Rolex Kermit vs Starbucks vs Hulk: the three green Submariners compared

|Filip Biczak
Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV in steel with a green ceramic bezel and black dial, the model collectors call the Starbucks

The Rolex Kermit, Hulk and Starbucks are three green Submariners, and the bezel, the dial and the case size set them apart. The 16610LV Kermit (2003 to 2010) has a green aluminum bezel and a black dial. The 116610LV Hulk (2010 to 2020) has a green ceramic bezel and a green dial. The 126610LV Starbucks (2020 to now) has a green ceramic bezel, a black dial and a 41 mm case. All three names are collector nicknames, not Rolex names. What is the difference between the Rolex Kermit, Hulk and Starbucks?

The bezel insert, the dial color and the case shape set the three apart. The Kermit uses a green aluminum insert. Aluminum can scratch and fade, so no two older Kermits look quite the same. The Hulk and the Starbucks use Cerachrom, the Rolex ceramic, which does not fade. The Kermit and the Starbucks have black dials. The Hulk has a green sunburst dial, the only green dial of the three.

The Kermit launched in 2003 for the 50th birthday of the Submariner. It kept the slim 40 mm case of the black-bezel Submariner 16610, but it added the Maxi dial with bigger lume plots. Rolex built it until 2010. Early examples have the "flat 4" bezel, where the 4 in the 40 marker has a flat top. Chrono24 shows higher prices for those.

The Hulk replaced it in 2010. It brought the thicker Super Case, the ceramic bezel, blue Chromalight lume and the Glidelock clasp. Rolex ended it in 2020. Read more in our 116610LV Hulk review.

The Starbucks arrived in September 2020 as part of the new 41 mm Submariner line. It went back to a black dial, slimmed the lugs and moved to a 21 mm bracelet. Inside is the newer caliber 3235 with a 70-hour power reserve. The Submariner 126610LV is still a current model. In 2023 Rolex gave it a brighter green insert, with no announcement. Collectors call the later watch the 126610LV Mk2.

Is the 126610LV a Kermit, a Starbucks or a Cermit?

Most collectors call the 126610LV the Starbucks. The name stuck fast after the 2020 launch, because the green bezel and black dial recall the logo of the coffee chain. Some call it the Cermit, short for ceramic Kermit. That name is less common. A few people, and some early press, called it the new Kermit, since it brought back the black dial and green bezel of the 2003 watch. So if a seller says "Kermit" with no reference number, ask which watch they mean. The 16610LV is the Kermit to most buyers. The 126610LV is the Starbucks.

None of these are Rolex names. Rolex does not use nicknames, and it lists the watches by reference number. The "LV" at the end stands for "lunette verte", French for green bezel.

How do the three green Submariners hold their value?

On WatchCharts, all three trade in the low five figures, and the Hulk usually costs the most. Chrono24 says its price jumped when Rolex stopped making it in 2020. It peaked in the 2022 boom and has eased since, but WatchCharts still has it well above its last retail price.

The Starbucks is the steadiest of the three on WatchCharts. Rolex still makes it, so the retail price anchors the market. A new one costs low five figures at retail, and pre-owned examples sit above that.

The Kermit trades on history, not on tech. It was the first of the line, and the Maxi dial reached the modern Submariner with it. Prices depend on condition. A clean bezel, honest lume and full papers all matter. On Chrono24, the early flat 4 bezel adds a premium. No watch is a sure gain, and Rolex prices can move down as well as up. How do the Kermit, Hulk and Starbucks wear on the wrist?

The Kermit wears the smallest and the lightest. Its 40 mm case has slim lugs and a 20 mm bracelet with solid end links. It weighs about 20 grams less than the Starbucks. The clasp is a folded steel unit with holes, so you adjust it with a tool. The bracelet rattles a little, and some owners love that.

The Hulk is also 40 mm, but it wears bigger. The Super Case has thick, wide lugs, so the watch looks heavier on the wrist. The green dial adds to that. The Glidelock clasp lets you adjust the fit by hand, which is a real gain over the Kermit on a hot day.

Rolex lists the Starbucks at 41 mm. Monochrome measured it at 40.5 mm, with 47.6 mm from lug to lug and 12 mm of thickness. Rolex shaved the inner faces of the lugs, and the 21 mm bracelet fills the gap. The result feels more balanced than the Hulk and a touch smaller, even though the case is wider. Next to the Kermit it feels bulkier, but it spreads its weight well. Monochrome found both the Kermit and the Starbucks comfortable on a 16.5 cm wrist. On a slim wrist, the Kermit is the easier pick.

Which green Submariner should you buy?

Buy the Starbucks if you want the best watch of the three for daily wear. It has the newest movement, the longest power reserve, a ceramic bezel and the Glidelock clasp. New examples bought from an official Rolex jeweler come with a five-year Rolex warranty. Pick the Mk2 if you want the brighter green, or an earlier pre-owned 126610LV for the darker original green.

Buy the Hulk if you want the green dial and the boldest look. Nothing else in the Submariner line looks like it, and Rolex no longer makes it. Accept that it costs the most of the three on WatchCharts. A 116610LV Hulk with box and papers is the one to hold out for, and a clean pre-owned 116610LV is the usual route. See more green dial watches if the dial is what draws you.

Buy the Kermit if you want the original. It is the lightest and slimmest, and the aluminum bezel ages with you. Anyone can replace an aluminum insert, so check that the insert matches the age of the watch. A flat 4 example costs more on Chrono24, and it should.

In short: for a first Rolex or a daily watch, the Starbucks. For a statement piece, the Hulk. For a collector's piece or a small wrist, the Kermit. If you like the Hulk's case but not its price, the Submariner 116610LN is the same watch with a black bezel and dial, and it costs less on WatchCharts. Quick answers

Is the Rolex Starbucks the same as the Kermit?

No. The Kermit is the 16610LV, made from 2003 to 2010 with an aluminum bezel. The Starbucks is the 126610LV, made since 2020 with a ceramic bezel and a 41 mm case. Some people call the Starbucks a Kermit or a Cermit, but to most collectors the 16610LV is the Kermit.

Why does the Rolex Hulk cost more than the Starbucks?

Rolex stopped making the Hulk in 2020, and it is the only Submariner with a green dial. Demand for a discontinued design pushed it above the current model on WatchCharts and Chrono24. The Starbucks is still in production, so its retail price keeps it closer to earth.

What is the difference between the Hulk and the Starbucks?

The Hulk has a green sunburst dial, a 40 mm Super Case, a 20 mm bracelet and caliber 3135 with about 48 hours of power reserve. The Starbucks has a black dial, a 41 mm case with slimmer lugs, a 21 mm bracelet and caliber 3235 with 70 hours.

Is the Rolex Kermit a good investment?

Going by WatchCharts and Chrono24, it has held its value well since Rolex stopped making it in 2010, and early flat 4 examples carry a premium. But no watch is a sure gain. Buy it because you want the original green Submariner, and treat any rise as a bonus.
