The top 10 luxury watch brands in 2026, ranked by the quality of their movements, their finishing, their history and how their watches hold value, are Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, Rolex, Richard Mille, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Breguet, Cartier and Omega. Each makes something worth owning, but each has one or two references that represent the brand at its best and hold value better than the rest of its catalogue, and that is what this guide identifies: the watch to buy from each of the ten, why, and what it cost on a dated basis in 2026. It also explains how the list was chosen, which brand to buy first, which of the ten hold value and what to check before buying. Bizak & Co. sources the top brands to order; the pre-owned watches collection lists the configurations we can seek.

How were the top 10 luxury watch brands chosen?
Four criteria, weighted equally: whether the brand designs and makes its own movements; how those movements are finished, by hand or by machine; the depth of the brand's history and archive; and the resale record, meaning what a five-year-old example fetches against its retail price. Marketing spend and celebrity ambassadors are ignored. The result places the three Geneva houses and Lange at the top on finishing, Rolex fifth on the strength of its engineering and resale despite industrial finishing, Richard Mille sixth as the modern entrant, and four brands with long histories and strong watchmaking but softer resale behind them. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry at fhs.swiss publishes the export data that shows how concentrated value has become in the top few names.

Brands 1 to 3: Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin
Patek Philippe: buy the Aquanaut 5167A or the Calatrava 5196
Founded in Geneva in 1839 and family owned since 1932, Patek Philippe makes the widest range of complications in production and finishes every watch to its own seal. The Nautilus is the famous reference but the steel 5711 has been discontinued since 2021 and trades at a scarcity premium; the Aquanaut 5167A gives the same manufacture, calibre 26-330 and steel sports case at a lower ask, and the Calatrava 5196 in gold is the purest dress watch the brand makes. See the Patek Philippe collection and our Patek Philippe price guide.
Audemars Piguet: buy the Royal Oak Selfwinding 15510ST
Le Brassus, 1875, family owned. The Royal Oak of 1972 is the watch that made a steel sports watch an haute horlogerie object, and the 41 mm 15510ST with the calibre 4302 and a 70-hour reserve is the current standard-bearer. Blue, black and green dials carry different premiums; the blue is the most requested. Our Audemars Piguet price guide covers the references.
Vacheron Constantin: buy the Overseas or the Historiques 222
Geneva, 1755, the oldest continuously operating watchmaker. Finishing on a par with Patek Philippe with waiting lists that are shorter and resale that is a step lower, which makes it the value route into the top three. The Overseas is the integrated-bracelet sports watch and comes with three interchangeable straps; the Historiques 222 reissue of 2022 is the collector's pick.
Brands 4 to 6: A. Lange & Söhne, Rolex and Richard Mille
A. Lange & Söhne: buy the Lange 1
Glashütte, Germany, refounded in 1990 after reunification. German silver three-quarter plates, hand-engraved balance cocks and about 5,000 watches a year. The Lange 1, with its off-centre dial and outsize date, has been the brand's signature since 1994 and is the watch to own; the Datograph is the chronograph collectors chase. Not Swiss, and in the top four on finishing alone.
Rolex: buy the Datejust 41 or a Submariner
Geneva, 1905. About a million watches a year with in-house chronometer movements, own foundry, own steel and the best service network in the industry. Finishing is industrial, which keeps Rolex out of the top four, but no brand's watches hold value better. The Datejust 41 126334 is the first Rolex for most buyers and the Submariner is the one-watch collection; the Rolex collection lists the current references and our best first Rolex guide picks between them.
Richard Mille: buy the RM 030 or the RM 67-01
Les Breuleux, 2001. Skeletonised titanium movements in carbon and titanium cases, a few thousand pieces a year and the highest entry price of any production brand. The RM 030 with its declutchable rotor and the extra-flat RM 67-01 are the two references that give the Richard Mille experience at the bottom of the brand's range; the athlete editions cost more and are harder to find. Our Richard Mille price guide lists dated asks.
Brands 7 to 10: Jaeger-LeCoultre, Breguet, Cartier and Omega
Jaeger-LeCoultre: buy the Reverso or the Master Ultra Thin Moon
Le Sentier, 1833. The movement maker that supplied Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin for decades and still makes everything in-house. The Reverso of 1931 is the design icon; the Master Ultra Thin Moon is the best dress watch under US$15,000 from any manufacture. Resale is soft, so buy pre-owned.
Breguet: buy the Classique 5177 or the Marine
Founded in 1775 by the inventor of the tourbillon, now owned by Swatch Group. Guilloché dials, blued pomme hands and secret signatures; the Classique 5177 is the archetype and the Marine is the sports line. Watchmaking in the top tier, resale in the middle, which again favours pre-owned.
Cartier: buy the Santos or the Tank
Paris, 1847, owned by Richemont. Cartier leads on design rather than movements: the Santos of 1904 is the first purpose-built wristwatch and the Tank of 1917 is the most copied dress watch shape ever made. Modern Santos and Tank models use in-house or supplied movements depending on reference; vintage Cartier has become a serious collecting field of its own.
Omega: buy the Speedmaster Professional
Biel, 1848, owned by Swatch Group. About half a million watches a year with co-axial Master Chronometer movements certified to resist 15,000 gauss. The Speedmaster Professional is the watch that went to the Moon and is still the best mechanical chronograph under US$10,000; the Seamaster is the dive watch. Omega competes with Rolex on the wrist and loses on resale.
Which of the top 10 should you buy first?
For most buyers, Rolex: the Datejust 41 or a Submariner gives a manufacture movement, a five-year warranty, the widest service network and a resale record that limits the downside. A buyer who wants top-tier finishing at the lowest cost should buy a pre-owned Jaeger-LeCoultre or Vacheron Constantin. A buyer who wants a steel sports watch that holds its price should choose between the Submariner, the Royal Oak 15510ST and the Aquanaut 5167A, in rising order of cost and waiting time. Richard Mille and Lange are second or third watches, once the collection has a foundation.
Which of the top 10 hold their value?
Rolex professional models and steel sports watches from Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet have traded above retail for most of the past decade and stayed there through the correction from the 2022 peak. Vacheron Constantin, Lange and Richard Mille generally hold 70 to 100 percent of retail depending on reference, with Richard Mille's limited editions above that. Jaeger-LeCoultre, Breguet, Cartier and Omega usually lose a third to a half of retail on resale, which is the reason to buy them pre-owned and the reason they are still in the top 10: the watches are excellent, the discount is the market's, not the maker's.
Buying from the top 10: what to check
- Movement origin. Within Cartier, Breguet and Omega the calibre varies by reference; ask whether it is in-house before paying a manufacture price.
- Warranty and papers. A card with a matching serial and a dated invoice add real money on resale at the top six; Rolex and Patek Philippe do not reissue cards.
- Condition. An unpolished case with sharp bevels and an original dial holds value at every brand. Royal Oak and Nautilus bracelets are expensive to refinish or replace.
- Service history. Ask for the last manufacture service date; complications and vintage pieces need one every 5 to 8 years.
- Resale check. Look up what a five-year-old example of the reference sells for before you pay retail. If the answer is half, buy pre-owned.
- Price against the band. A top-10 watch offered well under the market is the single most reliable warning sign.
