• Choose the Aquanaut 5168G if you want a gold Patek sports watch that is easier to obtain than any gold Nautilus and wears larger.
• Choose a complicated Nautilus (5712, 5726) if the complication matters more to you than the time-only silhouette; the Aquanaut has fewer complicated references (5164A Travel Time, 5968A chronograph, 5261R annual calendar).

Neither family should be bought as an investment. Both have historically resold well, both fell with the market in 2022 and 2023, and both carry a spread between a dealer's buying and selling price. Buy the one you will wear.

Buying either: what to check

• The full reference and dial code on the Certificate of Origin matches the watch.
• Sharp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces; rounded edges mean polishing.
• Aquanaut straps: Patek's composite strap is a service part (about CHF 210 at time of writing); a cracked or third-party strap is a cost, not a deal-breaker, but should be priced in.
• Nautilus bracelets: check for stretch, count the links, and confirm the clasp closes cleanly.
• Papers: the Certificate of Origin cannot be reissued, and an Extract from the Archives is only available for watches first sold more than ten years ago.
