How to Build a Luxury Watch Collection: Rolex, AP, Patek and Richard Mille

|Filip Biczak
Rolex Submariner 126610LN in steel with black dial and ceramic bezel, a daily-wear anchor for a luxury watch collection

To build a luxury watch collection, decide what each watch is for before you decide what it costs: one durable daily watch, one dressier or thinner watch, one piece you buy for its design and one that you buy for rarity. A Rolex, an Audemars Piguet, a Patek Philippe and a Richard Mille cover those four roles well, and the order you buy them in matters more than the total you spend. This guide explains how to choose the first watch, how to add the next three, what a four-brand collection can cost on dated catalogue asks, how to keep it coherent and what documents to keep. Bizak & Co. sources every watch below to order; start from the Rolex collection if you are still choosing a first piece.

How do you build a luxury watch collection?

Start with a sentence per watch: what it is for, how often you will wear it and what would make you sell it. Collections that go wrong usually do so because three watches do the same job. A steel sports watch, a thin dress watch and a high-concept sports piece all in the same colour and size is a duplicate, not a collection. Spend the most time on the first watch because it sets the budget logic for everything after it, and keep a reserve for service and insurance, which are recurring costs rather than one-offs.

Which four watches make a balanced four-brand collection?

Role Brand and example Why it earns a place Bizak catalogue ask, 1 Oct 2026
Daily wear Rolex Submariner 126610LN Steel, 300 m water resistance, ceramic bezel, easy to service From US$15,785
Design icon Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15500ST Gerald Genta's 1972 octagonal steel sports watch, thin on the wrist From US$46,350
Dress and heirloom Patek Philippe Calatrava 5226G A plain round white gold case that suits formal wear From US$46,977
Technical statement Richard Mille RM 011 Black Night Carbon case and a skeleton dial; a modern, light, high-material watch From US$278,999

Those four listings add up to about US$388,000 at the asks we saw on that date. They are examples of each role rather than the only right answers, and a collection can stop at two or three of them.

Which watch should come first?

For most buyers it is the Rolex. A steel Submariner, GMT-Master II or Explorer is robust, readable, easy to service anywhere and the easiest to sell later, so a mistake costs little. Our Submariner 126610LN guide and best first Rolex explain how to choose between the models. Rolex's own collection pages show what is current before you look at the secondary market.

When should an Audemars Piguet join the collection?

Add the AP when you want a watch that looks different from the Rolex on the wrist. The Royal Oak has an integrated bracelet, a tapisserie dial and a thin case, and it dresses up better than most steel sports watches. It is a design purchase rather than a utility one, and prices rise steeply with complications and precious metals. The Royal Oak collection lists the configurations we can seek, and the AP collection page lists the current line.

Why does a Patek Philippe usually come third?

A Patek Philippe is the watch you wear for decades, and it rewards a buyer who already knows what they like. The Calatrava is the purist route, the Nautilus and Aquanaut are the sports route, and each has a different resale profile. Allow time: the first Nautilus or Aquanaut is a long conversation, not a transaction. Our guides to the Aquanaut 5167 and the Nautilus 5726 show the sports watches, and the Patek collection page lists the current references.

Is Richard Mille a collection anchor or a finishing piece?

A finishing piece. Richard Mille was founded in 2001 and makes tonneau-cased watches in carbon, ceramic and titanium that weigh very little and cost very much. It rewards a collector who already owns the classics and wants something with no historical precedent. Prices in our catalogue start in the mid six figures for some references and rise sharply from there, so it should be the last purchase, not the first. See our Richard Mille price guide for how to read quotes.

How much does a four-brand collection cost?

The mix above is under US$400,000 on October 1, 2026 catalogue asks, but the real number depends on which references you choose. A cheaper path pairs a Rolex and a Calatrava first and delays the others; a more expensive path swaps the Royal Oak for a Nautilus or the Calatrava for a perpetual calendar. Whatever you pick, price each watch against several dated asks, and treat the figures in this guide as snapshots rather than values.

It also helps to separate the purchase price from the cost of owning the watch. A Rolex is usually the cheapest to service and the easiest to insure; a Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet needs a service at the maker or an approved watchmaker, which takes longer and costs more; a Richard Mille needs its own service channel and careful handling. Put aside a service reserve for each watch when you set the budget, and insure the collection at replacement value rather than at what you paid. If you build in stages, buy the next watch only after the last one has been worn for a few months, because the gaps you notice by then are the real gaps.

How do you keep a collection coherent?

  • Vary the job, not just the brand. Sports, dress, travel and statement watches overlap less than four steel sports watches would.
  • Vary the size and metal. A 41 mm steel watch, a 38 or 40 mm gold watch and a lightweight composite watch wear very differently.
  • Leave one slot open. A collection with no gap is hard to keep interesting.
  • Sell to upgrade. Selling a watch you no longer wear is part of collecting; see how to sell a Rolex.

What should you check before buying each watch?

  • Reference and serial. They should match the card or certificate, and the case should match the dial.
  • Documents. Keep boxes, cards, receipts and service papers; they affect resale more than most buyers expect.
  • Service history. Ask for the last service date and the service centre; see Rolex watch care and service and the Richard Mille service page for how each house describes its own.
  • Condition. Sharp case edges and unstretched bracelets mean the watch has not been over-polished.
  • Price against the band. A watch offered well under the market is the single most reliable warning sign.

Quick answers

What is the best first watch for a luxury collection?

For most buyers, a steel Rolex sports watch such as the Submariner. It is robust, widely serviceable and the easiest to resell, so an early mistake is cheap.

How many watches should a starter collection have?

Three or four, each with a different job: daily, dress, design and one statement piece. Anything more is best added slowly.

Should I buy a Rolex or an Audemars Piguet first?

Buy the Rolex first if you want one robust everyday watch, and the Royal Oak first if design matters most to you and your budget allows. Most collectors start with the Rolex.

Is Richard Mille worth adding to a collection?

Only after the classics are in place. It is a statement purchase with high prices and little precedent, so it works as a finishing piece.

How much does a four-brand collection cost?

Bizak's sourced catalogue listed one example of each brand from US$15,785 to US$278,999 on October 1, 2026, about US$388,000 in total. Prices vary by reference and condition.
