Every current Datejust 31 has a 31 mm Oyster case waterproof to 100 metres, a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens over the date and the calibre 2236. The metal and bezel decide the reference. Oystersteel and Rolesor references come on an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet, solid gold ones on the President.

Rolex prices each reference on a fixed ladder. On the same bracelet, a Roman VI set with 11 diamonds adds $1,650 to the plain dial, diamond hour markers $2,100 and mother-of-pearl with diamonds $2,550. The Jubilee adds $200 on steel and White Rolesor, $650 in Everose Rolesor and $700 in yellow Rolesor.
Dealer prices do not follow that ladder. On October 19, 2026 our lowest asks were above Rolex's lowest list price for the 278240 and 278274, and below it for every diamond-bezel and solid gold reference: a yellow gold 278278 from $33,573 against Rolex's $39,400.
How to read a Datejust 31 reference
Every current reference starts with 278. The next two digits give the bezel, the last digit the metal:
- 27824x: domed bezel (278240, 278241, 278243).
- 27827x: fluted bezel (278271, 278273, 278274, 278275, 278278).
- 27828xRBR: solid gold with a 46-diamond bezel.
- 27834xRBR: Rolesor with 24 diamonds set into a domed bezel, 0.28 carat in all.
- 27838xRBR: Rolesor with a 46-diamond bezel, 1.02 carats.
- Last digit: 0 Oystersteel, 1 Everose Rolesor, 3 yellow Rolesor, 4 White Rolesor, 5 Everose gold, 8 yellow gold, 9 white gold.
RBR marks a bezel set with brilliant-cut diamonds. Letters dealers add after the reference, as in our listing 278240PSJ, describe the dial and bracelet; they are not part of Rolex's reference.
Datejust 31 dials: blue, pink, olive green and mother-of-pearl
Rolex gives each metal its own palette, so the colour you want narrows down the reference.
- Blue: bright blue with Roman numerals, only with steel or white gold (278240, 278274, 278344RBR, 278384RBR, 278289RBR); there is no blue dial with yellow or Everose gold. Rolex lists the 278240 at $7,700; we ask $11,220 for a bright blue 278240 on Jubilee.
- Pink: index markers or Roman numerals on the same references, from $7,700, and with diamonds on all but the 278240. Everose references take a rosé-colour dial instead.
- Olive green: only diamond-set and only with yellow gold (278243, 278273, 278343RBR, 278383RBR, 278278, 278288RBR), from $14,750. We ask $15,857 for a 278343RBR with an olive Roman dial; our green dial Rolex guide covers other models.
- Mother-of-pearl: white with diamonds on every reference except the 278240, from $11,900 for a 278274; black only with yellow gold. We ask $13,484 for a white mother-of-pearl 278274 on Oyster.
- Other colours: mint green and bright black come with steel and white gold, champagne with yellow gold, chocolate and slate with Everose, aubergine with Everose and white gold; white and silver run across the range. Red ombré with diamonds is reserved for the solid gold 278278, 278288RBR and 278289RBR.
- Floral motif: none in Rolex's 2026 catalogue, so azzurro blue, olive green and silver floral dials come from earlier production. We ask $12,833 for a 278274 with the azzurro blue floral dial.
Metals, bezels and bracelets
Metals. Rolex's Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family. Rolesor, a Rolex name trademarked in 1933, pairs Oystersteel with 18 kt yellow, white or Everose gold, Rolex's patented pink gold alloy cast in its own foundry. Solid gold means the yellow gold 278278 (from $39,400) or Everose 278275 (from $42,900), or with diamonds the 278288RBR, 278285RBR and white gold 278289RBR. For rose gold at a lower price, the Everose Rolesor 278241 starts at $13,550.
Bezels. The domed bezel is smooth. Rolex's fluting once served to screw the bezel onto the case for waterproofness; on the Datejust 31 it is decorative and in gold. Diamond bezels carry 24 stones on a domed bezel (27834xRBR, 0.28 carat) or 46 on a fully set bezel (27838xRBR and 27828xRBR, 1.02 carats).
Bracelets. The Oyster, with three-piece solid links, closes with a folding Oysterclasp and the Easylink extension, which lengthens it by about 5 mm. The Jubilee, with five-piece links, and the President, with semi-circular three-piece links and only on solid gold, use a concealed Crownclasp.

The Datejust 31 shares the Lady-Datejust's calibre in a case 3 mm wider. Many dealer listings, some of ours included, call it the Lady-Datejust 31; on rolex.com the Lady-Datejust is the 28 mm line. Earlier 31 mm references are no longer in the catalogue; we list a pre-owned 178240 from $7,059 and a pre-owned 68240 from $5,039.
Buying checks for a Datejust 31
- Match the bezel to the reference. A 278240 has a smooth domed bezel and a 278274 a fluted one. Factory diamond bezels have their own RBR references, so a 278274 with a diamond bezel was modified after it left Rolex.
- Match the dial to the metal. In the 2026 catalogue the 278240 has no diamond or mother-of-pearl dial, and olive green and black mother-of-pearl come only with yellow gold. If a listing pairs them otherwise, ask whether the dial is Rolex's.
- Read the card. The reference on the Rolex warranty card should match the metal and bezel of the watch.
