A luxury dive watch is a watch built to the diver's brief, a rotating timing bezel, a screw-down crown, a legible luminous dial and a depth rating of 200 m or more, made by a house whose finishing and resale value put it in a different class from a tool. Three watches define the category at three price points: the Rolex Submariner 126610LN, the steel benchmark at 300 m; the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A, a 120 m sports watch that is the dressiest of the three and not a true diver; and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver 15720ST, a 300 m diver with an internal bezel and the Royal Oak's octagonal case. This guide compares them on depth, size, movement, bracelet, price and how each wears, adds the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea for buyers who want more depth, and lists what to check before buying. Bizak & Co. sources all three to order; the Submariner collection lists the Rolex configurations we can seek.

What makes a watch a dive watch?
The working definition comes from the ISO 6425 standard, which a manufacturer may test to and which a serious diver's watch is built around: water resistance to at least 100 m with a margin, a unidirectional rotating bezel marked in at least five-minute steps so that a knock can only shorten the dive, legibility in the dark at arm's length, and resistance to shock, magnetism and salt water. Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe each publish their own ratings rather than claim the standard, but the Submariner and the Offshore Diver meet every element of the brief: 300 m, a 60-minute bezel that turns one way, a screw-down crown and generous lume. The Aquanaut does not. Its 120 m rating and fixed bezel make it a sports watch for swimming, not a diver's instrument, which matters only if you intend to dive with it. The COSC chronometer certification that every Rolex carries is a separate test of timekeeping and says nothing about water.
Rolex Submariner 126610LN: the benchmark
The Submariner Date 126610LN is the current black-dial, black-bezel Submariner, introduced in September 2020 with the 41 mm case that replaced the 40 mm 116610LN. It has the calibre 3235 with 70 hours of power reserve and the Chronergy escapement, a Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert with a platinum-filled 60-minute scale, Chromalight lume, a Triplock crown and 300 m of water resistance, on an Oyster bracelet with the Glidelock clasp that extends in 2 mm steps over a wetsuit. The no-date 124060 is the same watch without the Cyclops and date. On 25 September 2026 Bizak's sourced catalogue listed the 126610LN from US$13,484 to US$15,785 brand new and the 124060 from US$10,694 to US$13,632, all sourced to order. Our 126610LN guide and 124060 guide cover each reference in depth, and the Rolex Submariner collection page lists the full range including the green-bezel 126610LV and the two-tone 126613LB.
Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A: the sports watch, not the diver
The Aquanaut arrived in 1997 as the younger sibling of the Nautilus, with a rounded octagonal case, an embossed dial and a composite rubber strap, and the 5167A of 2007 is the reference that established the modern 40.8 mm size. It runs the calibre 26-330 S C, Patek's automatic date movement since 2019, has a screw-down crown and is rated to 120 m. There is no rotating bezel and the lume is modest, so the Aquanaut is a watch to swim, sail and travel in rather than to dive with. Its case is thinner than either diver, about 8.1 mm, which is why it wears so well under a cuff. The steel 5167A is rationed at retail and trades far above list; on 25 September 2026 Bizak's sourced catalogue listed the 5167A-001 at US$77,620 and the rose gold 5167R-001 at US$121,473, sourced to order. The Patek Philippe Aquanaut collection page lists the current line, and our Aquanaut 5167 guide goes deeper.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver 15720ST: the Royal Oak that dives
Audemars Piguet's diver is the Royal Oak Offshore Diver, launched in 2010 as the 15703ST and revised as the 15710ST, then replaced in 2021 by the 15720ST. All are 42 mm, rated to 300 m, with an internal 60-minute rotating bezel operated by a second crown at 10 o'clock and a screw-down winding crown at 3. The 15720ST brought the calibre 4308, an automatic with 60 hours of power reserve visible through a sapphire caseback, a smoother case profile and AP's interchangeable strap system, with rubber straps in several colours. The dial keeps the Méga Tapisserie pattern, which is why the watch reads as a Royal Oak from across a room. On 25 September 2026 Bizak's sourced catalogue listed the 15720ST in blue at US$29,306 and in green at US$32,960, and the previous 15710ST from US$19,809 to US$41,849 depending on dial and set, all sourced to order. The Royal Oak Offshore collection page shows the current dials, and our Audemars Piguet price guide covers what the rest of the line asks.

How do the three wear on the wrist?
The Submariner is the middle of the three in every dimension: 41 mm across, about 12.5 mm thick and about 47.5 mm lug to lug, with slim lugs since 2020 that let it suit wrists from about 16 cm upward. The bracelet is the reason it is worn daily; the Glidelock clasp adjusts for a hot afternoon without tools. The Aquanaut is the smallest and by far the thinnest, and the strap is soft, so it disappears on the wrist and fits under a shirt cuff in a way neither diver does; the cost is a strap that must be replaced every few years. The Offshore Diver is the biggest and heaviest: 42 mm across, about 14 mm thick and wide at the lugs, and the octagonal bezel adds visual size. It suits wrists above about 17.5 cm and reads as a statement rather than a tool. If you are between sizes, the Submariner no-date 124060 is a touch lighter than the date version, and the Offshore Diver on a bright rubber strap wears smaller than the numbers suggest because there is no steel bracelet to add mass.
Rolex Sea-Dweller and Deepsea: when 300 m is not enough
For a buyer who wants the Rolex diver with real saturation-diving credentials, the Sea-Dweller 126600 is 43 mm, rated to 1,220 m, with a helium escape valve and the same calibre 3235 as the Submariner, and the Deepsea 136660 is 44 mm, rated to 3,900 m, with the Ringlock case system that carries a thick sapphire crystal and a titanium caseback. Both are markedly thicker and heavier than the Submariner and both are easier to obtain at retail. Neither Patek Philippe nor Audemars Piguet makes a deeper watch than the Offshore Diver; Richard Mille's RM 032 is the closest thing to a diver at that price level, a 50 mm automatic flyback chronograph rated to 300 m with a locking bezel, which is a different conversation. Our Sea-Dweller collection and Deepsea collection list the references we can seek.
Which luxury dive watch holds its value?
The steel Submariner is the most liquid watch in the world at its price. It has traded at or above Rolex's list price since the ceramic-bezel generation of 2010, and even in the softer market of 2024 and 2025 a full-set 126610LN could be sold to a dealer within days at a known band. The steel Aquanaut 5167A has traded far above its list price for years because Patek rations steel sports watches, so the risk sits in the premium rather than in the watch: a buyer paying twice retail is betting that rationing continues. The Offshore Diver is the value case. It has generally been available at or below list on the secondary market, the older 15710ST in particular, which makes it the cheapest way into a 300 m diver from one of the three houses per millimetre of finishing. The Phillips watch department archive shows how vintage Submariners have appreciated over decades; the modern references move far more slowly.
Buying a luxury dive watch: what to check
- Bezel action. A Submariner bezel should click through 120 positions in one direction only with no back-play; the Offshore Diver's internal bezel should turn smoothly from the crown at 10 and stop cleanly, and that crown should screw down fully.
- Crown and seals. Every screw-down crown should engage its threads without cross-threading and seat with a firm stop. Ask for the date of the last pressure test; a watch that has been opened without a test is not a diver until it is tested.
- Lume. Chromalight on a Rolex glows blue and should be even across dial and hands; a hand that glows a different colour has been replaced. AP and Patek lume is white or green and dimmer by design.
- Bracelet and clasp. Hold the Submariner by the clasp to check for stretch and confirm the Glidelock slides and locks. On the Aquanaut and the Offshore Diver inspect the strap for cracks at the lugs; an original AP or Patek strap adds to the price but a replacement is normal.
- Case edges. The Submariner's lug chamfers and the Royal Oak's brushed and polished bevels are the first things polishing softens; rounded edges mean metal has been removed.
- Card and papers. Rolex's warranty card and Patek's certificate of origin cannot be reissued; AP's extract of the archives can be obtained for a fee, which is why an AP without papers is discounted less than a Patek without papers.
- Price against the band. A full-set Submariner or 5167A offered well under the market is the single most reliable warning sign.

Quick answers
What is the best luxury dive watch?
The Rolex Submariner 126610LN is the benchmark: 41 mm, 300 m, calibre 3235 with 70 hours of reserve, and the most liquid watch at its price. The AP Royal Oak Offshore Diver 15720ST is the alternative at 300 m with more presence; the Patek Aquanaut is a sports watch rather than a diver.
Is the Patek Philippe Aquanaut a dive watch?
No. The Aquanaut 5167A is rated to 120 m with a fixed bezel and a screw-down crown, which suits swimming and sailing but not diving. The Submariner and Offshore Diver are rated to 300 m with rotating timing bezels.
How much is a Rolex Submariner in 2026?
Bizak's sourced catalogue listed the 126610LN from US$13,484 to US$15,785 brand new and the no-date 124060 from US$10,694 to US$13,632 on 25 September 2026, all sourced to order. Rolex's list price is on its Submariner pages.
What is the difference between the Offshore Diver 15710 and 15720?
The 15720ST of 2021 has the calibre 4308 with 60 hours of reserve, a sapphire caseback, a slimmer case profile and AP's interchangeable strap system; the 15710ST has the calibre 3120. Both are 42 mm and rated to 300 m with an internal bezel.
Which dive watch is the best investment?
The steel Submariner holds value most reliably and sells fastest. The steel Aquanaut carries a large premium over retail that could narrow. The Offshore Diver is often found at or below list, so it is the value buy rather than the appreciating one.
